Think Differently

I just wanted to bring this to the attention of NS Gen. I don't know how much any of you know about autism, but sadly most people don't know enough. Autism affects millions of people worldwide, and the effect it can have on a person's life is massive. Unfortunately, because of the nature of the affliction, it's one of those things that tends to go unpublicised. I won't try to explain everything myself, because to be quite honest I don't know enough about it myself.
However, what I will try to do is raise a bit of awareness. There exists in the UK the National Autistic Society, who, as you may guess, are all about autism, and particularly trying to raise awareness of it in the public spectrum. Currently, one of the projects they are working on is trying to get the government to survey how many adults in the UK are affected by autism - strange, you might think, that it's such a widespread affliction, but we don't even know how many people have it.
Anyway, the website I'd like to spread around is this:
www.think-differently.org.uk
There's a button on there labelled 'take action'. If you could please do so I would be unbelieveably grateful. There are two things that would be amazing for you to do - you can email your MP, and you can sign their online petition.
Look around the site beforehand, learn a bit more about it. If you could then take action you're a wonderful person and I love you. This society is only based in England I'm afraid, so the take action bits will only work for those of you who live in England, but if you don't please don't just discard this. Find out more about it, and you'll see why this is such a big deal. As I said, autism is a worldwide issue, so if there's no Autistic Society in your country, maybe you could see about solving that problem (if you're feeling brave :) )
This will only take a few moments of your time - much less than it probably took to read all this blather, but if you could do it I for one would be most grateful, as would so many others. It's an easy way to make a difference. And better still, don't let it rest at that - spread the word. The more who know, the better.
Thanks :)

AUTISM EXISTS
I know, i see alot of goths who dress like leather-clad prostitute wannabes just to get attention - the worst ones are those that cut themsleves all emo-like
Trouble is, as much as there are the powers to help them, and the people to do it, alot of their type are so confined to their lives that they would possibly refuse to break out of their shells and live life
In case anyone's wondering, the Autism Society of America (http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer)would be the umbrella group for this issue in the US. That's my aunt and cousin hugging on the front page.

This has little or nothing to do with Autism.
Also, no one likes an emo. Not even him- or herself.

For some reason that sounds strangely ominous.

I believe in spreading awareness for autism. However, I strongly condemn that idea that it is a "disease" or "disorder", it's simply neurodiversity.
Aspies FTW!

I am slightly leery of Asperger's because there is a propensity to self-diagnose. I am not claiming anyone here is doing that, but it happens too often.
And now, more insensitivity!

As well it should. The Asperger's Conspiracy is watching you...

I agree with that to a point. My cousin, for example, is on the low-functioning end of the spectrum and can hardly speak. I would consider that a problem.

I completely agree - I deliberately avoided using disease, and even 'affliction' left a slightly sour taste in my mouth - unfotunately I couldn't come up with an appropriate term. Hence encouraging people to look around the site - they'll give the whole matter a much better word than I can.

I don't get where compassion for low level autism comes from. For my entire academic career, almost four times more money was spent on these 'people' than on the gifted program, and twice that which was spent on normal children. We are THROWING OUR MONEY AWAY! What will a low level autistic person contribute to our society that a thousand non-autistic children can also do? The money, labor and medical care devoted to these leeches could create a new generation of Einsteins, instead of shunning the gifted and breeding malase in the average. Instead, we pat ourselves on the back for being humane and hang another crappy grade on the fridge.
This is NOT a troll post, this is how I, a former gifted student, feel.

Asperger's is neither for the win, nor for the lose. It's just the way some people are.

Considering Einstein's academic history, some of his teachers probably felt the same way about him. That aside, I'm pretty sure there's something in our laws about fair and equal education and not shutting kids in a small room because they won't shut up and do their algebra.
This coming from a former GATE and ADD student. :)

Um...what? I've never met an autistic person who dressed like a leather-clad hooker and cut him/herself.
Also, self-injury has nothing to do with being emo. Cutters hate emo kids just as much as you do.

Yeah. It's a shame there's so little information about autism out there.
Maybe they should make a movie about it and have Tom Cruise star in it.

What you've said here is absurd and deceitful.
Everyone knows Xenu is already restrained in perpetuity.
Scientology's work is to clear the planet of the consequences of his past actions, there is no need to "stop" him from doing further damage.
Its fucking intolerant people like you that cause so many to lead miserable, reactionary lives due to the spirits of dead space aliens attached to their bodies.
You are bad and should feel bad about yourself.

Refusing responsibility is one of the defining characteristics of an SP.
The tech exists to free you from those body thetans. Its done everyday, all over the world.
Grow up and start taking responsibility for the solutions that YOU have refused to acknowledge and purchase for a reasonable fee and/or labor.
L. Ron Hubbard broke his arm and his back to get the knowledge that you make fun of.
Beck knows its true, and he is a skinny odd-looking man who gets to drill incredibly hot babes at will.

Great, you wretched, hateful bastard, now I'm dying of pneumonia.
Be advised that by taking action that callously endangers my life, you make yourself subject to tort action as afforded me by law.
Should the judge disagree, I'll simply alter MEST to cause his or her robe to suddenly contract around his or her crotch.

Dammit, now we're all going to die of "pneumonia".
And yes! I vow to take responsibility for not passing responsibility of my problems onto my thetans and for not responsibly removing them! How could I be so irresponsible!?
But only if I get to bang Katie Holmes.

Only a non-Scientologist would blame Katie instead of Van Der Beek, or, L Ron forbid, the show's producers.
RhynoD, playing football in West Canaan Texas may have been the high point of your life, but I don't want YOUR LIFE!
Only a non-Scientologist would blame Katie instead of Van Der Beek, or, L Ron forbid, the show's producers.
I blame Katie, because whenever I see her in something I think, "I want to have sex with her." And then that stupid song from DC starts playing and it won't get the hell out of my head and then I see all her little DC friends and I think "Well hell, if I ever tried to bang her, I'd have to kill her to preserve my sanity." And that's just too much of a hassle.
In short:
I blame teh thetans.
And Xenu.

Actually, the best Rickman film for emoting the Scientolovibe would be "Closetland".

Your puerile value judgements on such a gifted thespian as Alan Rickman do nothing to further useful discourse on autism.

... Or perhaps I have to see RhynoD's latest and lose all hope for this thread. Mooseica should feel free to repost his OP if he wishes, but this exemplar of General's finest is getting locked.
