Poll coming.

The poll isn't coming fast enough!

And no, I wouldn't sell my vote... unless I knew that the Conservatives fucked themselves so badly that they couldn't even get a minority government.

Absolutely, long as I got to set the price.

That's basically what voting is right now. I set a price, and I vote for the candidate who is willing to meet it. Sometimes we can haggle. If no candidate is willing to meet a fair price for me, I don't vote.

It's just not done with cash.

I would take the money but not change my vote. Since votes are private the bribers won't know I scammed them. I have no moral obligation to keep my part of the bargain since bribing me was morally wrong in the first place.

I'm sorry something very strange just happened...

I just gave you a broad stereotype and you seem to have completely ignored the fact that all political parties are the same corrupt mass of incompetence that follow that if they pull enough of a particular stereotype in they can hold power

actually it seems you seem to be suggesting that (as if by magic) the political parties of Spain don't fit my dandy stereotypes which is odd

Oh, no, I'm not ignoring that at all. All political parties, world-wide, are a mass of corruption. But whereas that is true, in Spain elections tend to work better than in the US. Can you say the same thing about your country? Because as far as I know, many believe Geroge W. Bush stole the past elections, which, to me, shows that your system completely ignores what the common folk think and focuses more on sectors. Care to discuss this?;)

That's only because far too many people in the US have no clue what the actual process of electing the president is.

Nope. Despite the fact they're already buying votes and elections in all but name and my vote means absolutely nothing anyways, regardless of whether a party ran in my constituency that actually had an ideology I support which isn't the case. We're already in a sham of a democracy and the buck should stop here; in fact it should have stopped a long time ago.

I would not sell my vote, because it is my belief that voting in government elections is morally wrong. As such, though the circumstance of taking the money up front is better than supporting the externalization of costs, I would not do anything that would obligate me to take part in any electoral process.

Absolutely. Anyone who says no hasn't properly examined the marginal value of a single vote.

My marginal value of my single vote is so low that I'd be willing to sell it for almost any sum that covered the time it took me to vote.

No i would not sell my vote, to allow another person to take what little power i have, then they could use that vote to bring in some obscure and horrible government that would be even worse than the one i have now.
However if the person had the same political views as me then i make money and i vote for who i want.
So in most cases no.

Hell, I GIVE votes away all the time. I give my shareholder proxy to be voted at shareholder meetings for every share of stock I own. I don't see why we shouldn't be able to sell a political vote here and there.

I wouldn't even mind getting a free lunch and a couple beers just to vote the party ticket.

We do that all the time. In fact, we take the money and vote for the person who did not bribe. But here in my poor country where bribery is rife, elections are stolen, and corruption is commonplace, that is highly unlikely, as every candidate bribes almost all  voters.

But we take it not because it is just money, but because we know it is our money, corrupted by those politicians who resort to these means, who were voted by corrupt means in the first place. I personally find it insulting that politicians think they can buy my vote... sure they can buy it but I won't sell it. I also find it disgusting that they take advantage of the poverty of people for their own means of being elected, and then neglecting these poor people and enriching themselves. You know, they seem to want these people to remain poor so they have a steady reliable electorate they can bribe when elections come. But I also fault those who do not think ahead and let their votes be bought; choosing immediate relief with money that will last for only two days, than an honest vote for someone who may be able to lift them up from their plight. Yet trust is slow to pay off; it may not even pay off, and so I understand why people would take the money. But if many people have this attitude, then one should not wonder why this country is a morass in the first place. So to everyone who thinks they would rather sell their vote: think again, lest your country become like ours.

That just gave me an idea. It would be better (still not morally good or even neutral, but better) if the voting rights to a government were issued like stock instead of being universal. That way we could take account of the present value of the nation instead of politicians selling off their legislative rights to the highest bidder regardless of the actual opportunity costs and long-term effects to the item in question. It most certainly wouldn't be perfect, seeing as how they are still legislating and thus still coercing others out of what belongs to them, but it would certainly get rid of a good deal of expropriation.

It depends on what my vote is for. If I'm voting for best ice cream flavor, or most awesome car ever, then sure (as long as I'm getting some money for it, and the voting is for something trivial). For politics though, probably not.
