Muqtada al Sadr is a gamer?

When he’s not trying to consolidate his power, the radical Shi’ite cleric, best known for his virulent opposition to the American presence in Iraq, apparently kicks backs with video games, although it’s unclear which games or systems he prefers.

How do we know?

GamePolitics gleaned the news from the current issue of Time (cover date July 9). In the mag, Joe Klein pens One Last Chance, a report on U.S. General David Petraeus and the state of the so-callled “surge” by American forces. While reading Klein’s article, we were surprised to come across this:
But the most important man in Iraq is the other Shi’ite prince, Muqtada al Sadr, who is 33 and the nominal leader of the most powerful militia in the country, the Mahdi Army. Al-Sadr is often called mercurial - he’s supposedly a fervent video game player -

Apparently his nickname back in seminary he was known as 'Mulla Atari'.

I guess he wont be banning electronics if he takes over Iraq.

Aah, so THAT'S the reason for the Mehdi Army's often substandard tactics.

i'm not a big fan of first person shooters, but it does raise the interesting question. will a certain come baseline underpinning of modern warfare will be that the soldiers of both sides will have learned their first military or psuedomilitary tactics from the same universally played games?

Overheard at a gaming convention:
[Whiny player:] But you've got to tell me whether I'm alive or dead!
[DungeonMaster:] Well, try some things, and see if you can figure it out.
But, I have a resurrection coming to me!
[sigh] You want to try that?
Yes! Resurrect me!
OK... now you're alive, if you were dead before. You're dead, if you were alive before.

Zarqawi (before he was killed in an airstrike, and before he was a terrorist/freedom fighter) had a glorious career as a video store clerk.

So did Quentin Tarantino.

Does that make Tarantino a terrorist? Or a freedom fighter? Or are we just tired of his movies now?
