Now, I had never heard of Fanta until I went to Amsterdam.

I'll admit, I like it... I really like it. Of course, liking it doesn't enable me to understand this set of commercials...

I tried watching it but I still don't get it. The above link is a series of Japanese commercials for Fanta...

Am I the only one who just doesn't get it? Anyone else have strange ads they want to share?

I totally get them, they are hilarious. Great advertising genius they are.

I don't know unless it is simply that a stressful day of crazy at school is made better by Fanta. Which would be true indeed. ;)

Interesting that you had never heard of Fanta, it has been around for years. I guess just not everywhere.

I wish they had those kinds of commercials in the States, I like the shogun in particular. "INSOLENCE!!!" :D

Edit: Does 'third grade' in this context refer to third year high school students?

Nah, not evil or odd. It's just that people in other countries feel weirded out because they're not used to advertisement like that. They don't understand.

For hilarity, search YouTube for Pizza-la-Kun commercials or Toto toilet commercials.:D

I was referring to all Japan, not just their adverts.

E.g.

Sushi,
Whale Hunting for food,
Everthing they did in the last War,
Putting bodies in Baths filled with sand,
Japanese "magazines" (look on Wiki).

Odd is good. I wouldn't say evil, though incomprehensible may describe some of the anime I've seen... (Utena anyone?)

I love the commercials even if I don't get 'em.

When it comes to discussions about other countries, I find the best course is to ignore Dukebury, he thinks (apparently) that if it isn't british then it couldn't possibly be any good.

Unless I'm way off base, I'm pretty sure I get them too.

Don't think of the commercial in relation to fanta, I think the two are supposed to be seperate, like 'see this funny situation, now buy this unrelated product'

Except of course, that all the students are enjoying a refreshing Fanta after the ridicilous situation.

I think they should bring those commercials to the US... exaclty as they are (subtitled, of course).

After a few years in Japan... I've just given up trying to understand the commercials. Attempting to do so just gives you a headache as you try to find the reason why Nissan thought having a woman dressed as an African explorer piloting a robotic T-Rex and chancing after a guy in a car then asking him for a ride would sell cars.

Part of what may be missing is that it's a series of send ups of "San nen B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinpachi-sensei) (3rd Year Class-B Teacher Kinpachi), a well loved Japanese Jr. High school drama, using stereotypical characters from Japanese TV and pop culture.

I don't know unless it is simply that a stressful day of crazy at school is made better by Fanta. Which would be true indeed. ;)

Interesting that you had never heard of Fanta, it has been around for years. I guess just not everywhere.

Close - Jr. High.

That being said, most of the time, the commercials are better than the shows.
