Thats right Herb Peterson the inventor of the Egg McMuffin died today at the age of 89, he also came up with Mcdonalds first advertising slogan "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day,"

I have always enjoyed eating Egg McMuffin burgers and have made this thread as homage to him.

So I ask other NSG posters, what do you or don't you like about Egg McMuffins or any other Mcdonalds product.

When I must drive, I have an Egg Mcmuffin extra value meal with OJ instead of coffee -- good for on the go.

When I am home, I toast my own muffin, poach an egg in the microwave, slap a piece of ham and a piece of American cheese cheese on it and microwave just till the cheese melts. Good times.

My feelings on McDonald's food change based on how close I am to it; it's very odd. Here is the average itinerary of my emotions:
In McDonald's waiting for food: Disgust
Eating McDonald's food: Pleasure
Leaving McDonald's while digesting food: Disgust, combined with some pain

I hardly eat at McDonald's anymore since it made me sick last year...and the morning after I got sick from it, my damn wife insisted on going to McDonald's the next day. Argfa. Bleh.

Aside from that, the McGriddle is quite possibly a perfect food, at least with sausage. I never cared for English muffins, so the McMuffin is out. But the sausage biscuit? Also good.

However, McDonald's breakfast is weak compared to the goodness that is Burger King breakfast.

Egg McMuffins were invented? All this time I'd believed their creation was an organic process that couldn't be attributed to any one person, like fire or the wheel.
I respect McDonald's for their market saturation, cultural impact and global success, but I despise them for having incredibly annoying commercials. If I ever meet the guy who does the voice of the Parfait, I will beat him to death with a sock full of pennies.

Most inventions are, but in America we believe in inventors and heroes. Edison did not invent the light bulb. The Wright Brothers did not invent the airplane. James Watt did not invent the steam engine.

These people made improvements to existing technologies and made them marketable. But the "invention" was built by generations.

i dont get why people think inherently Mcdonalds is bad food. The egg on a McMuffin is the exact same egg that you buy in any grocery store. The muffin part is the exact same muffin you can buy in any store. The meat they use in the hamburgers is the exact same meat you buy yourself in any grocery store. The lettuce, tomatoes, onions catsup, mustard, all exactly the same. They are taking the exact ingredients and putting them into a pile in the same way you would if you made the same meal at home. So why is one considered healthy and the other a bad for you fast food? I dont get it.

Beef is not always just beef but in this case it is. The hamburger meat supplied to McDonalds is identical to the hamburger beef provided to grocery stores. In fact they often come from the same slaughterhouses even. The % of fat mixed into the hamburger may or may not differ but its the same meat. The rolls you eat from McDonalds are not significantly different then rolls you buy in a grocery store. And absolutly egg is egg is egg. The egg comes out of a chickens ass and either they ship it to McDonalds or they ship it to a grocery store.

A lot. The quality of meat at McDonalds is embarressing, if indeed it is a genuine cut of meat as opposed to liquidised trotters, hoofs or what you will. The eggs, I have no doubt, are battery eggs from the worst, cheapest sort of farms.

You also fail to consider the processes by which the food is manufactured. Put lightly, they're unhealthy.

In terms of national production of hamburger grade meat, beef is beef is beef is beef is beef is beef. There are actually a relativly small number of beef processors in the US and they operate on massive and sheer scale. There simply isnt any reason to use old and sick cows simply because they are such huge consumers of beef and any even minor problems cost the company tens of millions of dollars in recalls and bad press. Its simply in thier own best interest to insure that hamburgers have the same quality beef as what gets ground up and sent to grocery stores.
Im sure the eggs come from battery eggs from the cheapest sorts of farms, but the eggs in your grocery stores probably came from the exact same place so i dont see how McDonalds is "worse" then if you made same meal at home from eggs from store.

Because for the most part it isn't, you can not live on fast food and expect to stay within a range of good health. There was a good documentary about McDonald’s food that came out a few years called "Super Size Me". For better understanding on why fast food is not "healthy" I would advise you to either watch that film or some other that might have come out that talks about Fast Food or consult your doctor.

The ingredients you can buy in the store are not always the same that are used in the Egg McMuffin or any fast food for that matter. Though in recent years, the fast food companies have been getting better about using (more healthy) ingredients, but for the most part you better off going to a store and buying the ingredients yourself at it's usually better and here's why.

The Egg: While, that may be true it also depends on what type of egg they use. Their's White eggs, brown eggs and then egg duratives. You'll have to forgive my ignorance, but I have no idea what McDonald’s uses for sure. However, I'm sure if you asked them they would let you know. I'm assuming though for the sake of argument that they use the standard white eggs.

The Muffin: While, you can probably buy the exact same type of Muffin or something similar in a supermarket. You can also buy other types such as say Whole Grain or Rye or whatever Supermarkets have on their shelves. Some are more nutritious then others.

The Meat: This is where you are flat out wrong. It's recorded fact, though it should be noted that fast food companies are getting better about this fact, that the meat they use is usually the cheapest part of the cow[Shank, Flank, Round, Chuck so on] vs the prime cuts such as Rib and Sirloin. The same applies to Chickens though not as much as it used to. The meat you can buy in the store is usually of better quality hence why it costs more, though you can also buy the cheaper parts of the cow and chickens if you so desired so in that respect your correct.

The Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Ketchup(catsup), mustard: Yes and no, theirs different kinds of Lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mustard available. You can buy what fast food places use or you could something buy more to your liking.

In closing, the most obvious difference between eating fast food and making and eating at home is the way it's cooked. It's not called Fast Food for nothing meaning their cooking it with the minimal amount of time required. At home, you usually cook it longer and this removes a lot of the fat, grease from the meat. The Fat/Grease is the mostly unhealthy part of the meat. It also happens to be what gives the meat most of it's flavor.

*If, I missed anything or got something wrong, feel free to correct me as it's been awhile since I read up on the fast food industry.

Np, if I could shed light on the internal marketing practices of McD's I would have. Some things I can tell you for sure though that I got from employees:

They use 5 pounds of sugar for 5 gallons of sweet tea.

They indeed do use REAL eggs; they got some kinda fancy eggy cooker thing that they put in the deep fryer, they break the egg into it, close it, and fry away. At least at Wendy's the eggs used to come pre-cooked in tube kinda like the Pillsbury biscuits that were pre sliced so you just broke part off.

The beef is of a lower grade but ultimatly the same as any reguler store beef, ground beef is made of the worst parts of the cow and mashed together, kinda like bologna to pigs and chickens.

My sister made it sound like its from the shell. They just break it out and put 'er in there. Most of the time they don't even bother to scramble it. But it seems to me that having pre-scrambled egg mix would be a better use of space (you can fit a dozen eggs into a craton with a much smaller volume that way)

The guy who did that movie was a complete dumb-ass, and his "documentary" proved nothing. It doesn't matter what you eat, if you regularly force feed yourself so that you take in 5000+ calories a day and don't exercise for a whole month, you will gain weight and develop health problems. Anyone who went through High School health class should know that.
