i'm more concerned with the kind of world everyone has to live in, then in what anyone thinks of me individually as a person. i try to avoid being offensive but that's the beginning and end of it. i do feel a need to keep myself clean and looking that way. like i'm not neglecting my appearance entirely. but i'm damd sure not interested in trying to impress anyone with it either.

creating and exploring are where i find gratification. companionship, accumulation and excitement are not.

Does exercise count as working on your appearance? Nah, probably not.

Anyway, showering, shaving, brushing my teeth, applying deoderant and coming my hair takes about 20 minutes. I can't think of anything else I should be doing. What else is there?

Okay: After much consideration, I ticked a heap of boxes
I do skin care: I use sunblock daily so I don't end up with skin cancer by the time I'm 25
My work clothes are old, expensive, but look casual.
I spend very little time on my appearance: Shower, shave, brush teeth & hair, leave house.

Oh, and yes you are procastinating... me too...

Okay, From that I can conclude: you live somewhere where said show was aired. That rules out countries without TVs... From the fact that you called me a banana bender, I can assume you do not live in QLD, but you do infact live in Australia, or atleast used to. Judging by the times you are on, The Australia theory would also sit.

However: this post: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13591407&postcount=15 would suggest you infact either live in UK or used to. As does your posts in the Happy thread on everything been a pommy invention...

So, You are either a Victorian, or a Pom... Either way, you suck :)

I've only ever seen the film so I could come from a country without TV.

However, I'm born in England, living in Asia.

Still suck though.

As to the OP - it really depends on what day, time, event, etc it is.

I'd say everyone cares about their appearance, it's a question of how much they think it's worth doing anything with. Some will have too much to do, in their opinion, to do anything, some will have too little to do and the rest probably muddle along in the middle.

I am specific about what shampoo and conditioner I use if that counts... But beyond basic hygiene, I MAY spend 15 minutes a day on how I look. If fixing the eyebrows when needed and getting one of those OxyPads (the salicylic -however you spell it- acid wipes for your face) sometimes counts. I never wear makeup- unless lip gloss when I'm feeling extra fancy counts. (Last time I wore more than that was when I wore eyeshadow to a semi-formal event last year.) I rarely even have to wash my face because of that- I just usually have good skin. I do "dress up", but that means I wear swishy skirts sometimes.

I don't know. It bothers me that girls my age think they have to wear makeup to look good- we're young and at an age where you probably look gorgeous without it, and it's probably better for your skin to wear less makeup. But it is nice when people make sure they look like they take care of themselves. The worst part of my day is seeing guys who refuse to trim their beards... I hate it. It makes you look gross. At least keep it looking neat!

Now that I've rambled, I may go get some sleep now.

How much do you care about your appearance, and how do you feel about those who take care of their appearance?

[see poll]
I care about my appearance, but not enough to do much about it.

Example: Yesterday I had a big presentation to give at work, so I got "dressed up." One of my coworkers flat-out stared because I was wearing slacks (not jeans). My boyfriend commented that my hair "looked amazing" (I had used a blow-dryer rather than simply letting it air dry). My boss commented that I was looking quite sharp, noting that my shirt had actual buttons down the front.

I could count the number of times I've worn make-up without running out of fingers.

It's not a deliberate personal statement on my part, it's just that there's a million things I'd rather be doing than getting dressed up.

Depends if you're doing it to look hot or to be healthy.

That's about all I do.

I wear mascara every day, but I only wear make up when I'm going somewhere special. Even then, it's only foundation and mascara. I'm pretty lucky skin-wise, but I have really bad allergies, so I have to be really fussy with what shampoo and conditioner I use too.

I think it's nice seeing people who take care of themselves, but I find girls who wear heaps of make up or super "metrosexuals" rather unnatractive.

I care about my appearance, but not enough to do much about it.

I think getting dressed up is fun, and I used to care much more about my appearance, but now it's a relatively clean t-shirt, a pair of jeans and thongs or a hippy dress.

Your poll doesn't have options that apply to me. I take a shower each morning and put on moisturizer and sunblock. I wear mascara sometimes and lipgloss daily (it's got vitamin E and sunblock!) I wear make-up when I have to, and dress up when it's appropriate. Most of the time I wear clothes that would not be considered casual, when hanging out at the house I mostly wear pajamas, outside I either wear business casual or jeans and a t-shirt, none of it's designer really, but it's not old or trashy either. (okay, some of it's old. I have concert T-shirts from the 80's, but still.....they are in good condition)

I care a bit about my appearance, I want to appear clean and "put together" but I don't really buy in to the commercialized thing of what I'm "supposed" to be doing. I don't really care for designer clothes as much as making my own look, I do have an addiction to designer bags, but only buy knock offs. Most of my dresses/pants/skirts I have made myself, I suck at making shirts though. :p

if all of that is tl;dr basically, if I smell good and my hair is clean.....I'm happy.

I do on occasion do big hair, which takes like an hour, but it's only when I have to.

I do try to project myself in a particular way because, like it or not, people WILL judge you by your appearance on some level. In day to day life that means little to me but at work I do need to look professional.

What's important is: What I want to project is what *I* want to project, not necessarily what people want.

For example. I absolutely do not ever wear my sleeves down unless I'm wearing a suit. Ever. At work I wear business attire but my button down shirt has the sleeves perpetually rolled up. I don't care what people think of that. I even dress that way at job interviews. I think the advantage is that when your sleeves are rolled up you look like you're ready to work. I dunno but it's only ever been a problem once, and that was for a job I doubt I'd have taken anyway.

I even roll the sleeves up on my jacket unless it's cold enough to need the liner in it.

My morning routine is the very picture of simplicity. I get up and immediately hit the shower. My hair is very short so washing it takes no time using a generic version of Head & Shoulders. I take care of all my personal grooming there. I have become adept at shaving without a mirror and using th ehot water from the shower means I don't even need shaving cream. Yep, even brushing my teeth. (That comes last.) Then I brush my hair real quick, again, it's short so 5 or 6 strokes and I'm done. I have thick hair so I require no hair gel. Then I get dressed and off I go. Total morning routine time: 5-25 minutes depending on whether I'm running late or I can relax and anjoy a long, hot shower, and no matter how much or how little time I take I'm out looking exactly the same.

On casual days I wear a t-shirt and jeans or camo pants, depending upon what I'm doing or my mood.

On Sunday for church I wear a suit and I generally let my wife choose my tie because I think it matters more to her than it does to me. Of course, my sleeves must be down because it's a nice damn suit. (For the Lord, I roll my sleeves down. Not for anybody else.)

Here is my morning shower routine on days when I shave:

1. Take shower. Wash self, paying special attention to armpits to clean off yesterday's sweat.
2. Finish shower by washing hair. This involves putting shampoo in, waiting a little bit, and then rinsing it out.
3. Dry off.
4. Brush teeth. Afterwards, inspect to make sure teeth are clean.
5. See if mustache or beard need trimming.
6. Shave face. If mustache or beard need trimming, do this during shaving. My beard is not a full beard, just a beard on the tip of my chin.
7. Get dressed. Before putting on shirt, put on deodorant.
8. Brush hair. Straighten beard if necessary.
9. Leave the bathroom and go about the rest of my day.

That is pretty much the extent of my appearance maintenance.

I put less effort into my clothing and appearance than the majority of women I know, but apparently more than the majority of people on NSG. I guess that puts me somewhere near normal?

Honestly, while I do blowdry my hair, wear concealer and lipgloss (shadow and liner only if I'm going out or get bored) and buy mid-tier clothes (I own ONE pair of super expensive jeans and I didn't buy them)... I would still say that I somehow manage to be tomboyish and sloppy. I don't know how, it's just a gift.

I also wouldn't really call it vanity, since I have so many body and appearance issues that 90% of the time I think I look like a hideous cave monster regardless.

I shower, tie my hair out of the way and clean my teeth before dressing in jeans and jumper. I do own some eye-liner and lipstick that I bought for a fancy dress party a couple of years ago (I went as Morticia Adams), but I'm not sure where it is. I don't own a hair-dryer or other implements and I only own 1 set of footwear (a pair of Docs). My bf has all the wardrobe space and a large set of drawers, whilst I manage to get all my clothes into a small set of bedside drawers and 1 shelf for jumpers :p

I used to work in a very smart environment (corporate banking) but still got away with a couple of home-made suits and my docs, although I think I was seen as a bit of an eccentric. I care about being clean and healthy, but what I look like is not my problem - it's not me that has to look at me :D

Generally for me it depends on where I'm going during the day. If I'm going somewhere like a job interview, I'll dress nice/normal which takes maybe 20 miutes to half an hour in the morning.
But if I'm just going out for the sake of going out, that skyrockets to an hour or more. But when you're gothic it takes a fair bit of time to do make up that doesn't have you looking like a baby bat, and putting on a corset by yourself is something I have yet to master without getting flustered.
I have a bad case of body dysmorphic disorder though, and gothing my little self out makes me feel good. Dressing any other way or even looking in a mirror when I'm without make up on makes me feel either naked or disgusted in myself.

Then again i think you should represent the homeless in society by dressing like a homeless person, or even represent the average casual dresser. It really isolates the public from the government when they dress all snazzy, they should dress how they want to, you should dress how you want to. anyway, other than that.

Then again i think you should represent the homeless in society by dressing like a homeless person, or even represent the average casual dresser. It really isolates the public from the government when they dress all snazzy, they should dress how they want to, you should dress how you want to. anyway, other than that.
Have a hero. (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xdQDYrOAht4)
damn you have a cool job. must refrain from starting rebellion from inside, must refrain...must...change...topic...foood..ah all better now.

I completely agree.

I only feel good about myself and am comfortable when I look bad. I can't stand looking good. I had to wear a dress to school and it was horrible. It was like I couldn't be invisible anymore. Random people talked to me and asked me where I got the dress instead of calling me the devil. I felt like everyone was staring at me. It felt really bad. Like 10 people complimented me in one day, it was so unnatural.

I'm so worried about this interview tomorrow because I guess part of how they rate you is appearance and I don't think it's fair that I should be downgraded just because of how I look.

Good, then the next time i see any government people, they must all be wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
I mean, take my old perceptions of government officials:
When i was younger i used to see Mr Blair or some other politician, always wearing a suit, all of them smiling, i mean no one i know smiles to people they don't know unless they're about to rob them of money.
Even the way they dressed, just spoke of snobbery, the fact that their jobs involved wearing fancy suits and talking to senior people, making big decisions, while my own existance consisted of...well nothing even remotely the same as that, so why should i vote for any of those well dressed, well-spoken politicians when they don't even resemble who i am.
Take my example of how they spoke, always with long fancy words i had no notion of what they meant, they were surrounded by pieces of paper. how many of you carry about pieces of paper in your spare time? not many i'll bet.

I mean when was the last time you ever saw a politician in the pub? just drinking away to sing some daft song on a dukebox?
I'm not asking for them to suddenly pretend they all have farmers roots, or are really just like one of the rest of the average working joes, i'd just like to see them not wear a suit, just once for them to be dressed like shit. Because let's face it, no-one is perfect, no one can keep up a constant image of being wonderful.
Politics shouldn't be about who can be perfect, or look good, it should be about the people who vote for them, it should be about the people who work so many hours for their families, you don't need a three-piece suit to tell your partner you love them, you don't need a suitcase to play football, you don't need to use complex words when arranging a doctors appointment.
Politicians have run away from basic human actions, that is why so many people hate them, because they show no resemblence to them.

I always wear nice clothes when I go out in public. Now if only this crappy weather would get better, I could give my car a proper washing and make it look good too.

Like it or not, appearance counts for a lot, and it's important to make a good first impression.

Also, is it vain to wear clothes that match your car? :p
Lapse

oh and my stance is pro-Lapse. although this could change.:D

you obviously haven't heard about the last person who decided they were anti Lapse... Mr Rick Astley now knows what happens when people cross Lapse...

well, as long as you don't say anything silly i'll stay pro-Lapse.
As a matter of interest what did happen to Mr Rick Astley, i recall he made that interesting song about "never gonna let you down"?

well the problem with looking good is, if i ever see you i'll be pretty hateful of you, as in jealously. It affects me more than most people.

Oh and wearing clothes that match your car is okay, so long as no one else is aware of this. What's the point of matching your car? i mean really, it's a fuel guzzeling monster that can kill an infinite number of people should you feel so inclined to drive it a certain way, and you're worried about how you look?
(okay so i admit i'm taking this waaay too far, but hell i like a good brawl in the mud)

You know, MHiJ, some say that giving too much importance to a car is called ´compensating´... ;)

No no. You´re not the one compensating, dear.:D So, don´t feel like a slut. You know what they say when a small guy buys an SUV?

Physical appearance? Barely at all.

But vanity is somewhat broader than that. I am very vain about other aspects of how I am perceived.

He'd better make sure he has a booster seat when driving it?

What's wrong with wanting to keep my car clean and well maintained? I just don't want people thinking I'm a lazy slob. :(
