Also, I have yet to find a perfectly good human. That said, may I assume that the reference to the brain includes the higher functioning (or in some contexts here, non-functioning) parts of the brain, such that the persistence of merely the autonomous function governing tissue would be insufficient to infer "function" of the "brain" in the more inclusive sense?

There's an interesting study on cases of pediatric hemispherectomy where the removal of half the brain was eventually compensated in near entirety by the remaining lobes. If a brain dead persons necrotic tissue were removed (what's the risk, anyway) would the remaining neural mass attempt to emulate the lost functions?
