Robotics gets frightening

Check this out - soon we'll have mechanical army attack dogs. 36 seconds is where it's just amazing and there's more on ice where it really reminds of some film I can't quite remember.

Now if someone can just put a frickin' laser on its head...

I might add a poll.

Man, if I saw a squad of THOSE things coming towards me over the hill, I'd break and run.
Seriously, if they'd spliced that footage into the Blair Witch Project the movie would've actually been scary.

I'd guess the technology for this will scale pretty rapidly, in about 10 years we can have pretty damn realistic robotic dogs. The question is, what would you want to use it for.

I'd be really happy with an errand dog - I need a crate of beer, I sms instructions to my dog and it whips down to the local shop and brings one back in a minute or so - I don't need to leave my chair.

What do you want it to do, aside from invading Canada?

So we've got robotic dogs and the Large Hadron Collider...that means...

...I, for one, welcome our Benefactors and the Universal Union they have built with our help and cooperation in the aftermath of the Seven Hour Liberation War. Small minds may refer to them as the "Combine" and attempt to resist their might, but only through collaboration with their rule can we reap the colossal benefits of unification. Be careful, be safe, and under no circumstances allow yourselves to be deluded in to the mystical superstitions surrounding the so-called "one free man".

Those are built as pack "animals". Not as attack drones.

If I was going to build a walking robot, I'd make it walk like a cat. Cats place a hind foot where the corresponding front foot just was. Walking like that means you always know you've got a good spot to step to.

Sure that's what they're developing them as but if you're telling me some general hasn't already had the bright idea of sticking on a weapon, bullet proofing them and sending them into battle then I'm sure there's a monkey out there I call nephew.

i watched that video while listening to Sacrificial Dance from Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring. made it creepier still

it's strange how the thing looks ridiculous until something or someone fucks with it and then it starts to move like a real animal.

I'd imagine a feline gait would be a lot more difficult to make work.

I was going to make the same observation. It looks a bit off, mainly because it's so slow I think, but when it's got to catch itself for some reason, it could be an actual dog in a weird costume. The part with the ice was unnerving.

I was glad to see they're working on making it run, too. I don't see this being too useful until it can do a gallop and has a large enough power supply to resupply over large distances and such.

They're certainly lovely, I posted that and others in the Guerilla Art thread a week ago or so because, well I'm simply ahead of the game to be honest.

The difference between engineering and art is only in the mind - beautifully said.

It's the ones that can shoot you (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/images/talon_eod-robotsiraq2.jpg) that are more concerning to me, although this example certainly shows improvements in the basic locomotion thing.

yes, but tanks weigh several tonnes and are designed for open warfare mostly. They don't need to go up stairs. That looks like its for urban warfare. Which includes steps.

Holy balls.

It's not gonna sneak up on anything with a sense of hearing, but the balance and stability of the thing is a complete mind-blow. If they manage to get it to run...and then put some teeth or other weaponry on it...yikes.

Well, if they can make it walk and run and be as nimble as all that, I don't see how stairs would be much of an engineering challenge. Presumably if this was a combat robot they would make modifications to allow it to walk up steps, or they would use it in situations not involving steps. :)

I for one can see it as some kind of kamikaze robotic terrorist suicide bomber.

http://www.darpa.mil/body/news/2006/crusher_upi.pdf

This is an unmanned vehicle developed by the U.S. military called Crusher. It is a new type of unmanned vehicle. It no longer requires someone behind the remote like a Predator or Global Hawk. This vehicle is capable of traversing rough terrain completely autonomously, without direct control, completely relying on its algorithms and fed data by a battery of several constantly swiveling cameras. Apparently within a few years, the Crusher will be able to have a weapons system that can identify and destroy targets completely autonomously.

How far does it go before the robot uprising? Get with it, people!
