A reason (as if it were needed! :D) to drink alcohol

It has been known for years that drinking moderate amounts of wine reduces the chance of heart failure.
The keywords of course being moderate and wine.

And this booze is now mine. MINE !

Apparently, people drink small to moderate amounts of alcohol live longer (http://www.reuters.com/article/email/idUSN0735707020080307) than teetotalers.

Thoughts?

Yeah, and I stopped getting plastered because I was concerned about my weight. (I'm about average size, but would rather be ripped for spring break. :) )

Well, anyway, this is for middle-aged people, and most of us are in our teens or 20's. I'm not saying we shouldn't drink, and God forbid I support the minimum drinking age at 21, but let's not go nuts. Maybe when I'm 60 and less concerned about my appearance... then again, by the time I'm 60, we should have all kinds of advanced therapy so we don't have to drink booze for health reasons.

Many studies have shown that light to moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers, but every time, the researchers have cautioned that there is no reason for the abstinent to start drinking.

What I don't get is why if previous studies indicating that moderate drinkers live longer does not indicate that people should drink, then why does this one change anything?

And why in the world should multiple studies that indicate improved health for moderate drinkers mean that you should not become one?

Ahhh, the "advances in medical technology and capability will fix me when I'm older" plan. I've been hanging on to that one for the last couple of decades, too. I'm still fairly hopeful :D

It doesn't change anything, no, it just adds to the body of evidence. I suspect that the reason that the article doesn't want to encourage the abstinent to start drinking is that they'd get slated if they did.

Now there may be, said King.

"This study certainly shifts the balance a little bit," King said in a telephone interview.

Everything in the world will either give you cancer but cure you of heart disease, or vice versa. It's probably best not to pay too much attention to these surveys, therefore.

Is that due to a lack of interest in drinking or because you're 15 and have to rely on others to get it?

I just don't like the taste.

I'm less than 5 paces from More Alcohol than the pub has yet I don't touch it, even though I could.

Alcohol is the opiate of the masses.

Or as B. Franklin so astutely observed:

My Companion at the Press, drank every day a Pint before Breakfast, a Pint at Breakfast with his Bread and Cheese, a Pint between Breakfast and Dinner; a Pint at Dinner; a Pint in the Afternoon about Six O’Clock, and another when he had done his Day’s-work. I thought it a detestable Custom. But is was necessary, he suppos’d, to drink strong Beer that he might be strong to labor. I endeavor’d to convince him that the Bodily Strength afforded by Beer could only be in proportion to the Grain or Flour of the Barley dissolved in the Water of which it was made; that there was more Flour in a Penny-worth of Bread, and therefore if he would eat that with a Pint of Water, it would give him more Strength than a Quart of Beer. He drank on however, & had 4 or 5 Shillings to pay out of his Wages every Saturday Night for that muddling Liquor; an Expense I was free from. And thus these poor Devils keep themselves always under.

As a moderate drinker (and avid fan of specialty beers), I feel justified in my insistence that delicious, delicious beer is way healthier than soda pop.

I wouldn't doubt it, as your body metabolises a can of soda pop like it's a huge spoonful of sugar. And don't forget the ones that use caramel coloring...

Though I really don't drink soda pop anyway. I might have one or two cans a week, if even. I'm much bigger on milk, fruit juice, and green tea. I'd drink beer, but I'll have to wait until next year to legally buy some, and when that time comes around, it'll be a six pack of Guinness Draught.

Alcohol is a waste product produced by yeast.
Yeast is a microorganism.
Microorganisms are colloquially referred to as "bugs."

Therefore beer is bug shit. ;)

Or at least, every beer I've ever had, no matter its country of origin, tasted like bug shit, to me.

Nope, give me southern-brewed, so-sweet-it-puts-you-in-a-diabetic-coma tea.

I hate non-drinkers who get all uppity about it.

It's called an acquired taste. Not every carbonated drink has to be sickeningly sweet.

Do you eat cheese, by the way?

alcohol is a drug that is legal to take when you reach a certain age, but some other drugs aren't, purely because the evil corporations who make loads of money from selling alcohol to people would mean economic troubles for said government. So enjoy your continuing of destruction!:)
