Beverages!

I have recently become interested in the types of wines and other intoxicating beverages which can be obtained and what kinds are in general better than others. Beers are 'meh', but admissible. :D

I don't have much experience with alcohol, and part of the reason I'm asking is because a friend of mine is having his birthday next week and I want to pick him out something good (yes, I'm over 21, it's just that I've never been interested in it).

I tend to like white wines better than reds (bitter-ugh), but feel free to post anything that you enjoy. My price range is sadly limited, so try to keep it below $25-30 USD (the lower the better, as long as it's not nasty). Any other type of drink is allowed too (mixed, etc).

Japanese plum wine is cool. That's probably not the official name for it, but I don't feel like looking it up.

Rum.

Goes excellent with coke. $20 for solid rum, and then a few bucks for some coke.

I never really explored wines. I regret that, because I look at the half to 2/3rds of the liquor store dedicated to wine and I have absolutely no idea where to start.

I have always stuck to beers and spirits. I'd like to explore wines if I could figure them out.

As for beer, I have expensive taste. Best beer I have decent access to in this part of the US is Dogfish Head IPA(60 or 90 minute). Excellent beer. Best beer I've ever had was called Bells Expedition Stout. If you see it, try it.

As far as mixed drinks, I've always been partial to Mudslides(figures, right?) and Margaritas(not frozen). I've tried the Mojito recently and liked it(I like rum), but I tend to shy away from them because that seems to be the Hot Thing right now. Rum is my favorite at home mixer for it's versatility. *nod*

Anchor Steam or Anchor Porter are good beers. So are Sierra Nevada (most famous for their Pale Ale), Old Rasputin, Belhaven Wee Heavy, Murphy's Stout (somewhat like Guinness) and Pyramid Apricot. My taste in beer, like LG's, runs somewhat expensive.

For my money, Ketel One is the best moderate-to-expensive vodka out there, and you can definitely get a medium-sized bottle in your price range. I'm not a big fan of white wines, but I like a nice viognier, so you might look for a bottle of that in the $20-$25 range.

I agree with LG on margaritas over the rocks. Pomegranate ones are way too trendy right now (frigging pomegranate itself is too trendy), but they're absolutely delicious. I don't know about absinthe though, Nanatsu, I've heard it smells like cat urine!

I am primarily a Whisky/Whiskey and Beer fan

My personnel recommendations are as follows

Scotch:
-Highland-
Balvenie Doublewood (http://www.thebalvenie.com/shop/double12yo.html) a great 12 year, price is good and is a nice warm enjoyable scotch

Glemmorangie (http://www.internetwines.com/pa46134.html) a great 10 year scotch great on a cold day (they have a wonderful 18 year old too)

-Islay-
laphroaig (http://www.scotchwhisky.net/malt/laphroaig.htm)a heavy 10 year old Islay, takes a bit to get used to with its heavy flavor and sort of oily taste, but surprisingly something good to come back to

-Lowland-
Auchentoshan (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-257.aspx) surprisingly light tipple distilled scotch ... great

Bourbon
Jack Daniels Gold Medal (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-1130.aspx) Surprisingly good bourbon even though it is not a top specialty of mine (pretty low brow taste when it comes to bourbon)

Irish
Jameson 18 year old (http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-2868.aspx) Great and classic Irish, I happen to be more of a fan then of Bush Mills

Ill get some Canadian recommendations in a bit but all in all these are some that I enjoyed but I am happy with a 13 dollar bottle of Mcmasters and a coke too :)

Perhaps a taste of the Dogfish will change my mind on beers; my previous experience with them is the cheap kinds easily available here.

Pomogranite margaritas sound interesting too...

I've heard about absinthe but what I've heard is that it has (really) toxic chemicals in it, or were in it, or something. I believe it was from wormwood or whatever they use to make it. After reading the article you posted, though, I suppose that was a bunch of crap. :D

The OP did say his price range was 25-30 USD, and I seem a lot of people have put down Whiskey Bourbon and Scotch, and if they are that price in the US damn I hate my governments who chuck excise taxes on our alcohol.

Anyway perhaps you could get a bottle of Apple Schnapps or some other kind. Mirrabella (I think that is how you spell it, it's from France) is good and has a bit of kick in it don't know if it is your price range or not.

Well, one thing I can vouch for absinthe is, it´s not for the faint of heart. I like it, but never in excess. One drawback is that you seem to live in the US and, absinthe, if I´m not mistaken, is illegal over there. Bringing it into the country could get you in trouble and could put you in jail. But try it if you have the opportunity.

From the article there seems to be some reasonable facsimiles of the real thing, made with another plant of the same family, so perhaps I'll try that. And yes, I have no intention of guzzling down whatever I do get, so hopefully I won't have any problems with the stronger stuff... hopefully. :D

Dogfish Head's IPAs are fantastic, but they're not something I'd necessarily recommend to a starting beer drinker. It's hard to know what someone's going to like if they've only had the cheap macrobrews, but a few of the beers that first got me into beer are the Leffe Blonde, Chimay Bleue, and New Belgium Fat Tire (which is less expensive and more common than the first two, but not nearly as good).

Also you could get him whisky or whiskey. There are good suggestions in this thread.

Any number of good beers (Guinness, McEwan's, Belhaven, Newcastle, Boddington's, Stella Artois, real Heineken, etc.), quality Tequila, and real Russian vodka.

And I'm talking about the stuff they simply don't export. My brother-in-law managed to smuggle a bottle of the good stuff on his trip back from Moscow during one of his two-week stays in Russia (he works for NASA). We compared it side-by-side with Smirnoff and Absolut, and several others which I've since forgotten. None of the knockoffs (and they are knockoffs) came close to the real thing. Smooth, smokey, and very drinkable. It's damn good on its own, but mix it with a flavored beverage and you've got a real champ.

It's a shame I can't remember the name on the bottle, but I couldn't read it anyway, as it was in Russian. Damn Cyrillic alphabet.

If you like wine, you might like some mead.

However, how much are you planning to drink at this party? You guys planning to get buzzed, drunk, or wasted? (do the last one!)

If it is option 2 or 3, I'd get some whiskey or vodka, start out with a mixed drink or two, then take shots.

Absinthe would be a great idea though, as said, it's illegal in the USA - I do think you're allowed to import for personal use though, try Sebor on Google, it's Czech, pretty much the real thing and it always adds something to a party, just not sure you have the time to have it delivered.

Ketel 1, Grey Goose and the like are good as presents but a bit of a waste to chug at a party.

Any other vodka is a little boring and one of the multitudes of Vodka likely bought along - there is an Absolut Peppar that might be a little different.

That goes for rum and whiskey as well, either it's lost in the crowd or it's too nice to chug, same with wine to be honest.

I'd say Tequila has always succeeded in making a party, everyone likes Tequila Guy.

I would, myself, bring a reasonable bottle of champagne, it's always good as a gift and they're fairly reasonably priced these days and you can get away with chugging them.

I get Leffe Blonde at $11 for a six-pack, but it's a drive to the nearest liquor store that carries it around here. Chimay's a good bit more expensive, $13 for a single 750-ml bottle at the same store, or I can buy it for maybe a buck more somewhere closer to home. Fat Tire is cheaper, about $9 for a six-pack. My favorite American beer, Abita Turbodog, should be around the same price.

I don't know if you or your friend is a Guinness fan, but if so, consider getting a better stout. Old Rasputin was mentioned, and I'll second it.

It must be nice not have the government taxing your alcohol, hell we have a beer excise that goes up every six months in accordance with the CPI.

Leffe Blonde or any Leffe for that matter is shit. Chimay is good.

But if it is Belgium beers you are going for get Hoegarrden, Kwak or Duvel (but you will need the right glass for that last one). Of course go for some some German Beer not the everday cheap everday shit like Becks, Bitburger and Lowenbrau. Also go for Pilsner Urquell that is a good beer.

Meads are good, and contrary to popular opinion can be dry as well as sweet. However commercial ones can be a bit iffy depending on the brand and lean towards the overly sweet in some cases (although one brand - I believe it was Chaucer - was aged in oak barrels and I personally found it overly tanic).
If you can find a bottle (usually stores that carry it will stock it with dessert wines) it will normally run anywhere from $12-20 a bottle.

It's to late now but my advice if you want to give him something cool next year is to learn how to make your own. It's one of the less complicated beverages to learn how to brew and once you have the equipment you can get a 10-gallon batch for under $25-30 dollars worth of ingredients. You can also add herbs, fruit, or spices to vary the flavor.

I think it's a little more a matter of preference than that. Plenty of people have tried expensive wines and champagnes and prefer the more commercial stuff. But there is quite a difference between the real potato-based vods and others, though you can find labels that produce potato vodka in more and more countries now, even in the U.S.

Yeah. From what I understand (that is, what I've read and what friends who have experience with it have told me), absinthe doesn't have any actual psychoactive (or, perhaps more properly psychedelic...) properties...it just makes you extremely drunk. Although I admit to having only ever had a couple shots.

Glaswegians winos seem to like the taste.

* finally works out multi-quoting - so the minus sign adds thing in not the plus sign how logical is that? *

Japanese plum wine is cool. That's probably not the official name for it, but I don't feel like looking it up.

Ume or umeshu I think.

I love a good, beefy red wine. A cabernet-sauvingon (cab sav) or such like.

As for beers, Coopers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coopers_Brewery) are excellent. I like Coopers Red (Sparkling Ale) best, but Coopers Green (Pale Ale) is very good too.

Oh dear lord. First thing I ever got stupid drunk off of, and I couldn't smell anything vanilla-scented for weeks.

It's good though. Not uber-expensive, a little goes a long way - so you can share, and the vanilla and vodka flavours complement each other. It's pretty effective, and it's yummy. What more do you need. :D

Nope, I reckon Coopers make the best (widely available) beers in Aus. Much better than VB or Crown.

Well if we limit our choices to Australian beer that is widely available I will still have to disagree with you.

What about Boags? You cannot say that Coopersis better than Boags, Cascade is good too.

And don't forget Tooheys Extra Dry and Tooheys Extra Dry Platinum
