I know in the evolution thread a few people mentioned that you have to make your own meaning of life as it were. So I ask, what gives you meaning to your life? Is it family, friends, lovers, faith? Perhaps simply the hope that tommorrow will be better than today? So what is it?

I don't precisely know if my life has a meaning, being as it is not some poem to be interpreted. However, I think I am enjoying it, so it doesn't necessarily matter.

Does life need a meaning? I just try to enjoy it.

It is really awful to have to be looking forward to "next year" already this early in the calendar of this year. I had hopes that 2008 would be an improvement over 2007, but the events of January and February have already made 2008 the worst year of my life, and left me very little to grab onto as a reason to continue.

My children and their accomplishments give my life meaning. :)

I don't see how life has to have a meaning, but I guess my family and friends.

It changes daily... sometimes it's a good meal, a productive day, a good, energetic kendo practice, wind on a sunny day, fresh snow, a good time with friends, learning something new, finishing an excellent book, writing something deep and meaningful, that one song that gets you through the day... the list goes on and on.

I mean... even if I fail, it's either funny in itself(which would be success I guess), or makes for a good story. :p

Relationships, books and writing would be the Big Three of my life. I wouldn't say they give my life meaning exactly--they bring me joy, they make me glad to be here, etc. I don't think my life has any inherent meaning. I just think existence is preferable to the alternative of... absolutely nothing (and there have been plenty of times I thought the opposite).

My life gets meaning from music and the people I love. Which, a lot of the time, are really connected.

Oh, and enjoying a good beer on the beach is another one. Which I shall be doing some time Friday afternoon, until possibly Wednesday. It shall be glorious.

Love if anyone's ever seen it. If anything, there is much meaning to be gleaned from understanding the mentality of anyone worshipping anything like this.

I'm a Christian myself, so I guess a big part of it would be trying to emulate Christ and live a life reflecting His morals. Apart from that, I'd like to generally be a good person and a good neighbor and have some positive impact on the lives of people around me.

But on a less altruistic note, I also want to get myself into the History books so that I won't be forgotten by the world in my death.

I don't know the meaning of my life. I'm only fourteen though so I have a lot of time left to think about it (over two billion seconds!)

Today, my life is defined by the mother of all hangovers. In a less blurred, vague and more considered mood, I'd provide you all with a pretentious diatribe concerning Romantic beauty immanent and nature, ambition to excel and all that. Right now I just want a fry up really.

i've never understood this concept of life having meaning or needing to.
the meaning of life is life. what in principal it creates opportunity for, which as disembodied spirits we might not otherwise have.

cuddles are nice, and at time when i haven't had them i've wished i did and known wishing i did. and yet. the happiest times in my life have been those when i have been utterly and completely alone, and thus not destracted from savouring the fullness of every creative and exploratory experience.

If being human is an important part of what you are then yeah; being human will itself give you quite a lot of the meaning you search for. But like everything, our humanity is only part of what we are. We are each a particular kind of human (and I mean that on an individual level; nothing to do with race or class or anything) with traits and qualities of our own. And each of our traits adds a new level of meaning to what it means to be. Admittedly we don't give them all equal importance, but that's simply to compact our meaning into an easy-to-handle bundle of concepts.

It's not just how we see ourselves, either. We are also different things to different people; for instance, I'm that weird mystic socialist on NSG to you guys, and some degree of the meaning of my life comes from that as well. I am a brother, a son, a friend, a student, a peer, a mentor, a philosopher, a collegue, a chorister, a teammate, a cyclist, a protestor and any number of other social identities I satisfy in my interaction with other people, and in each context, there is some meaning to my existence independent of my physical form.

Sometimes it's hard to see why meaning is so difficult to acquire. It's because we live in an abundance of it, and don't really appreciate that we need to gain an awful lot of it in order to notice any difference.

Nope, I'm Spanish 100%. Well, I know that my dad's grandmother's family came from Germany, but the family's been in Spain for the past 150-200 years more or less, so I assume that makes me Spanish through and through.:p
