Groucho Marx or Charlie Chaplin?

The question is pretty simple, who was funnier, Groucho Marx or Charlie Chaplin?

I'd give it to old Groucho, in the end (yes, I know...) His 'tache always seemed thicker.

Too different. Chaplin's physical comedy was incredibly graceful and creative, on par with Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd. Groucho was a personality, more than a physical character. They were both great at different kinds of humor.

I just don't get Groucho Marx at all. He has some really good lines, but he seems to have no skill at delivering them at all. Or else it's just that his style doesn't age well, whereas the physical humour of the silent comedians is more timeless.

He had great lines, absurd lines, and on the edge of good taste. The old stuff might be a bit tame today I guess, but still genius as a matter of throwing your mind off balance and making humor from incongruity.

Groucho of course. He has aged VERY well and his style still causes me to laugh. He was a movie version of Mark Twain in terms of wit.

ahhh that explains it. i couldnt put my finger on why i didnt care for groucho

its so hard to figure if you dont like a comedian because you dont find him funny or because he's a jew.

Well, exactly. Here's my tip - take a comedian and ask yourself "do you want to to tie him up and make him watch you burn his local synagogue to the ground?". If the answer that question is "yes" then you may or may not be an anti semite but the comedian in question is definitely very funny. If the answer is "no" then you are definitely an anti semite but are too frightened to admit it and the comedian may or may not be funny.

one question for clarification...

does it matter if the comedian is actually jewish?

No.

The only time it matters is if he's an islamic fundamentalist (those lot really pack out comedy clubs!) because then burning down the synagogue is being kind to said funny islamofascist. If this is the case, you must appeal to an independent panel of four boxers who will adjudicate on your alleged anti-semitism. In the case of a 2-2 tie, Lennox Lewis' vote counts double.

whoa its a mercy that there are so few islamic fundamentalist comedians in the US. otherwise i would almost certainly screw up my anti semitism.

and we wouldnt want that now would we?

I'm a fan of Physical comedy to be sure, but I'm giving this to Groucho.

"From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it."

"Although it is generally known, I think it's about time to announce that I was born at a very early age."

"I did a bond tour during the Second World War... We were raising money, and we played Boston and Philadelphia and most of the big cities. And we got to Minneapolis. There wasn't any big theater to play there, so we did our show in a railroad station. Then I told the audience, that I knew a girl in Minneapolis. She was also known in St.Paul, she used to come over to visit me. She was known as "The Tail Of Two Cities." I didn't sell any more bonds, but eh... they didn't allow me to appear anymore."

"I find television very educational. Every time someone switches it on I go into another room and read a good book."

Groucho by a long, long way - one of the greatest wits of all time. I always find Chaplin maudlin and sentimental rather than funny - when it comes to silent comedians give me Buster Keaton any day.

Douglas Adams:

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

Both fun like hell, although GM's nonsenses are sometimes too far-off for my taste. Hence Charles Chaplin, expecially because he was able to make a fun movie about Hitler.

It's not a great comparison really, putting Keaton and Chaplin on the poll probably would have been better. And I'd have gone for Keaton.

Did any Brits here see Paul Merton's series Silent Clowns? A great series of documentaries about silent comedians. Half an hour on the comedian of the week, and then a half an hour short film of theirs restored to proper quality. The Keaton film had me rolling with laughter!
