Jackson Browne. It would be Bob Dylan, but I can't put my finger on why he is a good singer.

And, sorry, but I haven't heard of any of your singers.:)

Edit: Wait missed metallica, that's one now.

Kurt Cobain- the things he could do with his voice. Sends shivers down my spine.

I also like Deryck Whibley, the lead of Sum 41. His voice isn't the best, but it fits what he sings about.

Finally Serj Tankian- for pretty much the same reason as Cobain.

I highly recommend Lisa Lindo's singing. She is not extremely well known, being a female Canadian Jazz singer, but her voice is amazing. Now and then she gets onto the CBC's Vinyl Cafe.

...Alright, calm down. I'm not sure what part of the internet you're from, but where I come from, saying "/topic" doesn't mean "ok, now everyone shut up your opinion is wrong and you can go die if you disagree." Just means something along the lines of "that's what I very strongly believe."

No need to get all confrontational over 6 characters.

What do you think of Tarja Turonen's replacement in Nightwish (Annette Olsen)?

I can´t give you an honest opinion on Annette Olsen because after Tarja Trounen left Nightwish, I stopped listening to the band altogether. The main reason I liked Nightwish was because of Trounen´s voice. After she left, I saw no reason to keep on listening. Sorry.

What do you think of Tarja Turonen's replacement in Nightwish (Annette Olsen)?

Sorry to butt in here, I realise you weren't talking to me lol but as a NW fan i would like to give my two cents. I like Olsens voice but I dont feel it is appropriate for Nightwish. Nightwish have always demanded a singer with a bombastic operatic voice and Olsens voice, whilst pretty and powerful, doesn't cut the mustard, opera-wise. Her vocals turn NW from an awesome group into a better-than-average group. However she has better stagepresence and a better attitude than Tarja, I'll give her that. In short NW has the songs but not the voice and Tarja in her solo stuff has the voice but not the songs lol

I enjoy the music, so regardless of whether Tarja's singing I still think the band warrants attention. While Tarja's voice is impressive, I don't think it's especially central to the band's sound, so losing her isn't as big a deal as, for example, Sonata Arctica losing Jani Liimatainen's guitar. I don't think Nightwish could survive the loss of Tuomas Holopainen, but Tarja might be replaceable.

I'm forced to agree. Olsen's vocals bring a much poppier sound to the band, and the band is going to have to learn how to deal with that. The new album does feature, I think, more Marco Hietala vocals than I've heard previously, as well.
Tapao
18-03-2008, 23:40
It does which is nice in a way because I like his voice however it does force us to endure his live 'singing' :p however NWs strength was always there operatic vocals (IMO) so when Marco is singing there isnt much opera to be had which is def a bad thing in my view!

As I posted, to me, NW was Tarja´s voice. But if you still like them, good for you. In no way am I degrading your musical taste for that. As I said, since I don´t listen to NW anymore, I can´t give you a well rounded opinion on them now.;)

In terms of great, strong vocalists, the two that spring to mind are Christina Aguilera and Quindon Tarver. However, if we're talking about enjoyable singers there's a whole host of soloist singers I can think of... I tend to learn the names of all of the performers in bands I like. It started when I was trying to keep track of which Deep Purple albums I liked, and their sound changed significantly a few times as they swapped out members:

Shades, The Book of Taliesyn, Deep Purple: Ritchie Blackmore, Rod Evans, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Nick Simper

In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Who Do We Think We Are: Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Ian Paice

Burn, Stormbringer: Ritche Blackmore, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, Ian Paice

Come Taste the Band: Tommy Bolin, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord, Ian Paice

Perfect Strangers, The House of Blue Light: Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, Ian Paice

Almost everyone I consider good singers has been mentioned. I'll only mention a few who haven't. I like emotive voices. Especially if they're not particularly pretty voices. There's something about the raw emotional content certain singers can produce with their voices that appeals to me. Janis Joplin is a perfect exampe of this. Not the prettiest vioce by far, but she could inject whatever feeling she had directly into your spine with her voice alone.
Here's a few others:

Jimi Hendrix(famous for his guitar work, but his voice is pure feeling).
Billie Holiday
Alanis Morissette(Yeah! I said it!)
Bob Marley
Louis Armstrong
Anne Murray
Nat King Cole
Frank Sinatra

There are others.

This.

Tori Amos
And this.

Tom Waits
And this.

And the leader singer of Tool.
And this.

Also, Tom McRae.

I have very few favourite singers, what with mainly preferring instrumental bands.
