A married couple in Australia came home from their vacation and found police and reporters were preparing to hold a news conference about their suspicious disappearance.
An Australian couple who went on a last-minute vacation arrived home on the weekend as police and reporters were preparing to hold a news conference about their suspicious disappearance.
William and Heather Ostell found police searching their Melbourne home when they pulled into the driveway on Sunday. Australia's Herald Sun newspaper reported police were in the process of ripping up a backyard deck to search for the couple's bodies.
The Ostells' daughter, Angela, had called police Sunday after failing to hear from her parents since last Thursday. She had found their house unlocked, their car missing and the dog home alone.
Heather Ostell, 58, said the couple took a "spur of the moment" trip and couldn't reach their daughter before they left the southeast Australian city.
"We had decided on Friday morning (to have a break) and we just let a couple of people know," she said. They arranged for neighbours to take care of their dog and left the door unlocked by accident.
"I'll blame my husband for that. We're pretty security conscious," she said. "We just wanted to get out on the road and to get out of here."
She said they brought their cell phone but forgot the charger and didn't listen to the radio during their trip.
The Herald Sun reported Angela Ostell was furious when she saw her parents drive up, screaming, "Where have you been?" before storming from the scene.
Heather Ostell said she would have to "make peace" with her daughter.
