Just watching Full Metal Jacket, so I thought I'd see what NSG thinks on the matter.

Apocalypse Now! isn’t a Vietnam war movie, it's a movie about conflict and human conduct that just happens to be set during the Vietnam war. :p

The Green Berets is missing from that list... =(

Also Hamburger Hill, Flight of the Intruder, The Boys in Company C...

Also, Full Metal Jacket is not a Viet Nam war movie. It's a Stanley Kubrick movie set in Viet Nam.

In the specific sub-genre of Vietnam War horror films I would go with R-Point.

Also known as a movie rendition of Conrad's "Hearth of Darkness". "The horror! The horror!"

R Lee Ermey makes up for all the things wrong w/ Full Metal Jacket. Imagine if Kubrick had gone along w/ the actor who was supposed to portray Gunny Hartman.

Also, this is one of the best quotable movies ever!

Full Metal Jacket is good, in small doses. It's a bit...much...otherwise, if that makes an sense whatsoever.

Platoon is my favorite. Great characters (not everyone's a kill crazy psycho), great story, good "good vs. evil" setup.

Damn, I've been trying to find out the name of that film for years since I read a review of it in the TV guide, but missed it when it was on TV.

Thanks!

Anyways, We Were Soldiers was ok and I didn't find Mel Gibson to be as insufferable as usual.

I do like the idea of a Heart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearth) of Darkness though

Platoon. There is no contest here.

We Were Soldiers is garbage, patriotic pro-America/pro-Vietnamn War schlock and it appalls me that it is even on this list:p

"Death? Whatd y'all know bout death?"

Full Metal Jacket and Born on the 4th of July are also solid (despite having Tom Cruise). I find Apoc. Now to be a bit overrated, all though it is hard to beat the scene with the helicopter squad blasting "Ride of the Valkaryies" when they are attacking :p

The only one I've seen from start to finish is Platoon...I've seen parts of Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Born on the Fourth of July.

Not that I like watching any war movie (most of them suck IMHO), but it appears that I'm not alone.

The recent spate of war movies that are based on the current war have bombed at the box office (sorry for the bad pun).

I'd rather do something else than watch a movie, really.

What is with all this war movie hate? War movies are the best movies made- it doesn't matter if they are about modern war, medieval war, or ancient war, they are awesome.

We were soldiers is my favorite 'Nam movie.

Born on the 4th of the July and Platoon sucked major ass. FMJ was alright.

My favorite listed is We Were Soldiers. I thought that it brought a more detailed analysis of the battlefield, and it also documented the early implementation of the Airmobile (Air Assault) doctrine, which I enjoy for many reasons.

One Nam movie worth mentioning is 'Tigerland'. I know that it starred Colin Farrell, but it was interesting in that it dealt solely with the recruiting/training phase, as opposed to actual in-country Vietnam. I liked it.

FMJ is worthy, although I tend to watch the first half about three times as much as the second half.

Not so fond of Platoon. Casualties of War is even worse, IMHO.

Apocalypse Now was based on Heart of Darkness, but there were also very clear parallels between the colonial genocide in the 19th century Beligian Congo and the post colonial bloodbath that was 60s Southeast Asia... i think the film was about the Vietnam war even though it was based on a novella(?) about an earlier conflict. most of the main themes of are at least somewhat universal, but isn't that true of any great art? the movie is by far my favorite Vietnam war movie, it didn't try to take a partisian side in the politics of the war, it illustrated the horror of all wars and all human abandonment of humanity.

Platoon was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and I had to watch it about 5 or 6 times. I can't believe it won "best film". Apparently it's versimillitude is amazing, but I can't honestly believe that a film that changed the war from a terrible, losing battle to the story of a hero's (who is in my mind an anti-hero) journey. Ugh. It's just such a BAD movie.

Apocalypse Now, of course.

The fact that I've worn the "Colonel Kilgore" outfit on Halloween makes that obvious.

I actually read Heart of Darkness before I saw A-Now.
