I'm curious to see NSG's racial makeup, and also interested to see what people think about race. Is it only a social construct? How important is race where you live?

I don't consider race to be important. I like to think everyone is equally worthless in an infinite universe our input is insignificant, so i don't see why any higher being would take preference to humans over the billions of other planets out there. Apologies for talking about religion.

Well, I am ethnically German, Irish, Scottish, English, French, and a bunch of Cherokee.

I usually, however, consider myself Caucasian since that's what I generally look like, though I have had some people call me an American Indian.

One can trace my heritage back 60,000 years to a man living in Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y-chromosomal_Adam). Thus, I claim African ancestry.

Of course, even a picture of the sun makes me break out in blisters, but skin color is overrated anyway.

My mother's side is all Italian, though her father has a wee bit of 'Moro' blood. My Father's side is classic Aussie, with his mother hailing from english first fleeter stock, and his father hailing from Scotland a few generations back.

My wife is Malaysian chinese, with the father's side being Hokkien Chinese from penang, and her Mother's side being Cantonese Chinese from KL.

So if we have a kid it'll be Scottish, English, Italian, Chinese (Han) and will likely speak Italian, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, as well as holding Australian and European dual citizenship.

I meant ethnicity. And I realize that biologically, it is about equivalent to height, not too huge. However, there have not been height riots. People have not been prevented from voting because they are short. But they have been killed, ostracized, and discriminated against because of ethnicity. Socially, it has been very important through history.

I am Western European and Native, but I generally answer to "white", if only because it's actually a fairly apt description--I am one of the paler people I know. My mother and grandmother both turn dark, but apparently the Native blood is weak in me.

My boyfriend (who is black, Mexican, native and Irish) once asked his dad what he should say when people asked him what he was. His dad's answer is the one he still uses today--"Tell them you're from Oakland."

That's the thing, race, as generally defined by the layman, doesn't exist biologically. Ethnicity is a cultural concept. Height is biological, not cultural.

Seeing as race is a biological concept (it's the taxon following species), and seeing as Homo sapiens sapiens or Homo sapiens idaltu are the only known races of humans, you'd have to be one race or the other. And seeing as idaltu are, well, supposed to be extinct, one would assume that the posters of NSG are Homo sapiens sapiens.

Nope, trinomens refer to race (AKA subspecies). Binomials are used for species.

Our genus is Homo, our species is Homo sapiens, and our race is Homo sapiens sapiens.


As far as what you were taught in anthro, the American Anthropological Association Statement on "Race" (http://www.aaanet.org/stmts/racepp.htm), recognised "race" as a meaningless "social construct" without biological validity ten years ago. Those classifications are invalid.

If people ask me, I answer "white", because that is just about the only thing I'm somewhat sure of.

Other. Northeastern European Mountain Speckled Flatfoot breed, to be exact. My wife, however, is of the Southern Indoeuropean Blackmane variety so our children have very long racial descriptions and that might be a problem in school when the trainers have to decide where to seat them.

I will create a Military Special Forces unit dedicated to pranks. They will search out enemies both foreign and domestic(or whoever I feel needs some attention), sneak in where least expected, and saran wrap toilets, fill shoes with shaving cream, glue objects and/or people together in odd and possibly lewd positions and set up remotely launched pie cannons in strategic locations. Then they will disappear like shadows. :)

I've got background from different ones (that I know of), so I don't think I can really answer the question.

White with traces of Cherokee. As for nationality, I'm a bit of several things - Danish, Irish, German, English...primarily English, since my family name is from England.

The only thing is, while I have Irish blood, I don't consider myself Irish. Therefore, St. Patrick's Day sucks for me, and it's too damn bad the Nazis ruined being German, because it'd be fun to have a day to eat bratwurst.

No Oktobefests where you live? :( I don't have much, if any German heritage, other than having grown up in Texas, where German/Czech heritage is still celebrated. A beer garden at Oktoberfest is a wonderful thing, even if it's in New Braunfels not Munich. (Note - I have friends who are third and fourth gen. Texas-German, and grew up speaking German at home...)

I consider myself "other", as even though I'm mostly Scotch-Irish, I've got a significant amount of Native American genes. My great gandmother was 100% Blackhawk, and my great grandfather was partially Cherokee and Chickasaw, but mostly German and French (this was on my grandmother's side --- think 60% German, 15% French, 15% Cherokee, and 10% Chickasaw). My grandfather's side was mostly Scotch-Irish. And then there's my mom's side of the family, which is Irish-English (Watsons and Staffords). And there's apparently some Scandinavian relatives from a long ways back, though I haven't checked the tree to see if this is true or not. I'm guessing it is, but who knows.

Overall, I'm mostly Northern European. Mostly. But I think there's enough of everything else to justify registering in this thread as "Other".

(Note - I have friends who are third and fourth gen. Texas-German, and grew up speaking German at home...)
