Looking for music suggestions

The Mindset
07-04-2008, 12:34
I'm currently home for Easter, and have access to a nice big fat connection. Back in my term time lodgings I have an atrociously bad internet connection so to compensate for my lack of ability to experience new music there, I'm currently on a quest to source as much new music as possible before I return on Friday.

So, my lovely NS generalite friends, do you have any suggestions for music? My taste is fairly varied: I primarily enjoy electro and all its subgenres, blues, indie and most other stuff. I know that there's a lot of metal fans on NS, and as I've expressed in the past, I despise the stuff so any recommendations of that genre will fall on deaf ears.

The album 'Life in Cartoon Motion' by Mika, Grace Kelly is a pretty well known track from it. I am currently listening to the album, and it's very good.

I have that album, but I can't say I'm a big fan of Mika.

If you are looking for something you have never heard before, try the first two Os Mutantes albums. Weird and definitely wonderful.

I just got the new Gnarls Barclay, which is a very nice slice of 'modern motown' and the Black Keys new one is growing on me.

Try Tori Amos, anything from her is amazing, or at least I think so. If you enjoy electro, Eisbrecher is good too. Also Unheilig. (both bands are German) Oomph! also I reccomend.

Any of the albums by Ladytron... they're just about the only music-performance group that can put out an album where I like almost all of the songs (give or take a couple).

If you like electro then you should try Simian Mobile Disco's latest album, it's actually better then you think it'll be, so I suggest that.

I'll second VNV Nation and Wumpscut.

Also (to the OP)...I seem to recall you like a bit of post rock. Check out Kyte, Her Name is Calla, You Slut!, ...And So I Watch You From Afar and This Will Destroy You. Moving more towards metal, have a listen to 5ive (not that 5ive!) - their new album, Hesperus, is getting good reviews all over the shop (from Rock Sound to the Guardian, via the NME and Terrorizer) - Pelican, Boris, Health and Serotonal.

Oh, and 65daysofstatic. Of course.

But Easter was last month...I'z confused.

As for music, I don't know of any truly indie bands, in the sense of them not having a record label. I'll do what I always do and recommend piano music by Robert Schumann. He's kind of indie...

You win.

Also, if you like indie music possibly consider Josh Ritter. My favorite songs from him are "The Temptation of Adam" and "Rumors"

One of my favorite bands is Relient K (spelled incorrectly on purpose). The have lots of different sounding songs. They're Christian rock, but not all of their songs are religious.:)
Divine Imaginary Fluff

Loop12 - group making very strange noise. They have recordings of their performances on their site, and I'd recommend the first one. Apart from being really, really incoherent, nonsensical and with a distinct, somewhat disquieting atmosphere at times, it also doubles as the only birthday song I'd willingly inflict upon myself.

You mean Time's Up? Or Vernon's 2nd album with Masque? Both are excellent, but I think Masque may be more to the OP's taste than Living Colour, since he said he dislikes metal (not that LC doesn't mix in a lot of other influences besides).
