America: Good or Bad?

Simple question, and while yes, there are ares of grey, it is a question of proportion.

Does the good outweigh the bad, or does the bad outweigh the good?

Explain your answer, if you wish...

Yes, without question.

As far as explaining, in my opinion there is no place that is perfect, but there are plenty of places that don't even try to be. We at least do strive for better. :)

This thread is WAY too general.

If you don't like mushrooms or cheese, but love tomatoes, and I ask you if you like a mushroom cheese tomato pizza, your dislike of mushrooms and cheese will lead you to dislike mushroom cheese tomato pizza.

Do you operate from a mindset where America has too many sins to atone for, or from a mindset where the world owes a debt to America? Pretty straightforward, I think.

Throughout history, the harm and good America does has probably averaged out.

What I meant is there is too much room for debate. There's a million arguments for and against each side.

The American people are amongst the finest in the world. The American government on the other hand.....

Still, in my opinion the United States has more often than not been the lesser evil (does anyone really believe we would have been better off if the Soviets had won the Cold War or the Germans the Second World War?).

America propped up a lot of murderous dictators in Latin America and Africa during the Cold War, which was inexcusable. But the Communists were often just as bad if not worse.

So in the end, at worst America's good/bad averages out.

As far as I am concerned though, America has done more good than harm. If only for its tremendous innovations in medicine and technology, which are now shared throughout the world.

I think on balance the existence of the US has been a good thing for the world. In economic terms, in political terms (the existence of a largely liberal political system has been vital for the development of our modern free countries), as far as keeping Imperialists, Nazis and Soviets at bay is concerned and because America's economic system has done a good job at producing not just inventions but actually introducing those inventions into our homes.

Of course I could name about a billion things wrong with the US, and it seems to go through periods of revealing another side to it that is only to be condemned, but on balance I'd still say more good came from it than bad.

Apologies will get you nothing, I'm afraid. Do you think this is just about music, you poor naive fool? No! It is about something much greater than that.

Consider first, if you will, that Britain fired the first shot at this proverbial Lexington with the Spice Girls. Oh, they'll tell you that they genuinely like them but there was a deeper plot. It's true I'm afraid, that Britian was looking to regain the original thirteen colonies. We've been warring ever since.

I'd say, the US as a whole has done alot of both, i can't say which outwieghs the other.
In order to do that you'd need information about, all it's people, it's culture, it's government, it's crime, it's health, it's foreign affairs, and compare them to other countries and probably some more things too. This task would take a very long time.

WWI and WWII. Before America, both were pretty much at a stalemate. Britain had Germany countered at every move, but didn't have enough to make a push. (Then you could technically argue Japan did, but America did do all of the reaction on it's own).

Yes, America's screwed up sometimes. Vietnam, had it been handled correctly, could have actually turned out quite well. Iraqs not turning out that bad in the scheme of things, if you really look at it - we didn't put in a puppet President, because the guy America wanted wasn't elected.

America does a lot of good for the world. Government sponsored and Civilian sponsored foreign aid to Africa and Asia.

America has it's ups and downs. However, unlike everyone else, America gets a lot more blame for everything because we've got a giant, tech'd up Military, which translates into power, and the people with the most power are watched the most, and every little slip up is called out.
It's like politics. Those who have the most power, like world leaders, are chastized the most.

the dominance of pseudo-conservatism and the usurpation of the political proccess by a corporatocracy difficult to distinguish from more common forms of organized crime, has rendered today's america an utter pariah.

i'm not talking about 'satans', great or small, but about real affects of real policies on real people, places and things.

both internationally and domesticly as well.

one can argue both that there have been some bennifits, and that there have been worse international behaviors by other nations in the past, perhapse even currently. yet none have ever been as powerful and far reaching in the negativeness of their influence and even outright bullying.

be honest the US is a superpower, and everyone hates a superpower, i mean everyone hated the british when it had her empire and the French e.t.c.

and don't forget: each gave everyone a damd good reason to. america is no exception to that either.

One good thing I can think of Spain atm is that you fought off vicious barbaric moors in the "whatever-noone cares" century.

....Yes I like history.

I'm assuming that you were being sarcastic?
In the early-mid medieval period - the time when the Spanish (and the Portuguese) were fighting the Moors in Iberia, the Islamic nations at the time were far more advanced and cultured than the Christian nations of the time. They suffered Crusades in the Holy Land and were forced out of Iberia by the late 15th century. Despite this, they were generally more tolerant of other religions than the Christians at the time.
Plus, the Spanish forcing the Moors out of Iberia more or less led to the Inquisition, which is justly infamous.

On the topic of the thread, though, I think it's safe to say that any country which is in a position of power will do more harm than good. Colonial Spain, Napoleon's France, the British Empire, the Soviet Union and the USA, all were superpowers at some time, and weren't exactly lovely to the world at large.
Unfortunately, that's Human Nature - everyone wants more than their share, and those with the power can get it.
One thing I will say is that the USA in the last 20 or so years seems to have learned little from it's past, and is still very hypocritical about it's aims.

Edit: I don't really believe that only anything out of Europe was good and everywhere else was bad. All cultures have some good and some bad, its not only Christians who can be wrong, deal with it. You and your generalizing strawmen best leave this area before you embarass yourself some more.

No, Im someone who recognizes that everyone sucks or has the potential to suck.

Just like everyone has the potential to be enlightened or virtuous.

Your characterization of the Moors as barbarians, especially when compared to Christian Medieval Europe, shows you know jack about history.

No. I think what we are, compared to you, people who know that the one thing that is black and white is that virtually nothing is black and white. Least of all anything involving humanity.

If I've correctly pulled your meaning out of that compost pile of verbiage, all I have to do to counter your erroneous statement is mention the Rape of Nanking, or the Bataan Death March.

As for America, there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather live than right here.

Ok, on behalf of my relatives who suffered under the Japanese, why don't you go read a fucking history book on the Great Pacific War before you make uneducated comments on Japanese conduct of war?

Nanking Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre)
Manila Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_massacre)
Sook Ching Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sook_Ching_massacre)
Changjiao Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changjiao_massacre)
UNIT SEVEN THIRTY FUCKING ONE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731)
Sandakan Death Marches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandakan_Death_Marches) <- This happened in my state, I've seen the fucking memorial.

Yes, these are only wiki links, and yes, they're only a fraction of Japanese crimes committed. Its not hard to find information on these outside of wikipedia, either in books or on the internet.

So the name Napoleon Bonaparte and the presence of French colonies around the world, and even the fact that, after English, the foreign language most prominently spoken in a place as far away from France as Japan is French -- none of that means anything?

Yes, the French had an Empire, and no it wasn't that long ago. Please, for the love of all that's good and holy, read something besides Chick tracts and your Kenner My First ASV* Bible

We at least do strive for better. :)

Does America strive to be better, though, or has it sedated itself with consummerism and allowed eegeits to take the show over and run it for profit?

I mean, partiotism is fun and all and there are definitely individuals in America that do strive to make it perfect (Obama 08...), but I think most Americans, like most human beings, don't really care if their country/world is perfect, as long as they're free to eat tasty food whilst their cable TV washes over them. I mean, look at all of us. We're wasting time on an online forum, for goodness sake, and some of us aren't even posting!

(I don't think that this laziness is mankind's natural disposition, btw, I just think that our greed-driven global culture has made it seem like it is.)

well thoses coutnries do that to there own people this is bad but not as bad as another coutnry killing MILLIONS of innocents to end a war.....

well after reading through posts etc reading up history i am mistaken a bit by i stil stand by my point that the founding of america killed millions the civil war more ww something more inncoecnts in every war americas been it shitloads of innocents have died on america's part sure every does it but the point is america does it and acts like they "had: too and pretends they have a clean consience while doing it ......

sure other countries do it but not on americ's scale........
consitution equal rights etc still didnt stop the land steal and stuff of the natives sure it help but it still continued.

americas helped people no doubt but it has also done alot more in terms of badness

If we're gonna go for the culture slant that some people did..

America = birthplace of jazz. Beat that, ho.

Plus, skiffle (the British genre that the Beatles -among other first wave British Invasion bands- started in) has it's roots in American folk musics (like blues).

Oh yeah- THE BLUES. If it hadn't been for Robert Johnson, who would have inspired The Rolling Stones or Eric Clapton?

We also can claim John Phillip Sousa- not for his marches (sorry, they're fun to play but can get bland), mostly cause I think the sousaphone is the most ridiculously fun instrument. (Not that I'm good. I think it's fun BECAUSE I'm not good.)

We also can claim Victor Wooten, one of the best bassists alive. (And member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones.)

If we're going to talk about wars and grief.. no country can really throw stones. So while we've made (are making) mistakes, so have other countries. Doesn't make any of them right.

Maybe America has caused more good than harm.

And Germany has caused more harm than good.

But that's old history, baby! Today the roles have reversed. And no good deeds in history allow any nation to place itself before others.

If by "to the world" the OP meant "the world outside the USA", I'd say generally more bad than good.
Neo-imperialism, doublethink foreign policies, war-on-terror thingy etc are typical examples of stupid policies, expecially dangerous when enacted by a superpower.
