What's your favorite webcomic, still running or not?

I say Yahtzee takes on the world *Sheds single tear for lost webcomic* is the best webcomic EVER! That and I repledge my hate towards Alt-Control-Delete.

I am ashamed to admit, I do enjoy xkcd. Actually, there are three levels of shame:

The shame I get from reading the comic
The shame when I don't understand some esoteric allusion to mathematics or science
The shame I get when I do understand it

Odd comic.

Like get syndicated. PBF is in the Guardian now, and it’s seriously slowed down the updates on the site. Still, it’s an ace (web)comic.

As to my favourites, obviously the usual suspects are there (Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/), xkcd (http://www.xkcd.com/)), but I’m quite partial to a bit of Beaver and Steve (http://www.beaverandsteve.com/), Wondermark (http://wondermark.com/d/394.html) and White Ninja (http://www.whiteninjacomics.com/comics.shtml).

However, Warren Ellis (of Transmetropolitan fame, comics fans) is doing a webcomic called Freak Angels (http://www.freakangels.com/?p=23) which is shaping out quite nicely. Could be the best thing to hit the webcomic scene in a long time.

In fact, I've come to realize that most of the webcomics I used to read are garbage. PBF and Penny Arcade are among the few decent ones.

well i don't really have a one favorite. there's a whole bunch of them that i've seen that i like. some are by people i've met and i like and some are by people i've never heard of and probably never will.

i can't remember the names of very many of them either. i know there's a couple of mega sites that host, each of them, several of the ones i like.

generally those that i do, have either a furry, sf, or fantasy theme of some kind, but then, i would hazard a guess that probably describes most of them.

gene catlow, kit-n-kay boodle, freefall, but like i say, those aren't even neccessarily my favorites, just the first, and those just barely, names that come to mind, oh of course there's ozzy and millie, and sabrina on line and vg cats and ...

yet i wouldn't call any of them my favorites exactly, and it's hardly ever that i even think of them. there arn't any that i fallow all the time.

i just every once in a while stumble accross a reference to one of them and remember, oh yah, i remember that one, i wonder what's going on there now, and then maybe go and check it out.

but even that doesn't reall happen very often.

so i mean, its yes i know there there and i like quite a few of them, but there arn't any in particular i actually fallow.

CAD is basically the worst thing ever. Tim Buckley is a massive prick with a huge ego and no talent. Go to your favorite search engine, type in "Tim Buckley sucks" or something similar and find out for yourself.Patently untrue. CAD is nowhere near the level Lightbringer is, and Lightbringer (http://lightbringer.comicgenesis.com/) is smashtastic compared to some of the crap I've seen elsewhere (which will not be named, because publicity and scorn is all those guys want).
Tim Buckley gets singled out because he copy/pastes a lot, runs a gamer comic, is a mediocre writer, and makes a living off of it. He's not the worst out there by a long shot.

Anyway, I read the following:

Elf Only Inn (http://www.elfonlyinn.net) (often goes on hiatus unannounced)
Darken (http://www.darkencomic.com) (a comic about an Evil D&D party)
Reckless Youth (http://recklessyouth.comicgen.com) (about a guy that's the new Messiah)
The Perry Bible Fellowship (http://pbfcomics.com/) (usually hilarious)
Ctrl+Alt+Del (http://www.cad-comic.com) (I read it because I can relate)
Tales of the Travelling Gnome (http://ttg.comicgenesis.com) (fantastic art, but updates on a monthly basis)
The Prime of Ambition (http://jaadrih.comicgenesis.com) (fantastic art when it gets done)
Tales of Pylea (http://talesofpylea.com/) (a rather nifty, disneyesque style)
Parallel Dementia (http://pd.milkinthepantry.com) (a well-written and well-illustrated comic about evil creatures and the people that kill them)
The Zombie Hunters (http://www.thezombiehunters.com) (a pretty fantastic Zombie Comic that now features a jerk that looks almost exactly like I do...)
Dead Winter (http://www.deadwinter.cc) (an unconventionally styled Zombie Comic)
Legostar Galactica (http://legostargalactica.comicgen.com) (currently on hiatus)
and The Curious Adventures of Aldus Maycombe (http://aldus.comicgen.com/) (when it updates, that is...)

Okay, here's something that happened a few years ago.

A fan of his gets the idea to do some kind of live action CAD fan film, because he loves CAD so damn much. He gets some pals of his to play along, and they dress up as Ethan and Lucas and generally goof off in front of a camera. He posts it on the CAD forums, thinking that maybe Buckley will get a kick out of it.

Tim Buckley threatens the poor kid with legal action.

There's also that more recent business with him sending pictures of his penis to some 14 year old girl. Go to the CAD forums; last time I checked, there's this banner at the top where Ethan says "Welcome to the forums. Play nice or we'll kill you," or something to that effect. That was put in place around the time the penis news got out, and mass bannings ensued. I'm pretty sure that in order to join their forums now, you need approval from two moderators. Criticism of Buckley's work, no matter how mild, often results in a quick ban.

Go ahead and look this up if you want; I'm pretty sure I got most of the details right.

Well, I'm no expert on copyright law, but from what I know, I'm pretty sure that the fan film falls under fair use. Now if the kid had intended to make some money with it, Buckley's reaction would be justified.

Can you point me to a reliable source? All I've found so far could easily be urban myth. It sounds like good reasons to hate him, but then again, it sounds like things made up about him by people that can't stand him.
If the allegations prove true, though, I may change my opinion on him.

Yeah, you have a point; once the internet gets a hold of something, the truth can get hard to find. Plus, I'm a little hesitant to do a search for "Tim Buckley's penis" for obvious reasons. Yes, I've unfortunately seen a picture of the alleged penis, and no, I'm not going to link it here. It might take me some time to find a reliable source, but I'll try. Depends on your definition of "reliable", I guess.

I actually used to read CAD now and then, because I had nothing better to do, and it was amusing sometimes. I stopped, however, when I realized that Buckley is a huge tool.

I read Rob and Elliot for a while, since Clay was doing the awesome guest-Sluggy's. Started reading Clay's Cosmobear, too. But turned out the guys on his forum were stuck-up assholes, and Cosmobear was going nowhere fast. Rob and Elliot got old after a while, too. Still gotta give Clay credit for Bikini Suicide Frisbee Days on Sluggy, though. Best guest artist yet.He was probably the best guest artist Sluggy ever had. I'm sad to see him go after all those Saturdays...maybe he'll come back in the future...

Well...as for webcomic forums, I think the best one to browse out there would be Penny Arcade's. It seems to be a relatively relaxed place where one can discuss anything and everything they like. As opposed to the one for CAD, which is regulated to the point where the slightest mistake can cause one to be banned for days. It makes Catholic Mass look more like 4chan in comparison.

Hrm...the only other webcomic forum I like would be the one for Dominic Deegan (http://www.dominic-deegan.com/). The comic itself is god awful, but the forums make up for it with the insults and criticism.

I love the Sluggy forums. Mr. Jest is the coolest guy ever.

Except for when it's an Oasis story arch. Then shit gets crazy.

Dominic Deegan is way better if you pretend that everything that happens in it is the universe reacting to him being a gigantic asshole.

Surprised no one has mentioned schlock mercenary which is a pretty funny scifi comic. The artist hasn't missed an update in like 7 years as well.

Well, I'm no expert on copyright law, but from what I know, I'm pretty sure that the fan film falls under fair use. Now if the kid had intended to make some money with it, Buckley's reaction would be justified.Depends on the quality of the film. If I recall correctly, the fanmade fictional trailer for "Dick Grayson" made DC put a moratorium on fan-films.

But he doesn't have one. Allegedly, at least. :pYeah, people really hate Buckley. Now the question is do they hate him for the bad things they say he did or do they say he did the bad things because they hate him? Urban dictionary and forum posts aren't exactly what I'll use to base a final judgement on, and so far that's all I've found.

Darken (http://www.darkencomic.com/)Kate nearly broke my heart with the whole treatment of the bear and when she told me he'd stay dead... =(
Then he got to go to heaven. In color! =D

Something fans of Fans may not know . . .

He's actually started writing more! Until someone told me I could find the old ones still online I thought he had stopped writing the comic. Haven't gotten to the new stuff yet, still reading my way through the classics.

Schlock Mercenary is my fave, I've been reading it for years and have never got bored of it.

I also read Order of the Stick, Looking for Group, PVP, Cyanide and Happiness and 8-bit Theatre.

I used to read RPGWorld Comic and Men in Hats while they were still going.

And the back page of the books note that since it's an American manga, you read properly. I'm failing to see why this is an issue. If you don't like MT (because of style, or writing, or whatever) that's fine, but why rip on it 'cause it's American?

I'm not ripping on it for being American. I'm pointing out that if it's a manga, every other comic ever is, as well.

So to you country of origin is more important than the clear stylistic differences between typical American comics art and typical Japanese comics art? Are you strict enough that even the Korean stuff doesn't count as Manga?

I find the concept of typical American or Japanese comic art to be highly amusing. Why? Stereotypes make life easier. Especially breaking with stereotypes. That would be impossible without preconceived notions.
