Migraine Cures

As soon as I post this, I'm off to sleep off a migraine. I really hope I can get to bed before all the symptoms kick in because, once they do, I won't be able to take medication because the prayer to porcelain gods is a foregone conclusion.

NSG, how do you treat your migraines? Any good home cures I can bear in mind for next time?

Marijuana can help. Sleep of course, if you can manage it. Caffeine can also sorta help. I've heard good things about Imitrin or Imotren or Imotrex or something like that - but expensive, never tried it.

I hate migraines.

I toss back extra-strength shit as soon as I get a headache so it doesn't turn into a migraine because if it becomes a migraine, hardcore stuff can barely mitigate it.

Some of the most effective treatments are nutritive. Avoiding certain foods and certain vitamin suplements can greatly reduce the number and severity of migraines.

CHeck out Coenzyme Q10. It's present in very large quantities in certain fish and in organ meats. It's also available as a supplement. *nod*

Caffiene, preferably hot caffiene...such as hot chocolate as soon as it starts. (I'm not a coffee fan). And believe it or not, an orgasm helps. Saying you don't want sex because you have a headache is silly it will actually help it. Also a hot, hot shower helps me.

Feel better soon. :)

I found that marijuana made my migraines worse. The best thing I found was a darkened, silent room and a cold cloth - virtually impossible when my kids were young. Most meds didn't work or had side effects - ergotomine tartrate got rid of the headache but made me nauseous. Wigraine got rid of most of the symptoms, but was so full of caffeine that I couldn't sleep.

When I reached menopause, they went away.

Alcohol works wonders on headaches.

You still might actually have a headache, but you won't feel and won't care.

Just make sure to drink water before bead so you won't have a hangover.

Pregnancy prevented migraines for me.

Unfortunately, the resultant kids caused them.

It's what they call "not a long-term solution".

Obviously you should just be pregnant all the time. Then no more headaches!

That's the stuff they injected me with so i could have my kidney stone taken care of. The stuff is quite powerful. My tongue literally flopped to the side of my face in mid sentence.

It's also what they used on Shrubya when they scraped his colon for evangelist/neocon mementos.

No problem. I hadn't heard of it either until one of those nights with a room full of strangers in strange getups and masks handled my genitals whilst i was under the influence of a strange drug.

I doubt I've had one, then. I've had my share of bad headaches, but not migraines. My mom and brother have had migraines, though.

I've had a migraine for 18 days straight without relief (yes, the same headache I made a thread about a while back- the neurologist I saw said it's a status migrainous or something like that...) The walk-in clinic people and emergency room people gave me lots of different drugs that either didn't help at all, only helped a little bit, or didn't help at all and had unpleasant side effects. The neurologist I saw gave me an antidepressant that is supposed to help but it can take a few weeks to fully take effect. It seems to be helping a little bit but my headache is still here.

I've only ever had one migraine, and my god, it was like have having my head stuck in a vice and defecated on my constipated elephants. Not good in other words.

I'll reiterate the poster who said that nutrition will help - a balanced diet with all the right amount of nutrients (can't help remembering what Morgan Spurlock looked like after a month of Supersize Maccy Ds...), plenty of water, and regular, low-key exercise. Even a brisk 20-minute walk every day can work wonders.

And obviously, the orgasm sounds like a good idea. Regular orgasms FTW!

acupuncture helps. There's some good pressure points on your hands which help alleviate the pains. I also find anti-inflammatories help. And a dark dark room.
Nothing much else. Thankfully I haven't had a bad one for a few years. One I had was so intense, the right side of my face became paralysed through pain. It was not pleasant.

I hope you never have one of those again. Could it have been a cluster headache, perchance?

no idea what it was. I'd just ridden home from varsity, had stored my bike away and was taking a moment to enjoy the clean crisp night winter's air and the stars when it just hit me. I literally fell over and lay on the ground for several minutes unable to move. I finally crawled (again, literally crawled) up to my front door and lay there feebly tapping against it until my then g/f came out to see what the odd noise was. She helped me to bed and plied with painkillers which did absolutely f-all. I think I took 6 digesics which are damn strong painkillers - the package recomends just two a day. Even then, all it did was dull the pain enough for me to sit up and drink some water. Thankfully I did manage to sleep. Next day it was gone, but I felt like I had cotten wool stuffed into my skull for the next 3 days.
It was bloody awful. worst one I've ever had.
Unfortunately, it is hereditary - my Mum gets them bad, and I still get them from time to time (thankfully they've diminished in intensity over the past few years).

I totally sympathise with anyone who gets migraines. Only until you've actually had one, do you realise just how terrible they are.

Back in the days before Imitrex (which is peculiarly effective), someone in the local area where I live who had chronic migraines ate an Egg McMagnum. The migraines went away for good.

Caffeine can help by opening up the blood vessels, or so I have been told.

Topamax is the only medication that has helped my fiance's migraines. Non steroidal anti-inflamatories (I.E. Brufen, Nurofen etc) helped a little.

Coffee is known to help some people. Try a shot of coffee. Otherwise, maybe take some asprin.

If you come across anything that works, please let me know.

It can. In some cases it can cause migraines.

If the OP gets them all the time, there are things to check out. I found out I needed glasses and I got ones that deal with monitor glare. Mix that with frequent trips to the back cracker and my migraine count went way down.

When you sense one coming on; take some headache pills. Sometimes, it can help(well for me it does).

Finally, take a look at the dummies for migraines book. It answered some questions I had.

Check the Net as well.

Good luck.

And caffeine is actually one of my triggers, meaning most medication I can't have either because sadistic drug companies put caffeine in it. I fail.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I will keep these in mind!

In addition to caffeine, low light levels, water and sleep. And yes, with a migraine, caffeine and sleep are not mutually exclusive for me.
