Do You LibraryThing?

Hey, if "Facebook" and "Google" are verbs...

The site is this (http://www.librarything.com). Basically, it catalogs your books and offers suggestions, along with a social networking component that is not mandatory (thankfully).
So, does anyone use this? If so, what is your library?

It seems interesting, but I generally don't need advice on books to read, I just go to the library and almost always find something interesting. If it isn't as interesting as I suspected I just stop reading and bring it back. Mainly I just go over the suggestions or read books that were named in a previous book I read or by the same author or in the same series of books.

in short: interesting, but needless.

I also figure the Internet provides all the comparison and reading I'll ever need to do as well. Not only that but doesn't Amazon provide "suggested readings" and things like that?

I have two shelves overflowing with books... with more of my books taking up half of my husband's shelf, on which he only has enough books to fill two shelves, plus two or three boxes...

So, any chance to brag about my paperback collection is welcomed... (and this is considering I trimmed it by a good 200 books before I moved to Toronto...)

I'd take a picture of my bookshelf, but most of the books are now in boxes because I'm moving house. Nonetheless, before they were packed, books took up a wall of my living room, plus most of the opposite wall, two shelves in my bedroom, and an awful lot I still keep on my desk in case I should ever use them. So there. :P

(Of course, in comparison to some people I know -- one elderly couple's house, which would fit my house in its basement, has several bookcases' worth in just about every room as well as the hallways -- that's a paltry amount; and I haven't read half of them either; but I couldn't resist a little oneupmanship. <.<)

Wow, I meet someone with more books than me. I did a quick count and found I have 150 or so. I keep seeing extra ones that aren't on the bookshelf, but have been placed elsewhere.

I found the site nice, if only because on the front page I found a book called 'Programming Ruby'. I'd assumed it might be a sci-fi book, but it was actually a guide on how to use the programming language Ruby. And the language itself look interesting, so I wasn't that disappointed.

You mean the Pragmatic Programmers one? It's a good book.

Anyway, 150 books is for wimps. Let me go do some counting... Oh, I can't be bothered. At a conservative estimate, there are 1850 or so books in my house. That's probably an undercount.

Just to hijack for a moment, I just got myself a copy of "The Conquest of Bread". 1906 hardback edition, baby. It's wonderful. Has the pencil notes the previous owner made in it, and a newspaper clipping from back then with a review of the book tucked into the front cover. Truly a delightful volume. And for only six quid.

My reading-list is growing faster than I'm reading it. So I don't think I need further recommendations ... but I'll try LibraryThing out.

I don't understand those who keep every book they ever wred. I decide when I finish or abandon a book if I'm ever likely to read it again (or try again) and if so I keep it. Otherwise, I try to find someone who might want to read it. I've found that if you give people books, they give you books. There's no need to arrange a formal swap.

I used to sell the books I wasn't going to keep, but the dollar or two a shop gives makes that not really worthwhile unless you take in a boxful. The crappier books I drop off at my local station, where there's a collection for people to help themselves to.

That sucks... it seems to be capped at 200 books for a free account... :( and I haven't yet begun to really add books to it yet.

I've only been in my current house two years and I'll be moving again in a couple of months.

Still, I think 150+ books is a decent sized collection for a 22-year-old. :p

Here's my own list I'm working on. The oldest book I have is a psychology book on panic from 1940. It looks into the mass hysteria caused by 'The Invasion from Mars' broadcast by Orson Welles.

I was browsing my catalogue and I have 9 books that no one else on the site has. Well 8 really, I think the entry for my Wind in the Willows book is a bit messed up. But damnit, I was trying to get the exact books that I had, not just the right title and author.

Sorry, I didn't mention this: after 200, you have to pay for it. I think it's $10 per year, or $25 for life. Not too expensive, but still, it costs more than nothing.

That sounds very interesting. The oldest book in the house that I know of is an 1850 copy of Pilgrim's Progress. Wonderful leather cover and everything.
