sounds more like her father was away on business

What the fuck?! Misfired artillery? The person who was aiming that artillery piece ought to be seriously reprimanded, and the repair cost taken out their pay. That sort of mistake is simply not acceptable.

With that said, that should be the limit of their punishment. After all, they are only human.

Why is there a firing range in New Jersey? Not only do American comics give the impression that New Jersey is a hell hole, but that state is pretty damn densely populated... Why not place the firing range some place safer. Like in, uh... Wyoming? No one lives there.

in order to put an artillery range completely out range of homes you need 2,500 square miles of land.
to be honest i don't think the military didn't know the type of artillery just the public affairs representative they sent to the press didn't expect that question.

Not the way the military generally handles accidents. You find out what went wrong, and then you take steps to make it harder for it to happen again. Punishing people for an accident only leads to cover-ups and evidence tampering.

The pine barrens in the south (and southeast) of New Jersey are sparsely populated, especially relative to the north and coastal parts of the state.
