Islamic preacher Abu Qatada has won an appeal against deportation from the UK which could lead to him being freed.

Qatada - in prison pending deportation to Jordan - has been dubbed "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe".

The Home Office says it will challenge the ruling, and in the meantime he will remain in prison.

The Court of Appeal said it was concerned that evidence allegedly obtained under torture may form part of a future trial in Jordan.

The Jordanian national has been fighting extradition to his home country where he has been convicted for terror attacks.

I don't see how we owe him anything, he's not a British citizen and it seems pretty clear that he's an undesireable who's presence isn't good for this country. We need to repeal the laws which prohibit the deportation of scum like him. Thoughts?

I think you're wrong.

Human rights are not something that we should dismiss as 'undesirable' laws. And people who take the attitude 'who cares what happens to people' are much more of a presence that we could do without in this country.

Short answer: Because we shouldn’t act like dickheads.

Long answer: Because holding the right to a fair trial as an important feature of a good society means more than just giving citizens the right to a fair trial (not hat the current UK government seems to care much about the right to a fair trial). It trying in a court fairly anyone who enters the UK courts; citizen or no.

(I'm in the USA) I don't understand why this nation keeps so many people who don't belong in our prisons. It's one thing to keep terrorists who pose a major threat, but we have so many people who don't need to be here. I don't get why we waste the money keeping illegal aliens in prison for crimes they've done.

Immediate deportation should be the one and only penalty for felonies commited by non-citzens.

whether or not you believe every person's life is of equal worth, that is how the laws are written. This system mkaes sure that no one gets screwed over unless they deserve it. By treating everyone theoretically equal in the eyes of the law proper democracies prevent corruption, oppression, elitism, racism, sexism etc. that easily happens when these principles are not applied.

Has he been convicted of a crime? If not, then it matters.

I find it hard to imagine a man under a control order (effectively house arrest with limited access to persons, the internet, etc.) and constant surveillance would have much chance of exploding a bomb.

I am against calling a single human being scum; all humans are scum. The idea that some should be treated thus while others are not seems unfair to me.
