Not since Happy Gilmore has professional golf been linked to violence, but this one is a doozy.

I don't know if we can police a ban on golfers striking birds with golf balls.

Damn, he wasted a lot of time on that bird. Just put a .22 in the golf bag instead of a sand wedge, next time and shoot the damn thing.

Yeah, but you're a bit screwed if you get caught in a sand trap.

But he's a pro. If he can kill a hawk by hitting a golf ball at it, he's not nearly as likely as either of us to hit into a bunker. If he does, I'll be he could get out with an iron, if he had to.

Isenhour allegedly said, "I'll get him now," and aimed for the hawk.

"About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close," Baine wrote.

"As soon as this happened, I was mortified and extremely upset and continue to be upset," Isenhour said in a statement issued through his management company, SFX Golf. "I want to let everyone know there was neither any malice nor deliberate intent whatsoever to hit or harm the hawk. I was trying to simply scare it into flying away."

Right....

This is true. And I suppose he could always just try to shoot the ball into the hole.....

Sounds like an improvement to golf as a spectator sport.

Nothing could improve golf as a spectator sport unless they started to include hockey-style fights.

And boxing style bikini clad girls to hold the scoreboards.

If you insist. :)

Isenhour said he is an animal lover and his family has adopted three cats from a local shelter.

is that wise? :D

Why don't we just drop the golfers and replace everyone involved with bikini clad babes?

Beach golf?

It might be difficult to play golf on a beach but it does sound more appealing than normal golf.

if he hit six balls at the hawk and got "lucky" somewhere in there and nailed the bird-then yeah, he's an asshole.

I think its a crime anywhere in the US to come in contact with any raptor.

Sounds deliberate if he actually said "I'll get him" and then made repeated attempts, and finally succeeded.

I'm sure after the fact, he does feel terrible.

He needs a stiff fine that would directly benefit a raptor center.

We have one near me. Apparently, we have assholes here that shoot American Bald Eagles. Some are killed, many never fly again.

In order to curb violence against birds, we should ban golf immediately. After all, we must think of the hawks.

Exactly, if it wasn't for golf, that hawk would still be alive...

I know someone that raises birds for a living- he has tremendous areas caged in,including overhead.

He deliberately shoots hawks because they get his birds from time to time.

These are birds he raises and sells to "sportsmen" to release in fields and shoot with shotguns.

I'm no fan of cruelty to animals and think that golfer is a complete idiot, but one of the comments on the story made me laugh:

"Winner winner, chicken dinner."

reminds me of a baseball game where the pitcher accidentally killed an endangered bird. it was purely by accident, the bird flew up just as his fastball hit that spot. I believe he was fined for that.

this golfer deliberatly tried to 'scare the bird' away... he should be at least fined. whether or not more should be done should be up to the courts.

Randy Johnson was the pitcher that killed the bird.
