New antislavery law may be wrongheaded

Interesting...
(http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/04/09/america/letter.php)

Here's an arresting allegation: More slaves are now imported (though the current word for this is trafficked) into the United States annually than were imported in an average year during the American colonial era.

That is one of the talking points used lately by the author of an arresting new book on global slavery, "A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery," by E. Benjamin Skinner.

In fact, of course, at the height of the legal slave trade in the 19th century, many more African slaves were "trafficked" to the United States than are arriving now, but globally there may be more people in slavery than ever. Still, it comes as a shock to read Skinner's accounts of the people - the U.S. State Department estimates 600,000 to 800,000 brought across international borders each year - forced to work around the world under threat of violence for no pay.

What do you of NSG think?

Ive actually read that book. Its excellent. But horrifying.

EDIT: Anyway, on the article, I do agree that the law is poorly done. The assumption that all prostitution is slavery is false. Im suprised the feminists the article mentions didnt see through that. The Evangelical Christians, meh I bet they saw through it, but see it as another chance to wage a war on dirty, filthy, sinful sex.

i think its wrong to call it slavery when it has no force of law. if a "slave" escapes some sweatshop in los angeles, she will not be returned to her "master".

I'm slightly surprised that the US has this problem, however i'm sure it's evident in many other so-called developed countries.
Slavery=suffering
suffering=bad
Therefore Slavery eventually becomes a bad thing. Commentary please DyaKovo.
They should have got rid of slavery by now.
That is what i think.

I, personally, think that it is well intentioned, however, it is rather ridiculous to say that every prostitute is a slave.

That's debatable.

That's debatable.

Some cases are indentured servitude at worst. Some (key word here).

Except that it isn't. It is fact, not every prostitute is a slave. Some are slaves, some choose the work of their own will.

Like that math prodigy someone posted an article about a while ago.

Who would've guessed that when the world's population increases by a factor of five, so does the volume of trafficking.

Welcome back to General, Kwangistar. It's been much too long since you graced us with your conservative presence.

You stole my thunder, but as long as it gets pointed out, what's the difference, right?
