I know we have a political mega thread at the moment. In fact it will be with us for the next year. I don't disagree with placing all the election type discussion in there. However why do we not have mega threads for other subjects such as Global Warming/Change/Cooling or maybe an uber gay thread? Can't forget the Christian, Islam uber threads. So why don't we have subcategories within general to help clean up things?

...because General is the least relevant aspect of NationStates - I think there's an explanation somewhere that Max Barry just wanted a General message board for people, it was an arbitrary want.

Of course, for some, it's the only aspect of NationStates but that's by the by.

It's the only aspect I use. Could care less about role playing. I just am trying to figure out why some things get uber status when others don't.

Those discussions recycle and different arguments are made, approaches taken, etc. While they often spin their wheels in the same deep trenches they do tend to evolve a bit.

The problem with the US election is two fold, first, it's just the US, and while we make the most noise, we're not the only ones here.

Second, as it's an evolving story as the Democratic primary drags on threads were popping up all over the front page that were essentially the same, sometimes the exact same subject.

When that happens to other subjects they are merged, if two threads pop up on the same article or event, they're merged. It was decided that because of thread pollution and because people kept making new threads that were really just continuations of the same argument it was all merged together.

It's not so much about threads repeating as it was about the same threads repeating and hogging up space on the front page.

Anecdote threads and Sumamba Buwhan's republican thread FTW.

As far as I see it, 'uber' threads are just big threads of 4 people yelling at each other without actually making any further contribution to the thread that wasn't made in the first 2 pages...

(as a side note, I think that's the first time I've ever used that phrase...I have yet to do so in a serious discussion though)

General subforums, eh (or their variance thereof)? Nice idea, but I think it ruins the community a little- the variety gives the forum a cosmopolitan feel, plus it encourages readers to "branch out". If we "separate" discussion people will just stick to the discussions they only want to deal with and maybe not explore other interesting topics they may not have thought of, but if we keep all topics on the same level it might at least entice that exploring, which is what is most appealing about NSG. :)

megathreads sound ok to me, though often different threads on the same topic (eg american election or religion) will be raising different themes within those topics.

what you mean, like actually have a specific thread for different areas of politics?
nooooo that's farr to sensible, besides most threads are full of random crap, i like to make my random crap confusing too, but that's just a personal touch.

So yeah it makes sense, but then you get confusing debate about religion and considering the number of posters in them and jolts capability to take in this new change, it's doubtfull it would work, in an ideal world yes, maybe one day yes, but not today.
