How do you take your coffee?

I'm tired of all the religious threads on NSG right now so I thought we should turn our attention to something much more important, namely coffee.

So that's the question, what's the best way to drink this heavenly drink, the finest organic suspension ever devised, the only way to wake up properly?

For me, I usually take mine with enough cream and sugar to make it more of a liquid candy bar, though I have gotten addicted to a Japanese drink called winna cohi (Vienna Coffee) a black coffee with thick whipped cream on top.

Poll a coming.

At an Italian restaurant -- cappuccino, or as above.
In summer: As above, iced.

Decaf, as I have medical issues preventing me from drinking caffeine, and con panna style - shots of espresso with whip cream on top.

Yummy. :)

Edit: Though with further consideration, I'm also a huge, huge fan of decaf super dense-foam dry cappuccinos. (I'm talking silky, creamy, near-sexual-gratification beautiful foam. Yes, I have a rather unnatural obsession with beautiful foam. I'm telling you, I can steam milk like it's nobody's business.)

I love black coffee but my stomach can't really take it any more, particularly before food which is the best cup of the day.

So I have a little milk or cream unless it's a really special roast and I'm willing to suffer stomach pangs for the taste.

Sugar is not nice, makes the coffee taste more like a hot chocolate or something. Yuck.

Hey, my dad drinks it that way. People look at him like he's crazy. Complete strangers interrupt with "hey, stop stop, you know that's the salt, right?"

It tastes all right, I just don't like it enough to make eating more salt worthwhile.

Yes indeed! Much the same as with quality food ingredients, taste a bit on it's own before deciding on the seasoning. If it tastes really crap you can save ruining a whole meal by tasting it first.

I've been known to refuse coffee (instant coffee usually, but sometimes ground, the beans can get wet and ferment before roasting, and you can taste that) even when it is served to me in a social context and I cause offence. I ask for tea instead ...

Black coffee tastes like warmed-over shit.

Either it's crap coffee ... or you don't really like coffee.

'Nuff said.

Not really. Coffee contains a drug and your taste is conditioned to like whatever gives you the hit. You could drink liquified, pasteurized faeces ... and if it had a decent dose of caffeine in it, you'd get to like the taste. Well, it would take a while, what with the smell and everything.

Hey, how do you know what shit tastes like anyway? Did you lose a dare or something? :p
No-Bugs Ho-Bot
30-03-2008, 11:34
White with two sugars. I prefer tea though however.

Tea is good.

I've never liked tea without milk ... I'm thinking now, that could be because I haven't lived without milk, while being an exclusive tea drinker, for long enough to get used to it.

From what I hear tea connoisseurs say, it's an insult to fine tea to put milk in it. That makes sense now ... tea has a much more delicate taste than coffee. If I find it insulting to good coffee to put milk or sugar in it ... then for tea this should go double.

It's no big deal, I guess. Caffeine is an excellent drug which helps with concentration, it's plain useful, and if we can still indulge in such a simple pleasure without being blood-tested and criminalized, then who cares what brand is best or if it's OK to put salt in it?

Generally from behind the barrel of a .38 Magnum. While I haven't noticed an increase in coffee prices, I have been tipping more for the dismal working conditions in which the baristas and such slave away. Everytime I go for a cup their hands are shaking and they look so worried it's most pitiable.

I feel the need to add a personal anecdote that I will no doubt be telling my grandchildren.

So, I walk into a Starbucks or your country's coffee equivalent, and the following conversation ensues.

Barista: What will you be having?
Me: Well, I like my coffee like I like my women...
Barista: So?
Me: Looking at you it'll take about a half-cup of milk and some breast implants.

Filtered (french press, steel not paper), or neapolitan, or espresso. Less often moka or turkish.
Exceptionally a viennoise (sour cream within, whipped cream above, and powdered bitter cocoa), or a caffè corretto (with grappa), or an irish coffee.

Lots of sugar.

some people seem to like it intravienously.

personally i only care for it that much as a flavoring for chocklet. something to kill the excessive sweetness of the forms its usually available in.

so i'm with the mochaccino crowd on this one.

of course there's coffee and there's coffee, just like there's tea and there's tea and so on.

now there are coffees, varietle NOT flavoured, that CAN stand on their own, the deep rich full bodies ones, like harrare, not those damd acidy ones, like so called 'french roast.

but i still prefer them with chocklet, NOT white sugar or those plastic pseudo sugars. flavorings are alright too of course. i like to put a little cinnimon in the grinder when i grind my beans. i tried putting coacoa in the grind but it clogs the filters too much.

but grinding a hazlenut flavoured harrare with cinnimon, esspressoing it, i.e. pumping steam through it, and then adding that to the chocklet, with of course a little moo juice, oh and a satiei of mint in the final cup.

yes of course that's a desert coffee, but that's really pretty much what i like it for. i'm not really a consumer of mass quantities of the stuff otherwise.

Anyway, an affogato, at least here, means: take ice-cream (vanilla or torroncino or coffee) and pour hot espresso over it. Not the reverse. And here it's seen as a sort of gelato (ice-cream), not a sort of coffee...

Actually, the idea is that by pouring the coffee over the ice cream, the ice cream melts from the top, and mixes with the coffe; instead than forming a sort of shrinking icecreamberg in a sea of cold espresso.

Anyway, it has never been one of my favourites, neither as coffee nor as ice cream.
