I hate HP
Ok, so my girlfriend's parent's bought an HP printer. Guess what, it does not work. They asked me to look at it and try to get working, after trying every that I could think of I finally I broke down and contacted HP tech support.
Now after 4 hour of online chit chat, I am now where closer, and the have to take my issue up to another support level, and they will either call me or send me an email in 2-3 days.
so Basically I wasted my entire friday night for nothing.
please share any thoughts or other horror stories you might have.

I always thought Sonic had hit rock bottom, but now I know.
Steps to fix your HP printer:
1. Unplug all cables.
2. Find a bat.
3. Beat the shit out of it.
4. Buy a different brand of printer.
Seriously, I uninstalled and reinstalled my printer/scanner/copier/fax combo after the scanner stopped working, and now it won't connect to my computer at all. I've scrubbed, I've tried multiple drivers, I've hit it a few times... Nothing.

The funny thing is; I have no idea how those got on my hard drive. I have an HP, but certainly no Sonic games.
THe most ironic thing is that the company I work for deals with HP

This is no endorsement, but I have an HP PSC 1600, and have since 2005. It has done nothing bad save run out of ink, and I'm pretty sure that's expected. I print music, too, and that's a particular challenge for some printers.

I've just found them, and the company, to be very erratic. My mom's printer does, and always has, worked great. It's an HP scanner/printer. Mine was shipped without either cord, and then when I got both in the mail, the thing still didn't work.

I've had nothing but good experiences with HP, myself. Their printers have always been fantastic, we've still got a 13 year old fell beastie in my parents basement (It plays frickin' Civ 2, gosh darnit!) and my laptop basically survived four years of college. The screen, which was manufactured by Toshiba, had its backlight burn out, but the computer still functions, and so I'm sticking with it.

don't know about HP, but my local computer makers once formatted my hard drive without asking when i had my PC in for repair. turned out they installed the PSU badly and it was causing the RAM to do weird stuff, as well as the whole PC to just randomly cut out. how i laughed and laughed when they told me my hard drive was wiped for no good reason....

Could the operating system support said printer?
On another note, my fiance and I both have HP printers and both work fine.

way to solve printer problems:
1] Dont buy anything made in USA or Asia
2] find a nerd - (god knows there plenty around), and have them check out any problems

I build my own computers. Even though I built/use a PC, I rarely have problems either. If I do have a problem, it's because I'm tinkering with my system (for example, once I accidentally knocked the SATA cable for my hard drive loose while I was trying to get some of the larger dust bunnies out of my case).

they have TWICE the problems PC's have! :p
I've had difficulties with a wide-format HP at one of my previous jobs. We sent the ****** thing back [b]3 times[/i] for replacement units, and only the third worked at all (and not well). That said, it wasn't a top-of-the-line plotter like they have at my current job. That one works fine. I also haven't had problems with any HP printers designed for standard letter-size sheets.
Ah... I was going to say, who could hate HP?

Sucks to hear about your problems with it
But to be honest as someone that has and does work with just about every model of printer out there the alternitive to HP is much worse
Just try Zebra's ... driver set is so bad that a 3rd party company (seagull) drivers can replace it more reliably and with better features then they can
Or dell/lexmark which can lock up a print spooler or specific other (non dell/lexmark) printers on the same server. Just by having the drivers installed (even without an active printer)

True ... we just dont see to many out there
The only models any of our clients use are large scale higher end machines that dont appear to be too bad
Though as we are server administrators and dont really support hardware failure (thats local support) ... but we have not had any reported failures of the few of them we deal with driver problems mostly (as well as software side stuff)
Gestetners appear to be alright too (but rare)

as Local Support, my opinion is that the best, the VERY BEST printer (of the HP line) is still the HP Laserjet 4/4+.
Those are workhorses that will chug out printouts while other latest and greatest models fail.

We have clients with a good run with both the 4's and the LaserJet 1022 series as well (Dont remember if the 4's have network support but the 1022's do)
As we support remote terminal servers network printing is a big plus over redirecting

HP (like Motorola) was one of the great American companies to work for...truely innovative and really into tech...
HP killed itself when a bunch of idiots decided that Carly Fiorina should be made CEO.
Now HP is top heavy with youngster MBA's with little understanding of tech and enterprise continuing to run a once great company into the ground.
So I got an Email for HP with a list of things to do. (Basically making sure that every user has full access via the registry editor). That did not work.
Here are the issues (For the record I did not do the intial install)
When the first install was done the USB cable was plugged in for the enitre process (with this printer you can not plug in the USB until told to do so). I did not install correctly, it would print pages upon pager of garbage.
I Uninstalled.
Now whenever I try to reinstall I get a fatal error message.
I dislike talk to their online tech, even though you give them the session ID from you last conversation, you still have answer all the same questions and tell them what you told the last person

They are good though like Xerox some of the driver sets actually do an imaging print rather then PCL's normal style
What that means is gigantic documents after the spooler gets done with it (a bad thing when dealing with internet connectivity rather then LAN , 200 meg documents take a while to transfer)
