Adult Swim

So, this night time programming has been around for awhile. It started in 2001 with some anime shows and "Home Movies" and now it shows a variety of programs. I generally like watching Adult Swim, especially shows like "Moral Orel" "The Venture Brothers", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Robot Chicken" and "Death Note". However, I got to say there are two shows I really don't like and wish they would get rid of. They are "Xander: Renegade Angel" and "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" I really don't like those two shows, other than that I can watch the entire Adult Swim lineup on every night. So what shows on Adult Swims do you like, don't like, etc.

It went downhill once 8th MS Team ended.

That was like... 5th grade for me. I'm in 11th now.

I do not watch it.

My son however does. Though only on Fridays and Saturdays, and only to watch Family Guy and Futurama.

I tried watching Tim and Eric, and honestly it just suck. It's like they took SNL, Mad TV, every drug known to man, feces, urine and mixed it all in the direst toilet in the known world and they came out with this program.

I like Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job!. Not everything they do is funny, but I can appreciate it.

I hate hate hate 12oz Mouse, Xander, and Perfect Hair Forever. The anime has finally driven the nail in the coffin of the illusion that I like anime. It's been one of those things that I really thought I should like, seemed like I was supposed to like, but really, I don't like it. Not especially. There are animes I like, but as a whole or an aesthetic, I don't. It's not a value judgment, so all you internet anime freaks cracking your knuckles to spazz all over me and give me your list of animes that I'll totally like and I just haven't seen the right ones, save it.

I'm not as taken with the line up much anymore. When it was Sealab, ATHF, Harvey Birdman, early Robot Chicken, I was a constant viewer. Morel Oral makes me laugh. The Venture Brothers is a slice of awesome. Lucy, Daughter of the Devil is cool. Garth Merengie's Darkplace (not an Adult Swim original) grew on me. Boondocks is pretty brilliant.

I think some of my enthusiasm leak has been an over abundance of Seth Macfarlane. Right now I can, I believe on any given day, watch 6 episodes of Family Guy. The shows funniness drops off dramatically when Adam West isn't on it. I've gone from "eh" about that show to fairly sick of it. And I have a high repeat threshold, I can still watch Futuramas even though I've seen them all a few times.

Futurama is like the Simpson's before it got stale(relatively). Every time I watch an episode, I see something or catch an innuendo I didn't notice before.

Many of their shows are really great. I can't stand anything anime, so that's out, and I've never seen Xander or Perfect Hair or 12-ounce mouse, but I really do like:

Aqua Teen
SeaLab (the early ones)
Darkplace (sometimes)
Birdman
Metalocalypse
Lucy, Daughter of the Devil
Saul of the Molemen (as an homage)
Tim and Eric

They're pretty funny, and more importantly, a nice change of pace from ordinary non-cartoon non-off-color broadcasting. Makes me glad I got cable. :p

The Tim and Eric crap is a successor to the crap show they had on before it Tom Goes to the Mayor, and that was actually not as crap as Tim and Eric awesome good job or whatever. And Xander is better than 12oz Mouse.

It's more performance art than sketch comedy. Yeah, you'll be dissapointed if you're looking for SNL or MadTV. It's also about the format - the ridiculous editing and such. I'll agree that it's not always funny, but it's always engaging.

That's like saying, "Which is better, when I stomp on your left foot or when I stomp on your right foot."

You must've never seen 12oz Mouse. Xander vs 12oz Mouse is like "I can step on your foot, or kick you in the balls." Xander is a stupid premise and really crappy 3D modeling, but at least they are putting more into it than a number of other shows.

For "Tim and Eric," I doubt it would have even been funny if I was twelve. Retarded can be funny, and often it is, but sadly it isn't in this case. It's simply retarded. Tim and Eric should both have their lives extinguished in as painful a manner as possible.

My favorite Adult Swim shows are "Robot Chicken," "Metalocalypse," "Sealab 2021," "Moral Orel" and "FLCL"

Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Sealab 2021
Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law
Space ghost coast to coast
and
The Brax show (I think that is the title)

Shows I hate

Robot Chicken
Tom goes to the Mayor
from memory that is it at least those two are the crappiest shows I have seen I can't even have it on I just have to turn it off.

Here in Australia I don't think we get all of the same shows you do in the USA as there are shows listed i haven't heard, and it is worse now as Boomerang used to show it showing 4 hours Adult Swim twice a week but now the Comedy Channel has taken it and only shows Robot Chicken (which I hate with a passion) and Harvey Birdman, I can only hope they start too show some more of the good stuff

And I hate Bleach more than anything else, but it's really difficult difficult to suggest non-mainstream anime as with anime, more than most other things in my experience, you either love it or hate it and it's difficult to tell on which side people will fall. Really, the safest bet seems to be to suggest the shittiest shounen garbage you know. Like Bleach; a never ending, formulaic shounen anime with episode-spanning mind battles, a story that goes nowhere and massive amounts of filler. Just what people seem to want.

I know, you were just joking about Elfen Lied, but I didn't like that one either. I mean, standard harem anime mixed with over-the-top violence? I don't understand the appeal. And if you're going to suggest anything, at least suggest a movie so that any who might be listening to you won't end up wasting more than an hour and a half of their lives. ;)

WTF is Adult Swim?

The 9-11 p.m block on Cartoon Network. Started on just the weekends showing more mature shows. In the beginning it was just less censored animes and some cartoons. Eventually it bloomed into the bloated mass it is today.

Also partially responsible for the return of Family Guy, or so some have claimed.

Myself, I haven't watched it regularly for some time. I think Cowboy Bebop and YuYu Hakusho were staples the last time I made a point to watch it.

I don't have cartoon Network...We have Bionix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionix) Fridays on YTV, It's basically all Anime. We also have The Detour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Detour#The_Detour_on_Teletoon_and_F-Night) on Teletoon, which from the Wiki article is Adult Swim without the Anime, Although they did show Akira once and I saw some other Anime movie on their before...

And I have a high repeat threshold, I can still watch Futuramas even though I've seen them all a few times.

This basically sums up how I feel. I'll add a bit more.

The Good:

Futurama, now at home at Comedy Central:

(Supervillain The Collector has his pet falcon fly all of three feet to pluck the Quantum Gemerald from Fry's hand)

FRY: That seemed unnecessary.

The Venture Brothers, or Jonny Quest on steroids and LSD:

THE MONARCH: Eventually, one of my henchmen confessed to the crime.

(Quick cut to scene in Monarch's office. Door opens, anonymous henchman stands lifelessly in doorway. Cut to view from behind henchman. A dagger dripping blood is buried in his back through a note reading "I did it".)

Robot Chicken:

Admittedly much funnier for those who grew up with advertisements as cartoons (G.I. Joe, Transformers, et. al.). Otherwise, "My Little Pony: Apocalypse Pony" isn't too funny. Nut-shots in stop-motion, for some reason, really are damned hilarious.

Family Guy: Overexposed, and South Park really got it right in their episode lambasting Seth McFarlane's creation. The addition to his oeuvre of American Dad seemed to cheapen his work a bit, too. But dammit, it's still capable of making me laugh hard. Witness the syrup of ipecac drinking contest...if you can.

Cowboy Bebop: Featuring what is, for my money (and I shelled out a lot buying the DVDs and soundtracks), the best music ever penned for an animated series, I owe Adult Swim a debt of gratitude for introducing me to both this and the outstandingly odd and far too brief FLCL.

Harvey Birdman: Iconic Hanna-Barbera 'toons in a lawyer-show setting. Always decent, occasionally brilliant.

The Okay:

The Boondocks: Uneven animation, but outstanding parody and dialogue. The reverse Uncle Tom character (name escapes me) is a bold statement.

Moral Orel: Sometimes tries too hard, and the episodes with the father going into alcoholic rages aren't funny at all. But good for at least a few solid laughs per show.

Sealab 2021: Delightfully zany in its first season, it went downhill with every attempt afterward, and that's too bad.

ATHF: Also tries too hard and can really beat the dead joke to further death at times, but again, it has the capacity to make me laugh.

The Suck:

Tom Goes to the Mayor and everything else those two cretins have produced. I try to laugh, I really do, but nothing comes out but either "huh?" or "eugh".

Metalocalypse: Okay, I laughed a total of two times at this show over trying out five episodes. Once was when everyone was saying the word "douchebag" over and over again -- I can't help myself, hearing that word cracks me up. The other was when the band retired and nothing would bring them back, but their manager find a guy who wants to commit suicide in an interesting way to their live music -- the process of them succumbing to this "temptation" is riotous. Sadly, that's it.

The rest of the anime: Just plain boring. Especially Witch Hunter Robin.

12 oz. Mouse, Squidbillies, Home Movies: Utterly painful to watch both visually and from a writing standpoint.

Saul of the Mole Men: When you parody Sid & Marty Krofft, you're not supposed to be even worse than their shit was without any actual parody involved. Simply awful.

Lucy, Daughter of the Devil: Supposedly deadpanning horrifying situations and scenes, but in fact, just plain dead. It isn't funny. At all.

If I've missed anything, it's because I haven't seen it.

Ok, so I've been a fan of Adult Swim ever since Toonami went to blah(Big Blah) with pokemo crud and what-not. Yes, even when the elderly were in the pool, and even the little icon man with the "no T back" rule.Adult Swim came in with shows like Cowboy Bebop, Riegn the Conqueror, Inu Yasha, Wolfs Rain, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc(I know I'm missing some)... Quality anime which the American audiance was starved of, because no network known at that time provided entertainment for Anime fans; sans Sci-Fi channels random, and often repeatitous "Japanime."

My first time to tune in I watched Cowboy Bebop; I liked it, became a fan of the show, and waited till next week for the next episode. Then Adult Swim exploded and branched out into the rest of the week with smaller shows such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021. Also picked up Futurama, Home Movies, Family Guy and kept them from media death. At first these shows irratated me as they made no sence. I didn't like them at first, but they grew on me when I started catching up with the type of humor.

Now, Adult Swim has been around for awhile and it continues to shake things up (irregularly). I've hate some shows like 12oz. Mouse, and Tim and Eric and still do. However, I love the Venture Bros., ATHF, Sealab, Metalocalypse, Frisky Dingo, Harvey Birdman, and the Squidbillies [I know sometimes the animation can hurt the eyes, but the dialouge is hilarious]

Lucy, Daughter of the Devil is funny in its premise and execution, the fact that everyone looks like they came out of a Fisher Price playset just adds to the absurdity.

It looks like they're taking everything too seriously. :p

AS was good when there was Futurama. Now they open with Family Guy which is never interesting more than once (compare this to Futurama in which I can watch the same episode dozens of times) and I always miss the new episodes of Boondocks, ATHF, Robot Chicken, and Metalocalypse.

To the hell with anime, and Tim & Eric Awesome Show and the other crap they've put out (Saul of the Moleman, Lucy Daughter of the Devil, Minoriteam, etc.).

Frisky Dingo is decent but I always get confused as to what's going on because I never watched it when it first came out.

Venture Bros. is pretty good too.

Tim and eric is awesome. Did anyone see the one with the "Breadheads"? That was probably some of the funniest tv ever.

Family Guy and robot chicken are good, and futurama was. Everything else is shite.

Don't you have those two mixed up? :p

Quoted for truth. When I heard Family Guy was coming back as a series, I was glad because I was so damn tired of its repeats.

I can quite proudly say that I can watch Futurama for days on end. And I did...during the last Adult Swim Futurama marathon. 60+ episodes in a week. Do I have a life? HELL NO!

I used to watch it just for the anime shows like Yu Yu Hakusho and Inu Yasha (back when I was like 11). Now I no longer have cable. :(
