The March Madness Thread!

Yeah, it's that time again.

It's a good time to be CBS, or a basketball fan. I feel a little dirty for seeing the last 10 seconds of a Katie Couric broadcast, but other than that, the games have been good, and there are going to be a slew of them this weekend. Nice! :)

So, who are your upset picks, I ask, and who do you think will win the tournament?

Me, I'm just a fan - I have no clue. My former school isn't playing, so that's out. I'd like to see Tennessee or maybe Texas win it, but I have no idea who is favored. I'll make a poll of the number 1 and 2 seeds, just to see what everyone thinks, since the odds tend that way, but I'm really in the mood to see some sort of upset in the Final Four. :)

well the US government put a whole list of state names in a hat, then pick one at random, that picked state is the one that will be neglected by the other ones, then they have a boxing match between the politicians who represent each of the states the one who loses has to stand for the negletected state. So it's quite fitting of the title 'madness'. Poor USA

Exactly.

And then they put CSU Fullerton in the Midwest Division, just to add to the Madness this year. It makes perfect sense to those in the know, I'm sure. :p

Some of us rather enjoy the game, so that's why the thread was started. I used to go into baseball threads and post nonsense about how dull baseball is. I still believe it, but I don't bother those who enjoy the game because I decided I wanted to stop acting like an asshole.

It's faster-paced than an NBA game, and often more exciting. Seeing is believing, really - I didn't think I'd get hooked when I started watching it in high school. Watching NCAA gives you a preview of the rookies coming into the NBA, if you're into that, as well. But mostly, the games are just great.

Where in Wisconsin, exactly?

I wouldn't worry about the Badgers...they played well in that game down the stretch. I've got them losing to North Carolina in the Final Four, which is very respectable. The only real competition in their bracket is Kansas (I think Georgetown will lose to Gonzaga in the 2nd round).

The only upsets that I picked in Round 1 were Oregon over Miss. St (9 over an 8, not much of an upset) and St Mary's over Miami (10 over a 7).

So far the only game I picked wrong was Kansas St. beating USC.

The first round is usually quite predictable, it's the second round where everyone's brackets start getting busted. :p

It's faster-paced than an NBA game, and often more exciting.

The main reason I enjoy NCAA, and don't even bother with the NBA, is the money.

The vast majority of the players you see in the NCAA tournament won't even sniff a professional career...they play for pride and the love of the game.

Meanwhile you have the NBA...overpaid, underperforming players, and quite unwatchable.

Anyone who calls themselves a basketball fan and chooses to watch an NBA game over an NCAA game needs to have their head examined.

Damn Duke and their luck. They should have lost that game.

Anyway, my Spartans seem to be playing really well right now. The Temple game proves we can win even if Neitzel has a bad shooting game. We had great defense and our offense was passable. I can see us having the advantage defensively vs Pittsburgh. The offense will determine the game. If Neitzel gets hot like he was in the Big 10 tourney, we have a great shot at winning.

Just remember that I am from wisconsin...
Even when Nietzel was hot in the big ten tournament, Wisconsin still beat them. I personally think that MSU has been over rated all year. They aren't as good as Wisconsin, Purdue, or Indiana. I doubt they will beat Pitt and if they do then memphis will take them down.

They have underachieved all year. But even then, we beat Purdue, Indiana (by alot) and Texas during the year. We had Wisconsin in the Big 10 tourney for all but the final 4 minutes. If we played then like we played the rest of the game, we would be Bit 10 tourney champions now. Yes, MSU has underachieved, but at heart they are a really good team.

I didn't say they were a bad team just over rated. As I recall the big Indiana win was right after Sampson left. Wisconsin beat Texas too. Was your win at Texas? Were you missing your leading scorer at that time? Doesn't matter if you were winnign for all but the last four minutes. That just means MSU can't finish what they start. Well, I'm already regretting my Duke pick in my $$ bracket. Although that was motivated more by a 'Go-alone' strategy than anything else (I figured with everyone else inevitably picking Kansas & NC, I could hope for their upsets & go another way. The problem with that strategy is that, in order for it to actually work, Duke has to not suck. So my strategy may be flawed.).

College basketball doesn't necessarily have a big following during the regular season, at least when compared to other sports such as the NFL, NBA, or even college football. But when the NCAA tournament (essentially, 'March Madness') begins, there's a huge Office Pool phenomenon.

That's a good point. The level of energy and enthusiasm seems a lot higher in an NCAA tournament game, and of course the crowd is always at least twice as fanatical as a regular-season NBA crowd. It's great.

Also notable is the fact that NCAA tournament games are staggered so that you see several finales in a row toward the end of each game. Makes for constant action.

I'm really enjoying the Gonzaga/David game right now. :)

Right now, Mississippi State over Oregon by three, if you're watching it on basic cable. There are 32 games in the first round alone. That's where most of the Madness comes in - the sheer number of games.

Not too shocking, given the crazy games we've seen so far. And another day of upsets might be in the works today it seems, even if Duke's awful first round made their elimination unsurprising. :p
