New Sins .... ?

Nanatsu no Tsuki

He adds a whole list of new sins, a couple that make sense and many that don't, but he won't reconsider any old sins so divorce is still a sin and birth control is still a sin (which is ironic, since harming the environment is a sin now and overpopulation is the single biggest cause of environmental harm there is - how will he reconcile that, I wonder - or will he just ignore it and hope the inconsistency goes away) .

Oh, and in spite of the shrinking priesthood and the disaffection of Catholics worldwide he still won't allow women as priests and he won't allow priests to marry.

So, is this the Modern Church for the Modern World?

The pope released this list to help keep faithful Catholics aware of new developments that, potentially, are against Catholic Social teaching.

Also, the Church doesn't (nor will it) ordain women because, in the Bible, men were the apostles whom Christ himself chose to start the Church.

I feel sorry for the Catholic Church (now I never thought I'd ever write that!) in a way; as their holy scripture means that they can never update, and so ultimatly they will die out. Long live the Pope!

Christ chose many women through whom to teach and lead. To not ordain women is to deny the equality before Christ that is demanded of us.

Fact is, the Catholic Church doesn't ordain women because of misogynistic beliefs that it has never been able to move beyond.

I thought it was a really bad to change things like this, and that all Sin is forgivable expect blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

That's always been the only unforgivable sin. And it's a very misunderstood sin. It's the act of willfully refusing to accept God's grace and is fully reversible at any time.

I do like the environmental stuff. It's refeshing when you have some sects here in the US that feel it's okay to use and exploit the planet because that's what God wants.

Most Catholics already silently ignore the birthcontrol rule. I think the nubers are at 80% in the US IIRC.

They can update, throughout history the Pope has said a lot of stuff that Jesus did not say, it's his job.

So "Don't pollute the environment, manipulate genes or have social and economical injustices.", these new commandments sound very left wing.

The most interesting part of the article is that only 20% feel uncomfortable telling a priest about their sins. I imagined almost everyone would find that awkward and creepy. Maybe they instead find it liberating to tell someone those things you otherwise just don't tell anyone.

With a good priest it's actually kind of nice. Espeically when you think you're the most rotten person on the planet when you do something extraordinarily bad. It's one of the many places I differ with the Catholic church, I think true remorse is all that's needed I don't think you need a priest to officially forgive you, but I do like that you can go to a priest for those really bad things that you need some sort of closure on.

He said that priests must take account of “new sins which have appeared on the horizon of humanity as a corollary of the unstoppable process of globalisation”. Whereas sin in the past was thought of as being an invididual matter, it now had “social resonance”.

“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbour’s wife, but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos,” he said.

Bishop Girotti said that mortal sins also included taking or dealing in drugs, and social injustice which caused poverty or “the excessive accumulation of wealth by a few”.

He said that two mortal sins which continued to preoccupy the Vatican were abortion, which offended “the dignity and rights of women”, and paedophilia, which had even infected the clergy itself and so had exposed the “human and institutional fragility of the Church”.

These aren't really new sins; it's not as if every time you do or think something you just have the check the list and you'll be okay. He's just applying old rules to new scenarios.

It's a little like when the Supreme Court hears an appeal. They don't write new amendments, they just interpret existing ones in a modern way. The only difference is the Church's eerie love of ceremony and doctrinification.

Lust
Gluttony (which can be committed one of 6 ways)
Greed
Sloth
Wrath
Envy
Pride

So, it looks like Greed carries over, and so does sloth, though sloth seems to have taken on a more worldly meaning ie: pollution.

Would "excessive wealth" be considered the modern form of "greed"?

Of course the Vatican would get rid of Lust... how else could it get away with fucking little boys? And wrath... being excessively angry when caught in the act, and envy when someone else got away with it... ;)

So, is this the Modern Church for the Modern World?

Actually overpopulation has less effect on the environment than the west does. A family of ten in Africa pollutes far less than a family of three in the US.

To address your 2nd point, there is no reason to ordain women. If the Church had felt it is in teaching with Christ and the Church, it would have been done(please remember the Church tries to stay along the lines of the Apostles)

I think this move on a whole shows the Church is modern and also the benefits to having order that follows the early Church instead of some wacko w/ a bible just saying whatever comes to mind(ie Hagee, Roberson and Falwell, the religious wrong)

Well, I'm going to hell now. I drive a PT Cruiser (quite possibly the most inefficient car of its size on the planet, I don't get 20 mpg highway), and I believe carefully applied genetic engineering can prove beneficial to humanity.

It's okay. Hell will be a great party. :p

Personally, I think the Catholic Church has done the right thing in regards to its two new sins... but I love listening to Slayer, so I'll be there in Hell right next to you. ;)

Slayer I said fuckin' Slayer!

I was playing 'The Christ illusion' to my oldest the other day, he said 'Dad I didn't realise how heavy Slayer were'

I told him, 'It's fine to listen to ya Bad Religon son, but sometimes only Slayer will do.

Ahhhh children, that Larkin fella was right y'know!

Also, I don't see the one you're claiming exists...

(this list was posted earlier in the thread)

1. “Bioethical” violations such as birth control
2. “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty

Now, I would like to ask you the same thing you said to me, did you actually read it? I know I did. Too bad we can't say the same thing about you. I did my research before embarking on a lovely round of sarcasm.

Well I posted my news source, which did mention it perhaps you should read it and just in case you don't get it here is another one I found and this is the list

1) Polluting
2) Genetic engineering
3) Excessive Wealth
4) Drug Abuse
5) Abortion (or other birth control methods)
6) Social Injustice
7) Pedophilia

And here is the source: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=248153&cl=6916547&ch=248154&src=y7news

So Yes I did look and read, and yes I did see that you mocked them with intent to insult and as I said perhaps you should have a look before making such insults (claims)

Oh and I read that BBC link you chucked in and yes it does mention pedophilia, it seems that your little Ctrl+F function didn't work so please before you go and cite a source and claim that something isn't in it when clearly it is you should read it carefully.

I got the list from this thread and from the news sources I used.

Thus I see a complete and utter contradiction between the various sources. Hence, I stand by my sources. Until there is unity between sources, I see no reason to believe you.

And once again, I cite my sources, and from the BBC site, I give you the list from there:

Environmental pollution
Genetic manipulation
Accumulating excessive wealth
Inflicting poverty
Drug trafficking and consumption
Morally debatable experiments
Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

And the last one is interesting...

To me, it says the entire Vatican will go to hell as it still refuses to ordain women, hence is in violation of the fundamental rights of human nature, as all humans are equal.

According to Futurama, that would be the 20th century.

Yes. It is indeed the 20th century. :)

Ouch... cutting. But pretty accurate.

Given the fact that the refusal to ordain women doesn't make much sense without thinking that, I'd say the burden is on you to disprove it.

Perhaps.
Say, since Thou shall not pollute is one of the new sins, then, if I burp, does that make me a sinner?

Yes

Do as we say, not as we do? Is perhaps the reason why?

I think faith and the Church are two very different things. Spirituality can get you answers, the Church can either use you or abuse you.

I particularly like this part:
"and social injustice which caused poverty or “the excessive accumulation of wealth by a few”."

Apparently the Catholic Church as an organization has been committing a mortal sin for the past two millenia or so.
I noticed that too. Seems that Benedict just sentenced himself to Hell.
Lust
Gluttony (which can be committed one of 6 ways)
Greed
Sloth
Wrath
Envy
Pride

The Church doesn't accumulate wealth for individuals. It most resembles a NPO, where donations are given and then used for maintainence, charities, etc.
There is, of course, the Vatican City. But how can you expect the Pope to truly communicate with God unless he is surrounded by a plethora of worldly wealth.

The Church originally had only five Deadly Sins, but...well, you can see why they went with seven.
