I think Bush is trying to take over the whole Commonwealth before he leaves. It's already worked with Gordon Brown, the Canadian Prime Minister, and this Rudd bloke now.

Kevin Rudd is a Queenslander, and up here our joke salute could very well replace a handshake. I had expected the article to take the tone the salute was disrespectful.

The medias just blown this out of proportion as with almost every other news story on the planet. He gave a joking salute, it doesn't mean any more than that, but I guess if you read into anything enough you'll see what you want...

They're both lucky. The old salute was a punch to the jaw. That might have landed your PM in Guantanamo. :p

Hopefully Gordon Brown will top this by giving Bush a Glasgow kiss the next time they meet. In fact, we could have a greet-off, with the best greeting, based on its humiliation, style and Bush's pure surprise being made the official UN Salute.

Could be good times, really.

After saluting, Rudd strode through other NATO leaders to shake Bush's hand and spoke to the U.S. president while smiling.

We could use a little more levity between national leaders.

It's just the moronic media trying to beat up stories again, really who gives a shit.

Australia and the US have had a strong relationship with each other since 1942 and the leaders of both countries have gotten on well together.

The only problem with this story is that the 'lefties' in Australia can't say much because it is Rudd doing it, you can be damn sure that had Howard every done it, for some strange reason the Australian media would have taken even more trouble to criticise it and the 'lefties' would be up in arms over it

Yes you are quite right there should be more levity between world leaders, which is why I am befuddled when people laughed at Bush when he thanked Tony Blair for the jumper he gave him.

The Australian saluted Bush tongue-in-cheek? Wow, this is only the 452,785th time someone's done that.

must be a very slow news day if the media is trying to make an issue out of this. Oh noes! A leader with a sense of humour! How dreadful!

Being a teacher, I often salute some of my students. They think it's hilarious. And even they, at the tender age of 7, know it's nothing more than a joke. So how come people much older - and presumably wiser - don't?

I see they've been stirring up their usual pleasantries about Asians (http://www.tv3.co.nz/News/NationalNews/PetersdefendsdeputysantiAsianimmigrationcomments/tabid/423/articleID/51355/cat/64/Default.aspx).

"Maori people! Listen to us! Soon, if nothing is done, you will be overrun by Asians! Only New Zealand first can save you from becoming a minority in your own country! Oh, wait..."

This has got to be the biggest non-issue of the year, seriously....

Indeed. I sometimes mock-salute friends or colleagues. That doesn't mean I defer to them.

well ireland also knows its place their prime minister comes over every year and presents the US with a bowl of shamrocks every Saint Patrick's day.

I'm pretty sure that the N.Irish top assembly ministers spent more of their time in the U.S, then they do in N.Ireland and its probably something to do with the Titanic. Seriously guys, IT SANK, maybe we shouldnt be act like its our biggest technological acheivment. Doesnt exactly send out the right message. On the other hand maybe they haven't relaised that it did hit an iceberg, they are n.irish politicians after all.
