I wouldn't kill anyone, but if I could remove one person from the position they enjoy in society (character assassination), it would be a toss-up between some third world dictator and Hillary Clinton. Remember, if you kill someone you run the risk of making them a martyr, and of giving their successors an excuse to do what ever they want in the name of security. Even as a joke, this thread touches a nerve for me because it shows how people need to think through the consequences of their policies. In the short term killing a monster may seem desirable, but it has some interesting long term effects as well, to say the least. First, you have reduced yourself closer to the level of the person you're trying to remove. Second, you have potentially made them a martyr, and thus strengthened their cause. Third, your action has helped their supporters justify further atrocities in response. Finally, you've probably killed a lot of the sympathy others might have held for you and your cause.

This is also why I am offended by the underlying premis of so called "idealism vs realism" debates: it asumes that realism and idealism are distinct entities, and that ideaism is not always, if ever, practical in real world situations. In fact it is idealism that useualy proves the sounder policy in the long-term, reducing the so called "realist" possition to mere short-term thinking, the result of greed, arogance, impatiance, or ineptitude.

Sorry for the rant, but this question has an underlying relevance to the issue of assassinating someone like Putin or Kim Jong Il, or even George Bush. In the end, the assassin will likely end up hurting themselves.

It generally isn't worth it to assassinate any prominent figure. They are easily replaced because most belong to systems or groups that have a means of replacing them. Aside from the replacement taking their place, you then have the whole negative thing of martyrdom, etc.

Think of most people who have been assassinated - they became bigger, larger, and more enduring than if they had simply been allowed to live on. They're frozen in time right at their peak of freshness and light.

And, if your side does the assassinating, you'll permanently blacken your side with the tar of immorality.
