This thread concerns the game DEFCON (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defcon_%28game%29). I am thinking about starting a NationStates server for it, and I was wondering if anyone here was interested. You are all also welcomed to discuss the game, and any strategies that you find useful.

US : "Global Nuclear Domination game"

I listen to Tom Lehrer songs when I play it.

Along the trail you'll find me lopin'
Where the spaces are wide open,
In the land of the old A.E.C. Yee-hoo!
Where the scenery's attractive,
And the air is radioactive,
Oh, the Wild West is where I wanna be.

'Mid the sagebrush and the cactus
I'll watch the fellows practice
Droppin' bombs through the clean desert breeze. A-ha!
I'll have on my sombrero,
And of course I'll wear a pair o'
Levis over my lead B.V.D.'s.

I will leave the city's rush,
Leave the fancy and the plush,
Leave the snow and leave the slush
And the crowds.
I will seek the desert's hush,
Where the scenery is lush,
How I long to see the mush-room clouds.

'Mid the yuccas and the thistles
I'll watch the guided missiles,
While the old F.B.I. watches me. Yee-hoo!
Yes, I'll soon make my appearance
(Soon as I can get my clearance),
'Cause the Wild West is where I wanna be.

Sleep, baby, sleep, in peace may you slumber,
No danger lurks, your sleep to encumber.
We've got the missiles, peace to determine,
And one of the fingers on the button will be German.

Why shouldn't they have nuclear warheads?
England says no, but they all are soreheads.
I say a bygone should be a bygone,
Let's make peace the way we did in Stanleyville and Saigon.

Once all the Germans were warlike and mean,
But that couldn't happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they've hardly bothered us since then.

So, sleep well, my darling, the sandman can linger.
We know our buddies won't give us the finger.
Heil - hail - the Wehrmacht, I mean the Bundeswehr,
Hail to our loyal ally!
M.L.F.
Will scare Brezhnev.
I hope he is half as scared as I!

First we got the bomb and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's O.K.,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way!
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can't wipe us out for at least five years!
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white!
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one, too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who's next, who's next, who's next?
Who's next?

When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or'l
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do.
(But don't you worry.)

No more ashes, no more sackcloth,
And an arm band made of black cloth
Will some day nevermore adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

And we will all go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we will all go together when we go.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be French fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There'll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Oh we will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning of the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.,
And the party will be come-as-you-are.

Oh, we will all burn together when we burn.
There'll be no need to stand and wait your turn.
When it's time for the fallout
And Saint Peter calls us all out,
We'll just drop our agendas and adjourn.

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas.
Go directly, do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollahs.

And we will all go together when we go.
Every Hottentot and every Eskimo.
When the air becomes uranious,
We will all go simultaneous.
Yes, we all will go together
When we all go together,
Yes we all will go together when we go.

So long, mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But while you swelter
Down there in your shelter
You can see me
On your TV.

While we're attacking frontally
Watch Brinkally and Huntally
Describing contrapuntally
The cities we have lost.
No need for you to miss a minute of the agonizing holocaust. Yeah!

Little Johnny Jones, he was a US pilot,
And no shrinking violet was he.
He was mighty proud when World War III was declared.
He wasn't scared, no siree!

And this is what he said on
His way to Armageddon:

So long, mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But though I may roam,
I'll come back to my home
Although it may be
A pile of debris.

Remember, mommy,
I'm off to get a commie,
So send me a salami
And try to smile somehow.
I'll look for you when the war is over,
An hour and a half from now!

There's a special game mode where it's all over in 45 minutes. On the other hand, one can play for an extremely tense 5 or 6 hours if there are quite a few players in the game, when people try to bide their time with their nukes, and form shaky alliances whilst they put subs along their 'friends' coast (as submarines are the only unit which doesn't show up on allied maps).

It's superb, really. Although Europe generally has the best chance, outside of the USSR, of actually winning.

Had many fun times playing defcon (my music for it is "War pigs" "Electric funeral" and "Children of the grave" all by Black Sabbath)

Had 1 time playing Europe vs the US, the US would not fire their nukes no matter how I provoked him..... then after managing to get 2 airfields and New York with my bombers, he typed in the chat window
"Thats it... I gonna ****ing roast you" and he started firing off his silos...... unfortunately my subs were all round his east coast and took out his silos before they could get off more than 4 nukes.
Then I messaged
"Frying tonite!"
and lobbed 60 nukes plus the remainder of my sub nukes at him
Ahhhh the loverly green glow of radioactive fallout :D
He was a good sport though in not disconnecting before he got fried :)
thats the one thing I hate about the game

What a tool, to not have carriers on anti-sub duty all along the coast, and one up the strip that kinda goes into Canada, too. That's like the most obvious place to put subs, ever.

The main thing to remember as a US play is that you have to have some internal radar sites, or people can send a fleet up above Canada and take most of the Eastern Seaboard out with bombers, instead of the classic, if stupid "launch all of your nukes at NYC and hope that at least 1 gets through Newfoundland intact" manouvre that many are prone to take on.

Defcon, oh how I love that game. But, oh how I suck at it. I do enjoy flashing the bombers right away from South America (allied with NA) and hitting Europes West coast. With good scouting its usually good for a couple of radar stations, some airbases, and a silo or two. Sadly, NA usually gets all the population hits on Europe after that, but they do a good job absorbing nukes bound for SA, so I usually have a good late-game presence. I'm just always a little too slow in my Big Strike.

Sounds good - hit me up with a TG and I'll send you my MSN, so we can organise other games in future or whatever.

The time has been changed to 6:00 PM GMT. The title of the server will be "NationStates", the password will be "Maxx".

Edit: Does anyone here have suggestions for the game's settings, or is "default" alright with everyone?

A new game will be hosted Wenesday (tomorrow). Unless otherwise notified, ye may assume that it follows the same specifications of the above game.

I'm too busy squishing peasants in AoE3 to bother with this. I much love the sound of peasants dying. That and I have some ass to kick in Civ4...

Plus I'm such a rage-quitter and I hate morons when I play online games...

My guess is that it is effectively possible to play a peaceful Civ III, if you so choose, whereas DefCon necessarily requires annihilation of entire continents.

Not if you play survival mode. Anyway, why not "Suggestive Themes" then, instead of "Mild Violence"?

That game is hard...I kept getting nuked into oblivion, I only played with AI never with actual people...

haven't played it in forever though...

New Manvir:

I started playing agianst AI, and had to change my approach to it completely when I started playing against people. Hell, I still get pwned regularly. Other humans are *sneaky* and there are some excellent continent specific strategies for both attack and defend. But its worth it, multiplayer is sooooo much more fun than against AI.

But it sucks when there are three people and three AI, and everybody, AI included, pounds you. I have been on the reciveing end of that so many times I lost count.

Anyone who is interested in participating in future games should create a puppet nation and join the region "DefCon" where times will be arranged.
