Stopped reading here:

Men near the end of their corporate lives, he said, are especially edgy. "To be divorced is the equivalent of being declared dead -- because we can't take care of ourselves," Amano said.

Nice to know that some men are more than willing to admit they've the self-sufficiency of a 10 year old...

That's because they were mothered to death. They had their mother to do everything. I know several guys like that... including my husband. We joke about it though.

Right, because all men have the self-sufficiency of 10-year-olds and are completely helpless without women. That's just great.

Then you missed the point of it all, which was nicely summed up in the nest two sentences:
When his wife told him eight years ago that she was "99 percent" certain she was going to dump him, Amano said, the only things he then knew how to do in the kitchen were to fry eggs and pour boiled water over noodles.

Since then, in addition to learning how to listen and talk to a wife he had ignored for two decades, Amano said, he has learned how to take out the trash, clean the house and cook.

These guys know they're in trouble and are trying to do something about it.

Indeed. And, the same goes for some women as well.

Gone to the days when Americans got pensions...

Oh well. Maybe this will make the Japaneses men at least pretend they care about their wives. It's sad money matters more, but greed trumps love every time.

At what age, again? :p It's still pretty silly that some full-grown adults can't feed or take care of themselves. Maybe those Carl's Jr. ads are right. :p

I love these guys. :D My wife keeps threatening to translate and send articles about them to my father-in-law who is probably the most stereotypical Japanese husband imaginable, for all that he is a pretty good guy.

She says avoiding the crap of most Japanese marriages was why she really was interested in finding an international relationship.

Mid-30's on up. Seriously, it is not considered manly for men to know how to cook, clean, or carry things in Japan. My mother-in-law was shocked when the first time I met them I insisted in helping clean up after dinner because "Men don't do that!" She also grumbles when my wife tells her that I not only cook, I make sure to cook every weekend to give her a break and do things like bake bread just because she (my wife) likes it. My father-in-law can't even operate the microwave and he's a doctor and surgeon!

Indeed so, although there are exceptions.

TPC, remember this is a country where gender roles are changing, but are still pretty feudal and confucian.

I LOVE to cook. I couldn't imagine not cooking. In fact, every so often, I pick a new food or spice and I make a point to experiment with it for a while. I just got off a major muffin kick( lemon chocolate chip and pineapple corn muffins are awesome).

I've been eyeing saffron for a while, but it's soooo expensive. I might play around with coriander instead. *nod*
