Musicians
I was wondering do you write your own songs/music? Do you perform often or at all? What inspires you to write what you write? What instrument do you play?
Personally I have only just started to write my own songs and by that I mean today. The song I'm currently working on is Venus Talks, Mars Attacks though I've only written two lines of the chorus, the rest I keep crossing out and changing. I haven't decided which chords I'll be using.
I play guitar and as I have no songs I have never performed though I am contemplating playing at the next open mic night my university will hold which is in about a month.
My own inspiration to start writing while I was on the train today when I just started having word pop into my mind and writing them down. Of all those jotted down the two above lines and the title survived.
So answer the questions, tell us about your upcoming projects, past projects, performances and so forth. Lets make beautiful music together. ;)

I was a jazz musician, so 90% of what I played I wrote on the spot as I played. What inspired me was the conversation I was having with the other musicians.

I used to be proficient with the Clarinet.
I'm currently proficient with the Piano and Trumpet
I'm learning the Banjo.
I want to learn Guitar.
How's that mix? ;)
I write contrived folk-rock, and play clarinet, sax, and harmonica.

I play the piano, but I'm not a composer. I perform often for myself, I have an innate aversion to other people seeing me play. They can listen, but they have to stay out of the music room when I do. Otherwise, I stay still in front of the piano. I have issue, I know. LOL!:D

That's great as well though again I don't really listen to folk rock.

I played jazz piano for five years. Now I improvise considerably when I play for church and have worked out my own arrangments of "Bashana Haba'a" (I apologize sincerely if I misspelled that) and "In the Garden."

I play flute, bass, sax and piano to a decent level. I have performed (on flute and bass) but I far prefer writing music to performing it. I write classical mainly, although for my main university project I did a portfolio of music for strings plus rock band (which was awesome btw :p). I've been in orchestras, choirs and bands, but nothing at the moment :(
Oh, and I can't write lyrics to save my life.

I write music, but I don't sing or write lyrics. I suppose I *could* add lyrics to a song if I thought it needed it, but my tastes are mainly for instrumental music. I write for the guitar, keyboard, and saxophone. Of those, I've only played the saxophone publicly, mainly when I was in school.
What inspires me is actually pretty variable - it can be nothing at all, or something important that I feel needs to be written down. Usually, I'll just sit around a mix things up until I like what I hear, but I've also been inspired by hearing others, especially with the saxophone and improvisation. The keyboard is universally useful, but the guitar and the saxophone put me in very different moods.

well i would have got into music but previous experience with quitting playing the Coronet kind of put me off. (it was my teachers fault, this isn't a dig or anything but it really was, hell it wasn't even the music teacher godamn it).
I'm a little busy to make my own music, i have interests in almost any type of music, and i'd love to make my own but well i guess i'll leave that on the backburner when i have spare time.
I know busy is a poor exuse but in my case this is real.

I'm still trying to figure tht out myself. I'm just letting the words go onto the page and then work out how it would be delivered. Here's the chorus so far:
This is a tale of cosmic balance
A story where morality lacks
Phenomenon on a global scale
Where Venus talks and Mars Attacks
That is just a first draft and more than likely will be changed or even scrapped altogether. Make of it what you will.

I'm using Mars and Venus more as metaphors playing on traditional roles based on sex. You know Mars = God of War while Venus is the Goddess of Love. That's all the lines so far. Nothing about aliens.

I draw inspiration from just about everything. It's a shame that I'm not quite good enough at playing the guitar to transpose those musical thoughts into actual music, but I'm getting there. Most of what I play is hardcore practice, and the rest is train of thought randomness.
Though I might attempt to compose something, record it, and link it here later.

I write music, it's a major part of my degree. Reasonably-modern classical but remaining tonal generally. Recently had a piece performed by an ensemble of professional and student players, conducted by James MacMillan (perhaps some of you will have heard of him), quite pleased with it, hoping to have it performed again soon. I also write for choirs a lot, 2 weeks ago had something performed at evensong by my chapel choir, and I'll be writing more for them in the holidays.

The kind of mood I get from the words is a feeling of confusion and loss and I believe that would be best to go with. We could do this but I currently don't have a microphone.

You know, this concept's gotten me going... I've figured out a rather memorable lead segment for the opening and in between verses. But do be aware that it's in a Progressive format, and there are changes in time signature. I'll upload a sample once I've worked out the kinks.

I play piano, sort of, and am considering taking up a stringed instrument again (tried cello and violin at earlier stages in my life, but never got really interested).
I write music as well, almost invariably classical instrumental -- that is to say, severely classical (I'm mildly obsessed with fugues and passacaglias); I have delusions of someday forming my own band and writing songs that might actually reach the light of day, (forming a band because I can't write lyrics, so I'll have to collaborate with someone.) although that's rather unlikely because I rarely finish anything I start.
And I'm also a music theory geek, if that counts.

Check it out. I'm sure it could use some work, but I think it's a good starting place. Maybe that end bit could go, as I don't feel too confident about its context.
Whatever the case, what you should know is that it's a verse part that plays after the main string of lyrics in the first verse.

That's an interesting take - a little upbeat maybe given the lyrics and his discription of 'loss,' but pretty cool. I like that's it's just a tad dissonant - works with the idea of 'confusion,' like Londim was describing. :)
Edit: I've got something recorded now, but it's hardly audible over the grinding of my laptop's hard drive. It's a 6-year old machine, but I'm still kinda shocked at how loud my headphones (I'm using headphones as a mic) are picking up the internal noise. Anyone know how to get around this?

I suggest clicking 'pause' and giving it a couple minutes if anyone's interested - it's only 1.5mb, approx., but it takes forever to load. This is acoustic, and downtempo, and probably nothing like what Londim's asking for, but I thought it was better to take a shot at it to encourage more contributors *nudge* :)
Edit: eh. It's not playing for me - just the first 4 seconds. I think it's defective. Hooray for technology.

Perhaps one day I´ll be able to play for others, but it won´t happen soon. With me and the piano... What I´m going to post will be kind of bizarre, but there goes. When I´m playing, I have a very intimate moment with the piano, and we sort of, sustain a conversation. And the conversations are the best. That´s such an integral part of my playing, and cherish those moments so much that I´m not willing to share them with anyone else. Not at this moment in my life. Hopefully it´ll change.
I play guitar and struggle with keyboard and whatever else strikes my fancy that can be used to produce sound. I write primarily drone/dark ambient music but dabble in some more conventional stuff.
My inspirations are a wide range of stuff from Edgar Allen Poe to Nirvana.
I sing, I compose and I actually sell my work :) Been doing that for about 16 years now and recently discovered my inspiration - it is loneliness, rejection, some (typically artificial) personal drama. Now I'm not lonely, have no problems other than money, I don't get drunk each and every day/night so I'm at a bad case of writer's block :/
Actually I wanted to link some of my work here but I am yet to read the board rules and I don't know if it is allowed so I'll do that another time ;)

I sing, play guitar, keyboards, and a little clarinet. Gonna do the ocarina and startin' drums sometime in the not-too-distant future.
I write my own, but i really don't feel like singing them so much as using melodic lines on other instruments. Usually i just complicate instrumentals.

I write music and have performed it at various gigs, but not recently since I'm not in a band anymore. I play Guitar, Bass and keys mainly, but enjoy playing drums as well.
Normally what I tried to do in my music theory class was to come up with ideas which I liked (and what sounded good) and try to fit the chords and all that other stuff to it. I don't know if that would work as well for you, and I don't know if that's how the pros do it, but for my purposes it worked.

That was a good idea, though. I'm the same. Basically, the only reason why I'm learning piano is because I want to back myself up when I sing. I have a guitar, but I find it really hard to commit to learning it. I used to play flute (quite well, actually), and I've also learnt saxaphone in the past. Sax rocks, and i'm bugging my drummer to pick that up again. It's one of the sexiest instruments there is. My clarinet won't quite cover it .... There's a good chance all of us will switch instruments entirely for a few tunes :p
The flute is also a very good instrument, and i know a lot of my songs that can use them (if any of us played them)
The guitar won because of portability, really - after walking around singing so much, i thought, why not learn to play guitar at the same time? So i walked around playing guitar (at the speed of the song) singing and walking simultaneously. Made me locally famous, but not all in a good way :p

I am a choral music arranger of some skill, most notably (if "published" = "notability") jazz ensembles. I am next a lyricist (also published) and composer (one piece published). The choir is my favorite instrument but I am also a good ensemble singer and so-so vocal soloist with outstanding vocal improvisation skills. What I can't play (but wish I could) I learned to imitate...except piano...getting more than one pitch out of my mouth is doable only if it's the whistle-hum, and that's hard to control.

It's always good to have help. Having someone who pays attention and/or gets your vibe is great, since quite often it's difficult to find. Especially if you're fond of jazz ;)
I know. It's difficult enough finding people that understand your personality in general, let alone talented people who you can con into playing gigs with you. I've got a few contacts in the industry, one of them is a family friend. He's the one who recorded those covers for me, and I jammed with them at his birthday (40-year-old-ex-rockers :D), but that's pretty much the closest to someone I know (who I can stand being around) who's even talented & interested in the industry. I need to make more muso friends.
I was trying to get my mind off Reagan, the Cold War, and a bunch of other bullshit i probably wasn't aptly prepared for at the time.
Oh my god. You were alive for Reagan? ;)
A lot of jazz is played by people with classical skills that got bored with that cadence :p
That's why I really want to learn guitar.
Right. I had a flash of inspiration and just wrote all this down ( in a notebook not here :p). Of course this is a draft to the song that we could work around and will need tweaking but behold:
Venus Talks, Mars Attacks
We begin in the mind
Where cracked thoughts lie
Love you will not find
The mind of the people
Chorus:
This is a tale of cosmic balance
A story where morality lacks
Phenomena of a universal scale
Where Venus Talks and Mars Attacks
Mars glowers and rages
Venus soothes and calms
A time when battles start
A time like tonight
Chorus
A pyramid of souls reaches its peak
A place where others come to seek
Seek their loved ones and enemies
Find the truth and lies
Chorus
And now we sit around
While everything burns to the ground
Crying out for the antidote
To avoid the fate we wrote
Chorus x2

Right on. There's quite a few people here with similar interests - it wouldn't surprise me if a kick-ass meet-up (or at least exchange, by the looks of things) took place from the folks here. :)
I'm all for it. Good musicians, good food, good booze...good times.
I had one song published and played on a few local radio stations, but i ended up seriously not liking the song later for reasons that would take a little too long to explain here.
What's her name?
I can do it on occasion, but it really depends on how warmed up (or not) i am. BTW, Huun-Huur-Tu came through my town a little while ago, and it was funny listening to people trying to do it (they hold training seminars on occasion). I don't find much use for it, though, except on certain occasion ...
What's her name?
Oh my god. You were alive for Reagan? ;)
Honey, some of us were alive for Ford, and toddlers for Nixon. I appreciate that you understand enough about being told that ketchup = vegetable to be appropriately awed by those old enough to have done time under God-Elephant of Dune.
I write poems and stories and play music, but never the twain shall meet.
Which Twain? Mark's dead, and Shania's security is probably way too tight.

For my band that is my real band/main project we write our own material, but Im trying to convince my bandmates to do a cover of Sabbath's Children of the Grave for our LP.
For my side project, which is basically a band I do session work for, we are a cover band. And we play mostly shit. But its money.

What's her name?Honestly, it was never for that. Stan, the git-fiddler, had ripped off a Mad Season song, and i hadn't recognized it when i started riffing off a bunch of lyrics on it. We ante'd for recording time (which sucked of course) and upon listening to his editing on it, it occurred to me what had happened (since a few of the songs we started with were Alice In Chains and STP songs, as well as Badlands). I got kinda irritated about it, and then at his work he fell off a roof and fucked his playing hand up, so we called it off for a little while. Then he got busted for drugs and underage something-t'other and we kinda didn't do anything after that.
As far as the throat singing and such, i prefer singing harmonies in head voice and subdued falsetto, and if i concentrate too much on part of the voice, i sometimes negate use of other ones for a little while. I usually play/sing 3 hour gigs or so, sometimes 4.
And since wife usually is with me, not much use for the technique. So, in a way, kinda, "wifey" is her name. :p

Doesn't matter much, so long as "Shania" and "tight" are in the same sentence. :p

I know. It's difficult enough finding people that understand your personality in general, let alone talented people who you can con into playing gigs with you. It's gotta be for the right reasons. The members of our band are really, really good and very attentive, and our only real issue is the fact we've all got full jobs/lives independent of the music.
I've got a few contacts in the industry, one of them is a family friend. He's the one who recorded those covers for me, and I jammed with them at his birthday (40-year-old-ex-rockers :D), That's almost exactly how my wife started recording stuff. :)
but that's pretty much the closest to someone I know (who I can stand being around)Boy howdy. The music life is full of ab-so-lute whackos. :p
I always had a problem, until our group now, finding people who recognized that it was a group effort. I'm considerably more focused in music than i am here online, if that makes any sense :p
I need to make more muso friends.True. Never can have enough of 'em!
Oh my god. You were alive for Reagan? ;)If "alive" is what you want to call it, yes. :p
That's why I really want to learn guitar.Well, there's always the accordian! :p

I don't perform, but I have written dozens of songs, including such classics as "Sniper Fox" and "And I Laughed".

Lets make beautiful music together. ;)
I've played trombone since age 9 or 10, but I'm not that great on it. I perform with the University Wind Ensemble, and obviously performed with my high school symphonic band.
I also play bass, which I devote a lot more time to. I've always been in bands with that, so yeah, I write music. Usually what happens is the guitarist in my band will write a riff or a few, and I'll write bass lines to that riff (I hate playing the same thing as the guitar, seems pointless to me). Then together we'll either repeat the process and together arrange the riffs into a song structure, or we'll write more riffs together and then do that. Sometimes I'll write the bass line, rhythm and lead guitar lines, writing out the entire song on my own. I don't usually write lyrics, but I have done so a couple times. I never write music after the lyrics though, I always write the music first if I write lyrics at all, since it's more important.
Inspiration? I don't know, usually just what I feel or what I want to hear at whatever time. Dark emotions and thoughts most of the time. Sometimes other music, sometimes just opinions and whatever comes out when play.

I currently play a mid-sized accordian, a melodion, a ukulele and guitar. I'm contemplating recording some stuff, but my singing voice isn't very good.

Happiness and sunbeams and cute little puppy dogs
These are the things that I've seen with my heart
Life is a happy game if you don't forget to smile
But every now and then, your face it harbours a frown
Sadness is a barnacle, clinging to your bright boat
You won't let it sink your spirits if you'll only learn to float
We are all sea captains, sailing on life's rough seas
Come all you Magellans, come with me I've got pie
Happiness pie
Happy tailors, happy workers, happy farmers, happy girls
Happy widowers, happy freelance artists, happy welders, happy world
Happy drinkers, happy thinkers, happy musicians, happy beauticians
Happy mayors, happy pears, happy call girls, happy hula boys
Happiness pie
Pie pie pie pie

Yes indeedy, I write songs.
I have a current project that Im working on, wich is nearly complete.
I'll have a myspace page, among others. Its only a four song demo, but I think the songs that are on are all pretty good. Not great, mind you, but pretty good.
I play all guitars on the "album" and do all the singing.
Ive been told it has a very "classic rock" feel to it. Others say it sounds like "The Kings of Leon if thier music had balls."
Sadly, the name of the project "Hivemind" is already being used by a couple of others, apparently.
Oh well.
In a couple weeks maybe, I'll post a thread here, and let you all hear it.

I need dark/sad/angry music when I'm down. It makes me feel better.
Happy music just makes me furious when I'm in a shitty mood. Unless it's the Portal song.

I need dark/sad/angry music when I'm down. It makes me feel better. That reminds me - when Jonathan Davis of Korn was interviewed about the overt hypersensitive issues he'd sing about, he replied that he was pretty much a normal, happy guy. When put in the perspective of "Daddy" and "Mr. Rogers", it really puts an angle on the whole "suffer for your art" concept.
Happy music just makes me furious when I'm in a shitty mood. Unless it's the Portal song. What about Animaniacs?
