Bad forum experiences

I've been a member of, or attempted to register on several forums, and its generally ended badly (through no fault of my own). So out of morbid curiosity, what's the worst experience you've had on a forum? No need to name the forum in question, since some less reputable forums will mass invade and disrupt forums that criticize them(or so I've heard).

People don't like you because you post the same thing multiple times.

edit: The multiple posts are gone now.

I've owned a forum that I thought was small and wouldn't cause a lot of trouble. I soon found out that the less people you get involved in politics, the nastier it can get. Even though I tried to avoid it, we had a forum war with ANOTHER small gaming forum, and a third forum kept attacking us with spam. A few weeks after my forum opened, all of the 200 people who had signed up were gone. It was pretty active when it first started and it was fun at times so it's sad what happened. Managing people just isn't easy.

Whups! You had a quadruple-post of this thread (I've removed the other three). Unfortunately our forums can lag at times, and when that happens clicking the "Submit" button multiple times can reproduce your post. That's about the worst I've suffered online.

Speaking as a Mod, I think NationStates is pretty neat - so long as you're not an asshole you should be fine. :)

Sorry about the multiple posts. That's never happened to me before, and needless to say I'm very embarrassed.

Still not the worst that I've experienced, though. That was going on a trip, coming back, and finding out I'd been permanently banned for something I wouldn't even have known on to do, technically. I even sent two complaint e-mails, both of which were ignored.

That site had a lot of technical problems, so I figure that's the cause, but they could have been polite enough to answer my e-mail, at least.

All I'm going to say is never say "yes" if you want the "Suprise" on an Oriental Dating Forum. There's alot of Thailand lady boys on those forums. *nods*

Idiots in general. Forums draw them like rot draws flies. Ignorable as a poster, but when you have the mod responsibility on your shoulders goddamn they are a headache.

I've only ever contributed to two forums - Nationstates and one language-learning forum. Although "contributing" might be a bit generous a word to describe posting here. :p More like "participating." But I do think I've helped other contributors to the other forum, especially since most questions are about points of grammar or translation, which is simple enough usually.

No bad experiences yet.

Gamefaqs. The ultimate combination of n00bs and elitist jackasses.
I dont think any further elaboration is required. I mean, its like...required to have been a member there at one point. And even if you havent, you should know the reputation. Their mods are even more nazi-fied than the ones he-
*Suddenly knocked out and stuffed into a black helicopter.*

Another was the Tropicana Cafe or something...a forum for good ol' Tropico, the game. Apparently disagreeing with senior members is against the rules there. Think Nationstates, only with some sort of bashing being officially sanctioned by the mods.
I never got banned there, though. Just ostracized. Good times >_>

I was punished with posting moderations at Sci-Fi Meshes for offering constructive criticism to some of the newer artists. When I changed by avatar to something one poster found insensitive I submitted several potentials to one of the mods, I don't remember which, got one cleared, and then got banned for it the next day because the mod didn't known the meme.

I've broken back in several times since to give them a little grief for banning me for using something moderator-approved but it's been a while. Good forum, lots of good artists, a questionable admin but I recommend it to any sci-fi fan.

I had a pretty lame experience here once. Some guy starts a thread about Timothy McVeigh. I'm one of the first to reply, and I say that McVeigh was an evil asshole. OP starts defending McVeigh, I tell him that doing so would end badly for him, the guy snaps, and gets himself banned.

Nutjobs are friggin' everywhere.

I was forum banned here for a month once something like 4 years ago. I have no idea why though. Can't remember to save my life.

Once my invisionfree forum, which I use solely to upload images and record my thoughts for RP planning, crashed then restored, saving all my text but deleting all of my pictures. That was pretty shitty.

Around 4 or 5 years ago I was the Admin for a forum that regularly had over 100 people online at one time. It now has 0 people online. It doesn't exist.

Around 6 or 7 years ago I was part of a forum where I did my first RPing. I was a great time, and I met a lot of cool people there. It too no longer exists. The people moved on.

And finally, years ago I played Star Wars Galaxies. Their forum still gives me nightmares.

I've never really had a bad experience on forums, except sometimes with moderators being a bit overzealous.

well.. I was thinking of writing an extended rant on how NS is uptight, but I decided that it would firstly sound very prickish... And besides, you all know my opinion on NSG...

On other forums I have been to, there is generally a clique of people that only discuss things amongst themselves, and anyone else on the boards is the enemy.. That pisses me off...

I haven't had any bad forum experiences, but I have given plenty of other people bad ones. Especially during a very brief RPing spell I had on a Transformers forum...whee that was fun :D

I remember making a complete ass of myself once on another forum. This guy had just lost his girlfriend, I said something about how he'd learn to love it, not knowing she had been run over by a bus and died. For this, and a tendency to gravedig, the mods found me rather irksome, and I think there are like three posters I'd consider friends. I was voted Most Annoying Member of 2007 and I was only there for a couple of months by then. I pretended to be proud but...you know. And I made a rather stupid comment on a poster's blog (again not knowing all the facts) and the owner of the forum called me a disgrace. Now that's bloody outrageous.

I've been pretty lucky with forums so far, but I do have one bad experience.

It was just a matter of all of the good mods leaving and being replaced with lazy bastards who would either not do anything to the worst offenders or ban people for completely ridiculous reasons...so I left.

The BBC's 606 forums. The best way to summarise it is to say that it's where all the retards go to insult other about things they disagree on, and sports related.

Other than that my general forum experience consists of here and some small band messageboards where people are generally polite.

Oh, and Drowned in Sound's forums. Which is full of indie-dicks fawning over the 'next big thing' and claiming they've been into them since the beginning. Never actually posted there as it didn't look too appealing.

I was once banned until December 5th 1911 for mentioning how the Germans where initially greeted as liberators in Stalins Russia (the replies where worth it) possibly being topped with my only visit to a RP forum

on NS it has to have been some Marine-fake poked fun once of how I failed selection for the British commandos (due to this all posters who claim/are to be USMC or USMC affiliated are deemed enemies of the state and I have an utmost grudge against them) other than that its only the odd US-type who tries to upset the flow :)

yeah i've had a few bad experiences, but nothing to speak of really. Just part of the internet, a big web of seething hatred waiting to spite you. I wouldn't cry if i lost my internet connection, put it that way.

the only other forum i've been a real member of (as in stayed around long enough to get >100 posts, and where people knew me a little) was the old Iron Maiden BB. one weekend nobody could sign in for some reason... the following monday, the mods told us the forum's servers had killed themselves, and the forum database was gone. an interim forum was set up, but a lot of posters didn't move over, and those that did often changed their names. nobody knew who anybody was (for the most part) and most of the old posters drifted away for good, including me.

it got worse, however, when i tried to go back and see what the place was like a couple of years ago. it was just shite

that's about it though. i like this place :)

Early on, I learned that most forums where politics are discussed will fall prey to having one-minded administration and one-minded membership. This has been the case on every forum I've been a member of.

It looks like it's the case here - for any of these forums, define a fairly narrow band of political beliefs, and shout down and ban anyone who doesn't fit. The "arguments" are rarely arguments.

So, to me, political forums are rarely of the real value they purport to be - they are not truly places where different beliefs are freely debated in the true nature of free speech - they are merely places where people of the same political beliefs feel good about themselves because their political beliefs are reinforced by hearing the same thing and being assisted by moderators in beating down any beliefs they don't believe should see the light of day.

For those of you who love the First Amendment, the Internet is a place of free expression - but within the confines of any single forum, there's only tyranny of the majority.

I've seen forums that are better at allowing free thought than others, but the problem then becomes the population - a clique rapidly forms that will make the forum so hostile that people with other beliefs just leave - even if the moderators are being very fair.

On this forum, there was a day where I realized that all of these people who considered themselves intelligent weren't that smart.
Then I realized that I considered myself intelligent.
That was an unpleasant feeling.
