Women inmates in a Siberian prison take part in an annual beauty contest which offers inmates a chance to demonstrate good behaviour and win early parole.

So, is this a good idea? Should the prisons where we live begin a similar scheme, giving women the chance of early parole in return for participation in a beauty competition?

This is so inane it makes my brain hurt...
What's next? A weight-lifting competition for men to win early parole? Or better yet, some American Gladiators type competition?

Welcome to the new female prison parole system, where all women who are judged beautiful enough can look forwards to early parole
Lunatic Goofballs: "hey cool, now i can vote for the one i want to get busy with when she gets parolled"

For the men? How about a big dirt arena with no escape and no food, just whiskey and PCP. The last one alive wins the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.
That, or, in the case of murderers or rapists, scientific experiments. Pay your debt to society by taking one for the team. If you survive, you're out, however, side effects may include bleeding constantly from both eyes.

I suppose if it works for them they can do it.
Maybe they should do one for men so they don't feel left out?
Or an art contest or something.

Absolutely freakin' not. The subjective opinion of 'beauty' deciding early parole!? That's all but utter lunacy!
For men?
THUNDERDOME!
I heard thunderdome with a big, echo Zeus-like voice!

Or better yet, some American Gladiators type competition?
Bah, that isnt worth watching.
Going old school with Roman gladiatorial combat would be fantastic though - totally voluntary to fight in the arena, pay per view real combat could help fund the prison system. No early release (maybe even restrict it to just lifers or death row), but dangle the carrot of great living conditions and visits from the winners of the prison beauty pagents. There are enough prison killings going on anyway, why not put it on TV and make some money off of it?
Oh... and 'reality TV' invades the prison system. Forget that Oz crap, put cameras up everywhere and show real prison life (interviews with inmates, watching daily life, etc). That gives you a revenue stream, serves as a potential deterrent to criminals who see how bad prison life actually is, and gives the general populace a realistic view of prison conditions and the people sent into it.
Cooperate and get a reduced sentence or better living conditions - totally voluntary, improves the life of an inmate, improves the budget of the prison, provides educational entertainment to the public, its win win win.

Because treating convicted criminals like animals in a documentary is what makes it easier to rehabilitate them.
Why should the ones who cooperate gain a reduced sentence? I seriously doubt it would be educational, and it would likely mean crime would be adversly affected because of it.
It's not far off saying, "hey why don't we put cameras all over your house? you'l get paid and other people will get entertainment out of watching you."
"what do you mean, civil rights? What do you mean it would reduce chances of getting a job? A violation of privacy? naa it helps the economy therefore it must be good."

Y'know if you read the article, it seems pretty clear that beauty isn't the deciding factor for getting early parole. It's good behavior demonstrated by the involvement.
It gives one example of a woman who earned early release who's "involvement (in the pageant) helped". That's not the same as 'caused'.
Amazing how things can be taken out of context...
