Moar proof that DST is a bunch of hocus

You actually lose $3 in the deal on average. Daylight Savings Time is a scam ad a farce. You don't really save any daylight. It should be repealed. Either keep the current timezone or move to all-year DST...which would mean the next time zone in reality. It's time to stop screwing with people and electric bills. (8000th post)

It's official: Daylight Saving Time is a bust. Designed (and recently extended) as a measure to save energy in a period of inflated electricity prices, an in-depth University of California study has now shown that DST doesn't save anyone any money at all. In fact, it's costing consumers extra, to the tune of $3.19 in extra utility bills per year.

The study was made possible because of the peculiarities of the state of Indiana, which was only partially on DST until 2006. When the whole state finally went DST (to sync with the national business day), some comparisons vs. the prior method were made apparent. The study calculated that the shift costs Indiana residents an extra $8.6 million in electricity bills in total.

Why? Shouldn't they be, well, saving daylight -- and burning fewer light bulbs?

They are, said the study. But while lighting bills were reduced, air-conditioning units had to run more often, because people were home on hot afternoons when they'd otherwise be still at the office. Heaters had to be run on cool mornings, too, when people got up and it was still dark outside.

Professor Matthew Kotchen, who pioneered the study, noted, "I've never had a paper with such a clear and unambiguous finding as this."

This isn't the first time the energy-saving rationale of Daylight Saving Time has been attacked. The first was in 1976, when the National Bureau of Standards found that there was no significant energy savings after the switch. The recent expansion of DST to a few extra weeks was also revealed to have saved no energy during its run. And yet here we are...

In related news, it was also revealed that Daylight Saving Time actually creates no additional daylight.

Who is getting the money from this scam?
You don't really save any daylight.
How does that work exactly?

I think it has something to do with the farmers... then again... who cares about them? If Congress gave a damn, we wouldn't bother with DST and keep hours to reflect true time.

Not that I care. Just saying is all...

That's got to disappoint and confound some of our critters in Congress.

What if we moved up _two_ time zones? Surely that would save a few more dollars.

Oh, come on. Stop being unfair.

Anyway, I'm glad they took the time to investigate this. It seems we'd better find a specific time and stick with it after all.

I prefer Daylight Saving Time, but I would rather we kept it all year.

Given the choice between going to work when it is still dark and working until after sunset, I would much rather face my darkness in the morning. Morning's already depressing - how much worse can it get?

Time is something you are the master of, it is not the master of you.
Time is something you move in, a measurement, it's up to people to manage their own time.
In effect DST can and can't still work.
Trouble is people expect other folks to work out what to do for them, i think more emphasis should be on the persons ability to change things and not the other way around.

Way to make these guys feel bad about all the government grants they got.

I wish I could get money for doing stupid stuff like that.

I think you've just paraphrased Pink Floyd...
"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way" Pink Floyd...

But don't worry, Time is on your side, or so say Earth, Wind, and Fire.

oh really? that was just an idea, man these subconscious messages get around don't they?

During the darkest couple weeks it's depressing to be able to see the stars both on the way to work and on the way home. It would be good to have DST then so the entire workday takes place in darkness and one can go out and do stuff during the brief period of light.

During the summer there is no need for DST though, there is plenty of daylight in the summer.

The optimal solution would be if everyone moves to the equator.

Absolutely not. I like the seasonal changes.

I grew up at 54° N - having the sun set at 10:00 pm in the summer was great for kids. You could play outside late into the evening.
