Depends on how long you count living. If we say it's where one calls home, then the answer is 10 time zones. Otherwise, it's only 5.

Never more than 30 miles.

I never lived in the city of my birth, Ocala. I lived in Inverness, Florida (40 or so miles away from Ocala) until I was about 8 and I've lived around Bradenton, Florida since then, and that's about 130 or so miles away from Ocala. When I go to USF next year I'll be somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 miles from Ocala. These distances are all using the google maps thing, so I don't know how accurate that is. I know that it usually takes about an hour or so to get to Tampa from Bradenton and about two hours to get to Inverness from Bradenton and an hour to get from Tampa to Inverness.

However far North Carolina is from Massachusetts. And after having done so, I doubt I'll ever willingly live more than 100 miles from home again. Because that's the thing. I may have lived far away from my birthplace, but my home has never been that far away.

I was born in Alexandria, VA and the Peace Corps is sending me to live somewhere in Africa late this year. At that point it will be anywhere from 3,500 to 8,500 miles depending on which country.

The farthest I've traveled so far is Osaka, Japan at about 6,800 miles though.

Any idea where in Africa? The only solid information they have given me is that it will be in non-francophone Africa which limits the countries a bit. Still waiting on the invite; so far it's been the longest part of the process.

opposite side of a continent. parents moved away from thier parents when i was three. did spend 40 of my 60 years in the general area they settled down in about a year after we got out here. an area about 200 miles ne/sw by about 50 nw/se. comprising mostly placer county and a portion of nevada county in california.

i don't know the actualy distance in miles from buffalo new york where i was born, to truckee california where i started kindergarten.

i did live ten years up in oregon though, from 77 to 87, and spent a handful of odd years out of the area elsewhere. a year in seattle (73/74), a couple in utah and mississippi courstesy of uncle sugar (68-71) and the three before they moved out here (1948-1951).

Cool. What were you doing there?I was volunteering with a charity called VSO (Volunteer Service Overseas). I was wroking in local schools helping to teach English. It was quite a large programme. I was there with 8 other people from the UK, and 9 from Uzbekistan. We worked in pairs around the city in different places. We also helped prompt the city council to place rubbish bins around the city and collect from them regularly to reduce problems with rubbish in the area. Plus we organised a sports day for an orphanage and redecorated and repaired a playground in a young disabled children's orphanage. It was a lot of fun, and then we all went to the UK and did similar things in the city of Bradford (a deprived area of the UK).

I was born in Alexandria, VA and the Peace Corps is sending me to live somewhere in Africa late this year. At that point it will be anywhere from 3,500 to 8,500 miles depending on which country.

The farthest I've traveled so far is Osaka, Japan at about 6,800 miles though.Cool, we met quite a few people volunteering with the Peace Corps when in Uzbekistan. We even helped a woman called Megan help decorate the new clinic she was going to be working in. You should have a lot of fund volunteering with the Peace Corps. I wish you the best of luck! :)

Unfortunately, neither VSO nor the Peace Corps operate in Uzbekistan any more. We went there the year of the Andijan riots. The president got paranoid that NGOs were sent by foreign governments to topple him and banned them from operating in the country. :(

And I disagree with that. That might be the case in certain areas where there is roughly the same culture(ie. speaking the same language, same political and economical situation), but when I go 2 hours by train (120 km) from here, I'm in an area which has quite a different culture (French speaking Belgium).

That's a shame about the pull out from Uzbekistan. That is a constant concern of the Peace Corps. Certain people believe the CIA runs it.

For part of a Summer I did an school exchange thing a few thousand klicks from my birthplace, on a different continent, so I consider myself to have lived there. Legally, however, I was still residing with my parents. Outside of that, my family lives several hundred kilometres from where I was born, although I currently live somewhat closer, in a different city.

My parents were away visiting relatives when I arrived (I was a few weeks early), so I think it is interesting that I have never resided within a hundred klicks of where I was born.
