Epilepsy attacks induced through the internet
Someone planted on the epilepsy support message board posts with hidden javascript that led to flashing images inducing epilepsy seizures. This raises being an asshole to a new level. (Or, perhaps, it's a new tactic of CoS to smear the image of Anonymous.)

Eh, it's been doable for years. What kind of slack jawed retards allow javascript in posts though?
Use NoScript people. Firefox FTW.

The point is, it has never been done intentionally before.

Welll... a lot of people are like that. Amazing isn't it.

My impression is that it's a Co$ operation (notice how according to the article EBaumsWorld was mentioned in the offensive posts and 7Chan was allegedly cited as hosting the planning of the attacks, as if the "hackers" wanted to place blame) but if this somehow turns out to be a genuine Anonymous raid, then it's a foot bullet. Shit like this is what'll push the government towards what Co$ desperately wants: Tightened control and censorship of the Internet.

I see two main possibilities:
Anonymous did it, but thats like saying 'Communists did it', there are so many types, factions, subrgoups, and part-timers who call themselves 'Communist' that such a statement is virtually meaningless. Anonymous is confined by no single ideaology, set of morales, rules, or...anything, really.
Its sort of the point, you know? Anonymous is anonymous and because Anonymous is anonymous blaming anonymous acts on Anonymous is sort of obvious.
The other, being a CoS operation, seems likely as well. Of course, attempting to smear Anonymous didnt work very well in the past (lol FOX, gay sex on the internet hate machine, etc.).
A third option is that CoS paid a group of Anonimii to do this, which seems less likely, but still possible.

I do not know what technology was used in the attacks, but NoScript would not have been effective against a GIF animation. AdBlock would not have filtered it until it was manually blocked, which is too late when you already have a seizure.
On Slashdot I saw some speculation about a technology that could recognize harmful content - perhaps by comparing contrast levels, the frequency and rhythm of pulsing patterns - and automatically blocking it. It would require a great deal of sophistication, however.
Meanwhile, let's just be glad that they didn't post BLIT (http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/blit.htm) or Snow Crash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Crash) images. :)

Epileptics should stop whining. Javascript-induced seizures are a good way to cause brain damage and give traumatic experiences. Dostoevsky was an epileptic and he decided to write really long books about "Jesus saves!" Really, we must convert these heathens with epilepsy to Christianity so that instead of being whiny loonies, they can become prominent Russian literary figures who are whiny loonies. :D

Javascript embedded in the seemingly innocuous forum post would have been filtered just fine. And that's what the attackers used to redirect the victims' browsers to the pages containing actual harmful content.

The offenders should be punished.
This reminds me of this idiot who put a coin in a homeless guy's crack while he was lying on the ground waiting for the ambulance we called him. He deserved to be beaten, and I'm not usually an advocate of physical violence.

For a moment I had a dumb "What happens when you smoke a coin?" moment, then I figured it out.
Geez, I'm glad my seizures aren't triggered by flashing lights. Now if they find a way to control the temperature through the internet...
Then again, sleep deprivation also brings on seizures, and I could blame the internet for that plenty of times. :p

I don't know...
All I know is that I resorted to violence... and I'm not really one to do that. I chased after him, grabbed him by the shirt and started shoving him and yelled "don't you have a soul?" I probably would have really hurt him if the ambulance didn't turn up just as it was happening... I'm kind of embarrased, haha.
May have something to do with a pervasive undercurrent of an interpretation of "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth".
And an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
....if this somehow turns out to be a genuine Anonymous raid, then it's a foot bullet.
The Anonymous that would do this is not, and does not give a shit about, the Anonymous that protests against Scientology.

The foot bullet has nothing to do with the success or failure of Project Chanology. It has everything to do with forcing the U.S. Government to significantly monitor and control Internet traffic within the continent to a point much more to the Co$'s liking, and thus to everyone else's discomfort.

They wont ever catch who did it. Good hackers are not easy to catch. Anon is made up of good hackers.
If it isnt Anon, who cares when they catch him anyway?

Well, if the animated image were large enough, the whole monitor might not have been needed. So even the img tag on its own is dangerous - but fortunately a lot of forums allow you to turn posted images into links, like this one. I use that setting to ensure work-safety, actually.
The first time someone posted SnowCrash joke on a discussion group I used to read it sent shivers down my spine.

I kinda doubt whether epileptics would be using the internet anyway, since there is always the possibility that they'd run into a banner ad that would flash and set off a seizure. Now, I know that this site would be seen as a safe place, but still, it's questionable how many people this could have affected.
CoS wants to introduce government censorship of the Internet? Got proof of that statement?
[Note: Asking Youtube to remove a video is not censorship.]

It's the amount of censorship that they can get away with at this point. I would like to see proof of that claim though.

He finds the deliberate triggering of seizures to be a laugh riot. Trollgaard is a eugenicist who believes anyone with a physical defect should not have their conditions corrected or their life assisted in any way, including prosthetic limbs or medical treatments.
That on top of being a wannabe-warlord who believes that might makes right for any nation and you have the profile of a cartoon villain.
CoS wants to introduce government censorship of the Internet? Got proof of that statement?
[Note: Asking Youtube to remove a video is not censorship.]
If there is well enforced censorship of the internet then the CoS would have a much easier time of hiding their copyrighted beliefs from everyone who hasn't paid for them.

And yet you still haven't found evidence that Scientology supports state censorship of the Internet.
If such censorship emerges, it'll promptly go after NRMs. And Scientology will be fucked.

[Note: Asking Youtube to remove a video is not censorship.]
It is when you have no legal ownership of that video and thus no legal basis for asking for the removal of the video, providing it does not violate the terms of service for Youtube.
Now that's assuming COS has no ownership of the video (assuming we're talking about the Tom Cruise thing, which I was under the impression that they did not copywrite it, or if they did, not until after it was leaked). They certainly do not have ownership of the Anon video, and thus blah legality blah.
