So, aye, any other Generalites off to NUS National Conference?

Right, the National Union of Students' National Conference is on the 1st to the 3rd of April in Blackpool, any other Generalites off?

It's my second time, and I heartily recommend people blag their way into the unions and get to conference at least once in their student lives, it's Good Times.

No, although it wouldn't have been hard to go. We had as many people standing for election as we have delegates for the convention this year, such is the sheer irrelevance of the NUS.

My uni never really had much interaction I don't think. I've certainly never got involved in student politics, though I was at one day of the Labour party conference a few years ago, but that was because I was providing musical interludes.

No, but then I haven't been a student in almost 15 years...

The NUS is the most pathetically awful organisation ever invented.

No offence.

Aye, I hate the actual conference part, and the way that the NUS is run in general, it's a bunch of self-important lefties talking out of their arses for 14 hours a day at conference.

On the other hand, the fact that you meet hundreds of awesome people on the first night, some of them bound to be staying at your hotel, means that the other two days are basically a drunken orgy, which I don't think anyone can disagree with.

Unless they were a nun or something.

Nah. After being pestered the whole month to vote in the Student elections I'll give it a miss. However I'll be standing for Entertainments Officer next year at my Student Union.

... I was going to just rant about how I hate the NUS, but I've had a better idea. I'm going to try and get myself elected as a delegate and then go and pie the NUS President at conference. That is so something I want to do. :D

Maybe not this year. I think elections have been and gone, but maybe next year... *plots*.

I will totally vote for you. If I could. Which I can't. Ah, well, there's your only vote out the window. ;)

As for the NUS, the only thing it's good for is a 10% discount.

As for the NUS, the only thing it's good for is a 10% discount.Meh, I managed to get myself elected to to the council of my student union (they like to think they have a say in how the SU is run...) with all of two votes. One of which was my own. I'm sure it wouldn't be that much harder to get elected as a delegate.

That's even considering that it would be a contested election. Several of the sab positions on the Exec were uncontested this year... students don't care about student democracy. Me thinks it's because the government learnt to give students more money so they pissed for more of their waking hours and therefore unable to care about anything of much consequence other than where the next drink is coming from. I reckon students in general and Heather Mills should hook up together and they can all complain about how unfair life is together. How anyone could complain about only getting £35,000 a year to look after their kid is beyond me... and another thing... *continues ranting*

edit: I think you're only supposed to get the 10% discount now if you buy an 'NUS Extra' card now. I think they cost £10. Me, I just stand there at the counter asking for a discount until I get one.

I love to in there and to cause chaos and disorder by talking about how great our nation is, about how the world is not warming, Social Darwinism, that people are not all equal, what the world is really like, how Socialism only works in theory, and other things along those lines.:p

I still get a 10% discount with my normal Student Card though one time the Cashier made a mistake on a pair of shoes worth 25 quid. I got them for 18! The elections at my uni are a massive deal. Huge voter turnouts.

Exactly why I voted to disaffiliate at the last referendum. Sixty grand a year to pay self important lefties to get drunk, and another £10 to actually get the 'benefits' of being a NUS member. I've yet to see any evidence that the NUS has done anything even partially worthwhile for its member unions or students. Unfortunately, almost everybody else (being the other five people) who actually vote in these elections went 'zomg! What will we do to plump our CVS???' and we stayed in the most useless, pointless and crap organisation ever devised by mankind.

Ugh. I hate NUS.

Though people give a variety of reasons for that: introduction of e-voting, having a referendum a couple of week earlier, and lack of contested elections.

You can use your Extra card online, which is nice. Can't do that with a regular student card.

Why not just say "I'm running as the Conservative Future candidate"?

The same level of derision, but without any level of pity that might result from you actually saying those things (in a kind of 'aww, poor evil fascist bastard who hates the working class, just like I will in 3 years when I finish my Medicine course and have to pay 40% but rather wouldn't, but ssh' kind of way). Also about half the effort.

Roehampton University. It was just easy to vote, took less than 5 minutes, do it on the way to a lecture. You couldn't walk into the library without seeing a large group of people casting their votes.

Depends if you like a really nice clique-y, bugger-the-peons-who-aren't-us atmosphere in a select group of people or not, really.

The NUS is pretty useless, to be honest. It's a place for lefties to play at being politicians. That's about all it's good for.

Fortunately, no one's told the shop assistants that. Besides, HMV and Virgin (or whatever it is now) have their own student cards. And, really, where else, except for takeaways who don't actually understand enough English to know the difference between an NUS card and an NUS Extra card, am I going to want to actually buy anything?
