Yes, this is slightly old news, but I just found out about it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush on Wednesday authorized military assistance to Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia last month.

Bush signed a Presidential Determination granting Kosovo eligibility to receive defense articles and defense services under the Foreign Assistance Act and the Arms Export Control Act, which require that the president determine that military assistance "will strengthen the security of the United States and promote world peace."

I don't see how selling weapons to Kosovo "will strengthen the security of the United States and promote world peace." Could someone explain to me how this would work?
What do you think? Is this just another case of Dubya trying to pad the pockets of his 'corporate buddies'?

Has Bush done anything to strengthen the security of the United States and promote world peace since becoming President? Why start now? :p

No, and to be different?

I also like how the title of the article is "Bush offers military help to Kosovo" when it really should be "Bush sells weapons to Kosovo".

The Bush 2 administration has been the closest thing in real life to a Peter Griffin presidency.

... nice one there.

We'll be seeing large amount of US Kit in the hands of the Italian Mafia in a couple of years tops, then. *sighs*

Whaddayaknow, supporting the illegal Kosovar independence is done with ulterior, military motives vying to weaken a Russian ally and introduce an even larger military presence, be it by proxy (so far), in the area?

Whod've thunk?

It doesn't. Bush is just mimicking sounds that he's heard.

Bush wants to guarantee the safety of this new Kosovo, which sounds reasonable, because any sovereign state has the right to have defence forces and a military. In the past, the Serbian army raided Kosovo. And of course, this is a small boost for American arms industry. His argument is strange, though.

God for forbid, Dubya might be trying to do some good in the world in last year. The Serbians have tried to ethnicaly purge the Albanians more than once. Giving weapons to defenceless people so they can defend themselves is a good thing.

Why do you think so? Why shouldn't a region have the right to secede from the greater country if it believes that it would be better off making decisions on its own, especially when considering that over 90% of Kosovo's inhabitants are Albanian?

I think he always has tried to do some good in the world. The problem is that he just fucks everything up. This would fall under the same principle as before.

The Serbians have tried to ethnicaly purge the Albanians more than once. Giving weapons to defenceless people so they can defend themselves is a good thing.

Giving weapons to Pristina will only heighten anti-Western sentiment in Serbia and Russia which will serve to bring us even closer to a new Cold War and the centralization of power that results from it. Serbia knows that the Federal government has no compunction against murdering their citizens ("accidentally", of course), and as such are hardly likely to try anything. And as for defending innocent people, if the West was truly interested in that they would have allowed for a partition of Kosovo so that the Kosovar Serbs could be under Belgrade's jurisdiction instead of Pristina, which hasn't done shit to protect them. More likely, this is geopolitcally oriented towards hegemony of the Balkans and a foot in the door for subsidized arms deals for the benefit of the MIC.

yes because regional security was so much better when Serbia, was armed with Russian Weapons and no one else could compete.

Ethnic cleansing was a two-way street, and just keep in mind that the guy running Kosovo, Hacim Thaci, is also the 'ex'-leader of the Kosovan Mafia. If you know anything about Albania, you'll know it's an Italian mafia handout.

As soon as the US sends its guns over, they'll be sold onto the Italian mafia. This is all.

selling arms does not mean we are selling the classified stuff.
Besides it is about time Italy dealt with a mafia armed with tanks.

Well yes, it's not like Kosovo has the money for that, either.

The Mafia won't have tanks, they'll just get a bunch of M4 carbines, I'd imagine. Maybe some older stuff like the LAWs which need selling off. Tanks would be a bit conspicuous, and would lead to trouble from the government, even in Napoli.
