There's a demand for this?

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's health chiefs barred hospitals and clinics on Wednesday from castrating would-be "ladyboys" amid growing concern about the operation being seen as a cheap and quick alternative to a full sex-change.

Melbourne Victory recently played a game in Thailand, the whole lead-up was the supporters making jokes about ladyboys. And how Sydney FC are ladyboys.

Erm, yes? if you don't want to have to keep spending money on anti-androgens, and want to stop testosterone affecting your system, but can't afford the whole SRS, I can see why this would be an attractive option.

Yes there's a market for it. No matter what it is, it's someone's fetish.

ROFL! How can that country be concerned about a thing like cosmetic castration? It's laughable.:D

i find it disturbing that they emphasize the not wanting to encourage "ladyboys" as if there are other legitimate customers out there for cosmetic castration.

the whole issue is too complicated for me to think through. poverty, prostitution, personal choice, personal happiness, medical safety, the costs for better treatments--its a mine field.

So you noticed that too...

Don't forget discrimination based on gender/transgender and sexual orientation, too.

However, at the lower end of the market, clinics have responded to demand from teenage boys to look more like girls by posting Internet advertisements offering castration for as little as 4,000 baht ($125).

This is what concerns me and why I think the Thai government should try to stop this from being so easy to do. Teenagers shouldn't be making such decisions at all and most certainly not without the mental evaluation that goes with sex-change surgery.

Freedom of choice. No one has jurisdiction over another's body. If someone wants to mangle their own worthless body, then that's their itch to scratch.

Agreed, it just seems really odd to me...

Thailand is one of the only countries with a centuries old tradition of transvestites. This is the kind of shinfo you learn from reading wikipedia all day.
