Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

At least, now we know that violence like this isn't strictly a "human" thing.

Food for thought: Since we have also learned that Chimps (yes, even bonobos)have episodes of extreme brutality, and that makes the 4 most intelligent species on this planet, what are the odds that any extraterrestrial intelligence we ever encounter will be the virtuous paragon of pacifism that we hope it would be?

You're assuming that the nature of creatures doesn't change again at a higher level? After all, it's not very intelligent to constantly be at war as it uses lots of resources and has high risk.

But war does cause progress. Quite a lot of our spaceprogrammes for instance have benefitted greatly from research into weapons technology. Like missiles.

Hmmm - a Shadow vs Vorlon argument. Who wins ;)

It's a reference to the babylon 5 tvseries. One of the major plotlines was the philosophy war between the ancient Shadow and Vorlon races.
The Shadows believed that strive and conflict were the key to progress for the younger races.
The Vorlons believed in "peaceful guidance" of the "do as we tell you" type.

Hmm. Maybe I'll have to check that out some time.
