And I thought American fundies were bad...

Fourteen members of a Russian doomsday cult on Tuesday abandoned the remote underground bunker where they had been hiding for nearly half a year awaiting the end of the world.

The local chief negotiator said 14 cult members who remained underground would spend the night in the bunker praying for a sign from God that it was time for them to come out.

"They understand this is a chance the Lord is giving them," said Oleg Melnichenko, deputy governor of the Penza region where cult members have been holed up since October.

This has nothing to do with religion. It's paranoia. Sometimes people attach paranoia to a religion in an attempt to justify it, but that doesn't mean religion has anything to do with it. There is no religion that encourages hiding in a cave. It's difficult to explain that kind of gap on your resume.

Read the article, weird religious interpretation by unstable, stupid people is what caused this.
Am I saying that all religions (or even many/some) promote this?
No I am not.

And a few others. I read a similar story from Kenya last year.

That being said, I don't actually blame religion for this, it wholly the pure stupidity of these people.

ah yes i've heard of this before in October i think, now some of the group left because of fear of flooding and collapse ironically.
"oh no the world is going to end!"
"Hey! i don't want to die before doomsday!"
it really is amusing, i think their programmed date for destruction is sometime in the summer i think. not a bad time for the world to end eh?
:)
silly people, one day they'l learn.

I think I read that their original world-ending date was earlier in the year. I'm never sure how that getting the date wrong doesn't discredit the cult leaders.

IIRC the Seventh Day Adventists got their start as a doomsday cult. At least TWO doomsdays went past in their early days and yet they somehow didn't collapse.

The Jehovah's Witnesses take the cake when it comes to doomsday prophecies. I think they had about 5 or so different dates early on in their history.

I actually came across a link to a site a while back with a fairly lengthy list of doomsday predictions. Absolutely hilarious to read about the ones that have been incorrect (all with a definite date have thus far).

The police found the leader of the cult trying to commit suicide by beating himself over the head with a log.

Which is nice.

True, it just seems to me to generally be worse when the anything is religion, or more specifically religious fanaticism.

Religion is a complex thing to understand and would make sense it spawns some serious consequences. Kind of like a toaster vs a car. Both mechanical objects but the complexity is much higher for a car. You put stupidity in that equation and you will get far worse results from a car. Toaster may shock the user but a car will kill others fairly easily.

Well, people do catch on eventually. Putting a definitive deadline on your prophecies is asking for trouble. The practice has more or less been abolished now.

I've wanted to do that sometimes. At work, usually. One idiot phone call too many...

I can't help laughing out loud at this. The leader is hitting himself over the head with logs while his followers are sending up prayers something like this (I imagine): "Oh, Lord, are we there yet? Can we go home now? Those other people left already, can we go too, please? Um...look, we're gonna go, okay? So...call us or something, k?"

I'd call the collapse of your bunker under the weight of melting snow a good enough God-sign to get the hell out of there.
