Yep, the mean old Dalai Lama's out to ruin the Olympics.
"Evidence shows that the violent incidents were created by the 'Tibet independence' forces and masterminded by the Dalai Lama clique with the vicious intention of undermining the upcoming Olympics and splitting Tibet from the motherland," thundered an editorial in the People's Daily yesterday.

It's an editorial, and the editor is probably the Chinese equivalent of J.J. Jameson.
As much as I hate the damned filthy commies that are still dominating the Chinese government I feel I must point out that the Dalai Lama is an exiled king of Tibet whole lived in luxury while his people starved and were brutally punished with everything from eye gouging to death for what most today would consider trivial offenses. Since the Chinese took over they've introduced electricity, running water, and secular education. They've also outlawed anything critical of the ruling party, started up forced labor for anyone who steps out of line, and they've done al they can to brainwash people into believing a seriously fucked up ideology known as socialism. Pick your cult but don't think for a second that you'll be getting a saint with whichever side you choose.

I get the feeling that the Dalai Lama might be SLIGHTLY more enlightened now.

1. The Dalai Lama was not a king. He is the traditional spiritual and secular ruler of Tibet. He is no longer its secular ruler and has no desire to be. The TGIE has its own parliament.
2. Before the Chinese took over his country and killed a million of his people, the Dalai Lama was one of the foremost proponents of change and modernization. He wanted to bring Tibet into the new world in a way that be harmonious with their traditions and beliefs; when he was not allowed to do that, he attempted to work with the Chinese to develop a plan together. He was again denied.
3. False dilemma.
4. A lot of this was already covered in threads about a week ago. You might look into them.

Do you seriously think Tibet is going to return to the way it was in 1950 if the Chinese get out?

According to Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenzin_Gyatso%2C_14th_Dalai_Lama
He was took the throne in November 1950 at the ripe old age of Fifteen. The Chinese Army had invaded the previous month.

I highly doubt that he was in charge of these "slaves" before the Chinese invaded.

Do not compute. How could the Dalai Lama attempt to make changes when he wasn't ever king?

Bullshit.
He's against homosexuality and abortion, loves guns and religion. He's the Mike Huckabee of South-East Asia, but people don't have a chance to vote against him and laugh at his stupid beliefs.

How can anybody? Regardless of whether he's their secular political leader, he's still the spiritual leader and that gives him quite a bit of influence. Apparently not enough. Shortly after becoming ruler, he had attempted to make those changes himself and was resisted by the established tibetan aristocracy.

Oh, I know the past was bad. But look beyond the past. The current government is a constitutional democracy.
