is the sweat on your balls while you're fucking your sister...

Ah, all the jokes one could tell about incest and West Virginia...

But what's up with Germany?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/feb/27/germany.kateconnolly

Is there an actual chance that the court could rule that incest is ok?

Do you think that incest is bad? Why?

Napoleon abolished France's incest laws in 1810. Neither is it a crime in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal or Turkey. Japan, Argentina and Brazil have also legalised it in recent years.

Incest is forbidden in Britain, where the law was extended in 2002 to include not just those with blood ties, but also step-parents and their children and in cases of adoptions.

Apparently, more than a few countries think that the West Virginia lifestyle is good stuff...

Want to know how to spot a virgin in West Virginia? She can run faster than her brothers...

Ah, it seems that it is now boiling down to choice. Choice is good. Better to fail and learn or realise through choice what you think and feel than to give in simply because it is forbidden.

"'When siblings have a child together, there is only a 50% chance that it will be healthy when it is born,' said Jürgen Kunze, professor of human genetics at Berlin's Charite hospital."

that is not even remotely true, unless for non-sibling reproduction in germany the rate is at 50.1%

Must everything revolve around pumping out units?

Incest laws also exist because it's almost impossible to rule out coercion, duress and abuse of authority. Two siblings, or parents and their children have relationships so entangled that how does one separate consent from exploitation?

Now obviously, the couple in this story, considering their histories, are a rare exception and I find it frustrating when laws are so rigid that there's no room for such. Every rule has an exception.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that the laws against incest aren't there for good reason.

The risks associated with a child of two siblings are roughly equivalent to the risks associated with any mother giving birth at age 47 (older mothers are more likely to produce genetically anomolous children)

If some of you think it's so wrong, why do so many countries now have no law against it?

I mean, you can still get a kid who is stupid, even without the mother and father being brother and sister...

Yes, but we're talking about an exponential increase in the chances that your child would be born with genetic/mental illnesses through incest.

Also, societal dispositions on incest would also multiply the risk of teenage suicide should the child be healthy enough to even contemplate the thought. Incest is just unhealthy for the child. Period.

well, yeah. but like all exponential increases, at the beginning there ain't much increase at all. meaningful inbreeding depression occurs over generations of repeated close-kin reproduction. it isn't a one-off sort of thing.

There's already been a thread on this.

About a year ago, when that story was written.
