Does your BAC lower or raise your willingness to be honest?

This could, potentially, go under that Great Alcohol Stories thread. But before I do, here is the question-

Are people more or less honest while under the influence [of alcohol]?

Do you find yourself more or less willing to tell the truth? Have you found others more prone to tell the truth or lie? I've heard "A drunk man's actions are a sober man's thoughts" for a long time. But is that true or not?

So what's your opinion?

I think that alcohol takes away any inhibitions people have so they´re more prone to tell the truth than in regular circumstances.

Definately raises people's willingness to tell the truth.

Definately raises people's willingness to tell the truth.

Only problem is, with every time I've talked to people here. They've lied out their ass to me... while drunk.

It definitely goes against all common sense, really.

As much as this sounds very "specific", it actually has happened enough for me to wonder if being drunk really makes you HONEST or makes you just very goal-centric.

Well, in my experience it makes people open up more.

Strange you had the opposite experience!

alcohol reveals the real you (hence why being drunk isn't a defense in court) if your shy deep down you will be more prone to be quite etc

so it all comes down to your inner child :)

I'm generally honest, for the most part. The biggest effects I notice is I'll hit on women far more readily than I would sober and that stupid things will come out of my mouth that I'd typically just dismiss at a thought.

In my experience, being under influence makes one less inhibited in the sense that it lets one to both tell a lie and to tell the truth more readily - if I'm hitting on some woman, I find myself much better a con-man after 5-6 shots and if I'm talking to someone I feel I wronged and need to make it right the same amount helps me to come clean.

It all depends on the scenario I guess; I'm a fairly skilled liar in any case but any shame/conscience I may have disappears and any inhibitions that I may have towards telling the truth (to keep my ego from harm maybe?) also goes poof after a few drinks.

Cheerio!

I think it certainly opens up people a lot more. I remember a few years ago when I was a bit nervous to go up and speak to women in pubs, but after a few shots of Dutch courage I was able to find confidence to do it. I have noticed similar results with other people as well.

Now back to the question at hand, a lot of people do think that being drunk means you won't lie, and I have seen a few people tell the truth when under the influence. I remember one time (back in my high school days) when in year 12 a bunch of maths tests went missing, I got the blame I don't know why maybe because I was an easy target (I didn't if that is what you are thinking), needless to say I didn't get in any trouble over it as they were unable to pin any tangible evidence on me. That Saturday night one of the girls were having her 18th, I had a few drinks and started telling a few people that I did take them (for a laugh, hey they already thought I did there was no reason to continue the denial) and that I had hid them under the box underneath the teachers desk, saying that I never lied because technically I never took them out of his office as the teacher had asked me, so you see I never did lie about them. Anyway first thing Monday morning I see this teacher and one of the students who I had told marching into his office he picked up every box under his desk but alas there was no tests, I had a good chuckle watching them do that.

So while some people may speak the truth when drunk, I have never told people things I don't want people to know while drunk, and am always aware of what I am saying and doing (except for one time, but I never said anything that I would not have said anyway).
