Which is worse?

If a long-term relationship ends, which is worse in your opinion...

1. Being left for someone else, whom you can compare to yourself and decide that they either are indeed a better choice for your former partner, or that your former partner is an idiot.

2. Being left for nobody..."I don't know who I want to be with, I just know I don't want to be with you."

Poll coming.

For myself, I don't think it makes any difference, except in so far as having another person lined up implies that your partner cheated on you before they left which shows lack of respect as well as lack of love.

When I left my ex-husband, he found it extremely difficult to come to terms with the idea that I would rather be on my own than with him. He would have preferred there to be another person involved - he saw it as the difference between "good" (him) and "better" (other person) and "awful" (him) and "neutral" (being alone). He had to face up to me leaving him because he was horrible and not because another person seduced me.

That doesn't mean that anybody who gets dumped for nobody is horrible btw - just that he was :)

Founding out my ex was cheating on me and then having her tell me she preffered him to me was infinitly worse than just having her break up with me.

Well, I'd say both depend highly on the individuals concerned as well as the situation - as with many things, I don't think there's a one size fits all answer.

How you're dumped is probably more important than why you were dumped.

Being left for nobody. It sucks. Being alone is better than being with you...:(

I don't know... Both would be horrible...

although this is a great statement as to why the second would be worse...

I'd prefer to be left for nobody than for someone else because then both of us have no one and are hence miserable separately instead of together. Wouldn't bother me for long because I could just dust off my metaphorical black book.

I would have to say the first, on the grounds that, while the second can imply that you are so undesirable that no one is better, it can also imply that the "fault" lies with the person leaving you.

The first always signifies that you are less desirable than the new person, which is rather depressing, in my opinion.

there is no worse.

being left when you didnt expect it is hard. there is no way to compare the different experiences of different people.
